Napoleonic Prussian Landwehr

Here is the rest of the Napoleonic Prussian Landwehr from Warlord Games that I picked up in a recent order from Woodrow’s War Store while they were blowing out a lot of stuff… and probably still are… but I am going to resist going back and ordering any more… I’m painting these up for Song of Drums and Shakos.

In the end I decided to go with the green facings for Westphalia. Not because they would be particularly useful or because they fought at actions I want to recreate (I honestly don’t know that much about the era) – I mostly did these because I thought the colours looked nice…

This includes the two previous samples I painted.

The arms carrying the muskets were a separate piece that had to be attached. One of the arms was miscast or broken off at the fist – so there was arm, fist, the butt-stock, but no fore-stock sticking out the front end of the fist… If it was broken it was broken before it was put into the packaging as the missing bit was nowhere to be found… Luckily I had some other German firearms on hand…

Er… heh… heh… Wonder how long it will take anyone I’m playing with to notice…

I did get in a game of Song of Drums and Shakos with Finnegan yesterday – so now I have TWO game reports to get around to posting now! I have a few British Napoleonic Riflemen to paint up… after that…? Maybe some posts with pictures of some of the new terrain I’ve been working on..? maybe some work on a few things I promised other people I’d do for them (too long ago!?)

I need to have my head examined… I’m painting napoleonics and it’s not even to play a game with John and/or Curt (which has been my excuse in the past), but for a game neither will likely ever play!?

I definitely have enough to play a decent sized scenario. Perhaps I’ll recruit one (or both) of the kids to try out a scenario of Song of Drums and Shakos over the weekend…?

That’s it for Frenchies (for now…). I have a bunch more Prussian Landwehr and a few plastic Prussian Line Infantry (from Hät) to paint up. I also have a big box of assorted Napoleonic Minifigs I picked up at the Fallcon auction a few years back for $5 (I thought if nothing else I could melt them down…). There isn’t enough of them to make big units, but could give me a few more skirmish options. Here’s a few French Line, some Russians, a few british… some other stuff I can’t identify…

Here are a few of the aforementioned mystery figures

Okay these ones aren’t that much of a mystery – they’re British Foot Guards in Bearskins… They were in with the box of Napoleonics, but I’d always thought the bearskins more of a Crimean War thing… But then I noticed the code BN... British Napoleonic... So when and where would there have been foot guards wearing bearskins during the Napoleonic wars?

These are the guys that I really can’t identify. I’m not even sure if they’re Minifigs – most minifigs have a code on the top of their base – which helped me identify a few of the others. These do not. They may have a code on the bottom of the base but hey are all glues to this awful board with super hard glue. These have almost more of a Seven Year War look – mitre caps and what looks like full leg gaiters…? Any ideas?

Game reports… The end of the SoBH campaign and hoppefully a game of Song of Drums and Shakos.

More painting… I’ll probably finish up a handful of Prussians… Maybe I should pick up some cavalry to use in Sone of Drums and Shakos… perhaps a pack or two of Perry British and French cavalry…?

More Terrain… I’ve been working on a few more terrain boards – I’ve actually completed a few new ones and haven’t even taken pictures of them  - though I’ve been taking lots of picture ON one of them – I’ve been using it for all the figure pictures I’ve been doing lately. It’s a 2x2 board which is big enough to hold a unit and provide a bit of a background – but not so unwieldy – for carrying in and out of doors - as the bigger 3x3 boards!

A sample Napoleonic Prussian Landwehr from Warlord Games. I got a pack of ten of these in a recent order from Woodrow’s War Store - They’re blowing out a lot of stuff… they were, like, $11…? Since I’m painting up a few things for Song of Drums and Shakos…. So I thought what the heck!?

Now I know very little about the Napoleonic era – and the Prussians… I probably know least about… (They fought the French, right?). In the few references I have there is little mention of the Landwehr and no pictures. Luckily Warlord Games actually has a pretty decent article on their website about Prussian Landwehr Uniforms and loads of painted examples.

So this chap is, I guess from the 3^rd Regiment (yellow shoulder straps) of the Rhein (or maybe Brandenburg) landweher… I don’t know where either of them wouldhave seen action. I just chose  red… as some of the ones in pictures had red… I really don’t know which to do? Were there any regiments that were more numerous? Which would have seem more action? From the book I have on Waterloo it seems there was Westphalian (Green) and Elbe (Light Blue) Landwehr present there (as I mostly have British – seems a good idea to have ones that would have served in the vicinity of the British)? Any thoughts? Maybe I should just do some in Green and some in Light Blue and see which I like the looks of…

Any suggestions?

