Faustus Furius: 3000

It’s a long weekend here in Canada (Victoria Day) and we’ve been very busy with… well… lots of stuff. Amanda was away for almost two weeks and was busy on a couple other weekends before and after she was away and so this is the first time in a while that we were all around and didn’t have anything scheduled – so I was hoping we’d get in a bit of GAMING! Unfortunately it doesn’t look like we’re going to get QUITE as much gaming in over the weekend as I’d originally anticipated… and I’m not sure we’re going to get to play all (or even ANY) of the games I’d originally hoped to play (Pax Renaissance or  Neanderthal and/or Agricola and/or Nations). But when it looked like we were running out of afternoon and no one was interested in playing a heavier game – I did manage to convince them to play a quick game of Faustus Furious.

For those not aware Faustus Furious is a fun, fast-playing game of ancient chariot racing by Nic Wright (author of Song of Shadows and Dust - my favourite iteration of the SOBH game engine - and other games), which I have adapted for JET BIKE racing and dubbed Faustus Furius: 3000 (or FF3K). Finnegan and I played a game a few months back with motor bikes (we called it Faustus Furius MMLIII).

I backed the Ramshackle Games Jet Bike Construction Kit Kickstarter specifically to play with using this game. I’m planning on running a big demonstration game at ToonCon in the fall (15 weeks to go… 15 jet bikes to build… and some new terrain!). Ever since I finished off the First Jet Bike from the Kickstarter construction kits completed I’ve been itching to play a game!

End of Turn One – almost - they all shot forward. The Girl’s bike (in the middle) was the last to go, and she had a spare action so she attacked Amanda’s bike – and succeeded….

but the Out of Control result was a panicked burst of speed, which shot Amanda’s bike further ahead!

And again she shot forward in a panicked burst of speed!

Miraculously Amanda maneuvered and didn’t crash into The Girl’s bike!


(I have no idea if that’s an appropriate Jet Bike sound effect – there lots of Jet Bike sound effects used during the game – and some that sounded like screeching tires in the corners…!?)

He has a terrible bit of bad luck on the next turn and rolled THREE FAILURES! This angered the crowd and some hooligans spilled out into the street to hurl insults… and bricks… and generally get in the way!

Luckily the turn before he’d maneuvered into a position that allowed him to do his mandatory straight ahead move and NOT CRASH – which was tricky in this tight turn at the far end of the course!

ZzzzzzOOOM! She got quite a bit of a lead there for a bit.

Amanda got up close enough to attack The Girl’s bike sending her careening off to the left! Things looked dire at this point!

But The Girl rolled a pile of successes the next turn and managed to maneuver out of it!?

Just about the end of the first lap (I’d lost track of how many turns this was) and The Girl was in a pretty commanding lead!!

…before her bike crashed into a building just as she finished her first lap!?

This gave Amanda and Finnegan a bit of a chance to catch up!

Amanda got around the bend, but then rolled three failures and another crowd of Hooligans poured into the street!

She rolled not-so-many dice the next turn – but that lead to no successes/action and she crashed into a wall!

Amanda was not entirely enthusiastic about this turn of luck.

(There might have been a dollar added to the swear jar at this point)

The Girl had about four turns of only rolling one success (two are needed to get a crashed bike up and going again!) - but finally got her bike sorted out and back in the race!

Finnegan now had a pretty commanding lead – but he was having to round this corner – now with two fatigue dice and a group of angry hooligans blocking the way. Then Keira rolled Three Failures – at this point Finnegan had the option of having ANOTHER group of Hooligans surge onto the streets within 1 Medium range stick of The Girls bike OR move one group already on the streets! He chose the latter!

But he still didn’t get enough actions to take the corner… and crashed!

Finnegan’s rider was a bit quicker at getting his bike righted however, and got it up and shot off down the street before either of the others passed him!

On the next turn he just slid across and there was no way Amanda or The Girl could catch him – He didn’t even need to roll – his single mandatory forward move would have carried him across – but he rolled anyway and I think he actually rolled THREE SUCCESSES!

I think we played it out in about an hour – fast game – lots of fun – can’t wait to try it with MORE bikes! There was lots of excitement and a pretty huge upet – The Girl looked like she has an unstoppable lead… and then crashed because she couldn’t quite make a turn – Finnegan went from dead last to in the lead – then crashed himself – but got going again just before the others caught up to him and kept that lead for the rest of the final lap!!

It’ll be interesting to try it with different bikes. Not sure if I will allow different bikes in the ToonCon game – might just keep them all the same for simplicity’s sake.

Sneaky Sam: Halfling Assassin (and LOOT!)

Just a quick update – I happened to finish up this little guy along with my Lead Adventure Forum’s Lead Painter’s League entry for Round Eight, so I thought I’d share him – because I CAN!

Dwarven Gold Fever Kickstarter

My miniatures from the Lead Adventure Miniatures Dwarven Gold Fever Kickstarter arrived today!

