Russian MVD

I’m not sure why I decided to finish these up…? I guess they were part done… but nowhere near half done or anything and I have no immediate use for them… but I finished them up just the same.

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version):

These are Russian MVD troops from The Assault Group. Four of them I had previously painted, the rest were finished up this week.

I suppose I could have painted them in one of the green-ish/woodland camouflages that they seem to be more often pictured in (and then I could have passed them off as regular Russian troops – at least with the guys I game with!), but the bluey tiger-stripey looked… I don’t know… fun…? And that’s what hobbies are all about, right? Having fun?

I have seven guys with a carbine version of an AK.

Three guys with and AK assault rifle with an underslung grenade launcher (AK-74?). Strangely, I have guys with carbines and guys with Assault rifles with underslung grenade launchers… but no guys with just assault rifles.

Snipers (with a broken barrel – ARRRRRGG!)

Heavier Support – I think these are PKM machine-guns and some sort of RPG. (some more broken barrel syndrom appearing on one of those guys….

Coming soon on Tim’s Miniature Wargaming Blog:

I have an odd assortment of bits and bobs I’ve also finished this week that I’ll show off in a separate post.

  1. Good work Tim! The snipers look very mean...would not want them hunting me down.

  2. They look cool.

I'm actually thinking about a similar colour scheme for some near-future soldiers myself (eM-4's Plastic Troopers), but I'm pretty new to miniature painting, so I'm a bit unsure how to get camo looking good. Am I correct that it's a blue base with short grey and black bands over the top? Also it looks like you're using black lines to detail pouches, is that the case? Did you use any sort of wash or highlighting?

    Thanks,

    Some other Tim ;-)

    1. Thanks Tim!

Actually it was a medium sort of blue for the base and then little stripes of a lighter blue and then stripes of a darker blue. but light grey and black probably would work just as well.

I don't use any sort of washes. I undercoat everything in black and then paint sections not quite to the edge leaving a outline of black to highlight things. You can get a better sense of what I'm talking about by checking out a DPM Painting tutorial a while back:

    2. Thanks for telling me how you are doing these, and posting that tutorial, that's given me a couple of new ideas I hadn't heard of anywhere else.

    3. Cheers!

Speaking of doing near future/sci-fi guys in fun-coloured camo - I did a bunch of 20mm guys and scratch built AFVs a while back if very warm colours (Red-orange-yellow):