Napoleonic Highland casualty from Front Rank Figures - just didn’t quite get him done in time to post with the rest of the Highlanders

Napoleonic French Line Infantry casualty also from Front Rank Figures - unfortunately none of the individual figures I have for gaming with at this time are line infantry (they’re all Chasseurs!?)

Not Napoleonic… I’ve been wanting to track down some fantasy casualties for use when playing A Song of Blades and Heroes - to show where people have fallen. In other games - such as Savage Worlds – we just lay the figure down, but that has a particular meaning in the game other than wounded/dead and out of the game. We ordered a few a href="http://www.manticgames.com/">Mantic Games

boxes from Woodrow’s War Store last week (Elves for the Girl and Orcs and Undead for the Boy…) and I was excited to find there’s a dead Elf on every frame!? So here’s the first of… well… a few… I’ve also been converting a few others from assorted plastic figures I have kicking around…

Napoleonic Highlanders

I picked up a small batch of Wargames Foundry Napoleonic Highlanders off ebay a while back – not enough for a big battle unit… so I’m not sure why I bought them… seemed like a good idea at the time, perhaps? They’ve been sitting primed and based in a box for a few years and I decided to put some paint on them – just in case I ever decide to have a go at Song of Drums and Shakos.

Most of these Jocks are from Wargames Foundry - though there is one from Victrix!

There's a mix of Flank Company (Grenadier's and Light Infantry) and Center Company Jocks in this batch... but who's going to notice!? 

The pioneer on the left is from Victrix, nest to him is a Jock from Wargames Foundry. I'm not sure if the Victrix figure is still available - I can't seem to find it on their website...?

The end of our first Song of Blades and Heroes Campaign. After five games everyone had pretty much decided they'd had enough of this one and are keen to start another. Before we do that, however, I'd like to get a bit of painting done, make some more terrain, and play a few one-off games to try some things out - including some different versions of the rules - including Song of Drums and Shakos, Of Gods and Mortals, and A Fistful of Kung Fu... maybe even Tale of Blades and Heroes.

THE GAME

The Elves of Bolgen wood met Baron Phillipe’s men in a mountain pass…

Ugggghhhh…. EVERY GAME!? AT least The Baron went and DIDN’T roll a turn over (for once) and got the Men-at-Arms going with a group order. Dame Margrit got going… But when it game to the archers… it seemed they were busy still stringing their bows or something. These guys are Q2+ now, this shouldn't be happening - I think in Turn Two another one of the Q2+ archers rolled a turn-over - he was the last to go, but still... 

First round – the Elves made one of the Men-at-Arms duck for cover!

Amanda was trying to play a quick game because she still had packignto do before heading to Denver in the morning. So simply charged her elves right at me firing at a run!

Feeling a bit outnumbered.

The numbers were telling – everytime I got into combat I was outnumbering the elves.

Down they went…

Some got back up again.

But didn’t’ stay up for long…

After the battle the Elves checked their wounded and found the two archers were mosderately wounded (Q 3+ for the next game), but their leader would make a full recovery.

Checking for income the elves collected only 10 Gold. Baron Phillipe’s men, however, brought in 40gold – plus another 5 gold for the Alehouse.

During the Exploration phase the Elves… got lost… probably due to the head injuries… Baron Phillipe’s men stumbled upon a Thieves Den! Strangely he was actually able to recruit them to work for him and now I get to steal d6 gold from my opponent after each game!?

Totally dominating this campaign so far – which was not really my intention… Hard to get people to keep playing games with you if you keep trashing them game after game… Ah well, the campaign is almost over and they all still seem keen enough to play – already planning their NEXT wearbands!. Next time I’ll play Hobbits… or maybe goblinzes...?

GAME TWO

Brother and Sister once again clashed in an epic battle of sibling… er… something-or-other… I'd hoped we'd get this game down while Amanda was away and be ready to rage ahead with Round five on Saturday. Alas, it was not to be. These guys battled it out Saturday evening. Hopefully we'll get to Round Five this evening!

THE GAME

The Boy and his Lizards.

The Girl and her band of Warrior Wimyn.

End of The Girls second turn. 

On the Lizards’ second turn The Champion and a Lizardman warrior made it into contacts with one of the Elite Archers. Another Lizardman (the newly recruited one) made it into contact with another of the Elite Archers. In neither case did the Lizards have enough actions to actually ATTACK, but they got into contact, which meant two elite archer not shooting at them this turn.

On Keira’s third turn she moved her Wizard’s Apprentice up and transfixed the solitary lizard in contact with the nearest Elite Archer. Tehn moved the Warrior in and took it down with a powerful blow!