I was a bit anxious when it first arrived as the package was a WRECK!!

Looked almost like it had been pretty beat up and completely soaked and dried up again - the few packing foam bits had almost completely dissolved!? Tape all coming off address label just barely held on!

I think it was a box originally, but it looked more like a lumpy, crumpled envelope!?

But when I checked over the contents - everything was there! Only two bent axes and one broken staff!

So I've been busy sticking them on bases - though I didn't have enough washers to do them all... Tempted to paint up a team of these for thsi week's Lead Painter's League!

Super Dungeon Explorers! (and Ready Player One)

Over the last two weeks I painted up a bunch of miniatures for The Girl’s Super Dungeon Explore game. She was planning to play it at her birthday party (which was this past Friday) and I thought I’d help her out with getting a few more miniatures painted for it. I also submitted them as my entires for the last two rounds of the Lead Adventure Forum’s Lead Painter’s League (so I can only show you half of them right now – the ones that were posted last week – the rest are currently posted for this week’s LPL.

Actually the game she was playing with her friends was Super Dungeon Explore: The Forgotten King - but most of these characters I painted this week are from the original set. The Girl allowed me to paint these ones as she already had copies of them that she’d painted (metal ones she’d picked up a few years back before she had either of the SDE games)

The game at her birthday party. They played the classic version where The Girl played all the baddies (there’s an “Arcade Version” which is totally co-op and the baddies are controlled by and AI). With both versions you’re supposed to have a one board – each with a spawning point  - for each Hero being played. I convinced her to, despite what it says in the rules, to use only three as it would take a REALLY LOOOOOONG TIME to play through FIVE boards and I figured the kids would have more fun if they were actually able to FINISH the game. They did finish – but one had to leave partway through and two other parents had so sit and wait for some time for them to finish…

In other news I finished Ready Player One this past week – for most of it I listened to the audiobook (Read by Wil Wheaton!) while painting all these SDE minis over the last couple weeks. A number of people recommended I read it – starting with William Bailie, who actually GAVE me a copy of the book. Others have since offered me copies or simply told me I should really get to reading the one I had.

I was quite reluctant to do so because the very title suggests it’s all about video games. I was never much of a video/computer game player. The last time I seriously played a computer game is was, I think Ultima IV – on my dad’s green screen Appolo (an “apple clone”). I did try to sit down and start the book and, as I suspected, the book is really is essentially about a computer game! I lost interest.

Then I heard Wil Wheaton had done the audiobook and I though, well that might be fun to listen to while painting – so I requested it from the library and waited… and waited… and waited… and eventually it showed up and I started listening to it over the last couple weeks.

Wheaton totally did it for me – he WAS Wade Watts. I would never have gotten through the book just reading it on my own. When Wade (the narrator) was explaining something that he was totally excited about you could hear it in Wheaton’s voice – the excitement was totally genuine – because, of course, it was probably something Mr. Wheaton himself is totally excited about.

Overall I thought the book was… Okay… by the end though I was getting into it enough that when I had to stop painting and take The Girl out to dance class, I took the paperback and finished off the last two chapters that way… 

I would definitely recommend the book to anyone really interested in 1980’s popular culture – TV, movies, music, RPGs and especially video games. I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with the 80’s they were, the saying goes, both the best of times and the WORST of times – and often that worst bit kind of overshadows the rest.

I did laugh out loud at a few of the things – the “time to make the donuts” comment when he was describing his daily routine and having to work at a tech support representative. Now, I don’t remember the commercial it’s from myself, but my partner Amanda, for as long as I’ve known her has said that in the morning whenever she was super tired and had to go off to work. And the names he gave a couple of accounts when he hacked… well, I won’t mention where (SPOILERS!)… Sam Lowrey and Harry Tuttle. Yeah. It was a 16 hour/372 page 80s nostalgia trip – which at sometimes felt like the author was trying to cram a mention of every movie, tv show, song/band, and game produced from the late 70s to the end of the 80s. A lot of it is explained – so if you aren’t familiar with the referred to material it won’t matter – but then there are the offhand, unexplained references (like the couple mentioned above) that only those who spent WAY TOO MUCH TIME watching tv and movies, playing games and listening to music in the 80s will appreciate (guilty as charged!).

The other batch of Super Dungeon Explore figures I did were some of the Forgotten Kings Billmen – anthropomorphic platypuses with halberds. I’ll be posting those in a week. 

I think I’m going to try and get back to some Irish for Montrose’s forces, or perhaps some Highlanders, for the next couple of rounds of the LPL.

After that I really will focus on finishing Ricks robot, then its onto some more JET BIKES!

Of course the Psi-Paladins and Lead Adventure Dwarves kickstarter rewards have shipped and should be here soon-ish... so that might provide some serious distractions... Reaper Bones III might also be shipping soon - but the kids are getting most of those...