The Elite Archers on the hill and the Light Infantry slinger was brought up to pour arrows and stones down on the Lizardman Warrior at the bottom of the hill – but he was only recoiled…

The Humans’ leader ran down the hill to aid the outnumbered Archer, but was of little help – she recoiled from the combat. In the next turn the two Lizardmen still in contact with the archer took her down, then another moved into contact with the humans leader and took her out of the game as well…

Most of the Wimyn Warriors failed morale and ran a bit… At that point Keira decided to throw in the towel and retreated from the battle.

Checking their injured afterwards… Both Finnegan’s Lizardman Warrior and Keira’s Elite archer died! The Human’s leader recovered poorly and ended up with a permanent reduction in Combat.

Finnegan’s warband brought in 40 gold, and Keira’s (claiming the underdog bonus) brought in 60… just enough to replace the Elite Archer she lost… except it won’t have the experience (and the bonus Combat ability the dead one had just gained!)

Exploration turned up little. Finnegan’s Lizards came across a caravan, but they traded even-steven and no one came out with a profit. Keira encountered a roadside shrine and offered a gold piece to the gods… but alas, her prayers went unanswered….

Despite the harsh losses Keira's been facing, I think everyone's been enjoying the Song of Deeds and Glory campaign system so far!

In other news…

We (Amanda and I, not the kids!) finished off watching Game of Thrones Season Three on Friday evening… now we have to wait a year for Season four to be on DVD…

I do have the Audiobook of A Clash of Kings out from the library that I’d started earlier in the week (while Amanda was away) but then stopped to finish up The HBO series. I didn’t get back to it last night either as Season One of True Blood showed up at the library for me… probably won’t get to listening to anymore of the Audiobook this week...

I may have to pick up Fear and Faith sometime soon…

French Napoleonic Chasseurs

(and now for something completely different…)

I know what you’re thinking: “Say WHAAAAAAAAAT!?” I am, if nothing else, a sucker for a good deal… Woodrow’s War Store had a sale last summer and these – and all the other Hät 28mm plastics were on for crazy low prices… I think they were $7 a box… I convinced Amanda to pick me up a bunch for my birthday (this year!) and that’s why I’s at 724 28mm Figures Acquired this year already – 12 boxes of 32 plastic figures… French… Prussians… Bavarians…

I’d originally intended these for Napoleonic Wargaming by Neil Thomas – and that is still the plan, for the most part – but I have also since picked up Song of Drums and Shakos and so I thought I’d paint a handful of these up to try that out. I have a few individually based British Riflemen and Highlanders (though the latter need to be painted still…)

28mm plastic French Napoleonic Chasseurs from Hät.

There is so much wrong with that… plastic… Napoleonic… at least it isn’t 15mm!

Here’s one of them with two other 28mm Napoleonic infantrymen I have painted up – on the left is a figure from Wargames Foundry, and the on the right is an old Minifigs rifleman. The Hät figures are definitely a bit on the slighter side... 

I have enough for a skirmish now!

Finished up eight, a hundred more arrive… Woodrow’s War Store is actually having another blow out sale – so I ordered a shedload of Mantic Games fantasy stuff for the kids and… well.. since I was ordering stuff for them… I picked up a few packs of Warlord games stuff (which also is on sale – much of it 50% off – and a pack of French Napoleonic Voltiguers – I got the Chasseurs and Carabiniers in the last order, but they were out of the volitguers at the time… that pack along is 48 figures!?)

Five Halflings and a Paladin

That sounds like the beginning of a potentially crude joke "Five Halflings and a Paladin walk into a bar..."

In our A Song of Blades and Heroes Campaign I recruited a Blessed Paladin in my explorations, so I thought I’d best finish up an appropriate figure…

I think this is an old Citadel miniature – came in a pack with two other female warriors I think they were supposed to be the same character in three different stages of their career…? I thought she was suitably well-armoured to pass as a paladin. I'm not totally excited about the shield... I couldn't think of anything better and just didn't want to go with the standard variations of a cross. 



I love these old adventurer type figures that always have odd things tucked into their belts and stuff... this one has a corssbow and a small quiver of bolts...? 

A bunch of Halflings I picked up off ebay a few years back. I’d originally bough them to use on a Hordes of the Things Spear element… but more recently I thought it would be fun to have a Halfling warband for Song of Blades and Heroes and why buy new stuff if I have stuff sitting here? If ever I get back to playing Hordes of the Things… and want to build a Halfling army… I’ll just have to track down some more spear. I have no idea who manufactured these.
