Robin Hood and Others

A few more things rolling of the workbench this weekend – after satying up WAAAAAY too late last night…

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version):

Robin Hood and friends from Casting Room Miniatures .

Water elemental (something similar) lurking in a well! Or would it be a cistern – or a basin…? Not really w well because the water level is clearly above ground… anyway… the figure is a Reaper Miniatures translucent Bones figure that I got from the Bones Kickstarter II.

Treasure/objective markers (or market goods?) – I think some of these are Reaper Bones as well… The other one…? Not sure where it came from Foundry, maybe?

Tavern Maid from Citadel Miniatures…

Halfling – also from Citadel Miniatures.

Yet another Reaper Bones figure – a Paladin of sorts.

I’ve been updating some of the galleries I’ve added a bunch to the 28mm Modern Supers and Civilians Gallery - I added about 40 new pictures yesterday and have another 20 or so to spot this evening. Check them out!

I’m planning to add to and update all of the Gallery pages over the summer.

Odd and Sundry Bits…

I got in a solid afternoon of painting the other day with the kids (as well as an evening or two of painting while Amanda watched – and I listened to – a few episodes of the first season of Dollhouse) and finished up this odd assortment of bits rolling off the workbench… It’s nice that all our regularly scheduled activities are finally wrapping up and we have some time to do this!

Two WW2 Japanese on bicycles from Company B.

I have a dozen of these to do, but so far only have the officer and the LMG-gunner finished. The WW2 projects have been shelved for the moment as I’m moving on to other things…

Medieval Babes – actually both of these figures are supposed to be Maid Marions. The one on the left is from Trent Miniatures and the one on the right is from Casting Room Miniatures.

Wizard and the peasant. The wizard is an old figure… I’m not sure of the manufacturer – I want to say Grenadier, but I’m not 100% about that. The Peasant is from Crusader Miniatures.

The wizard I was originally apinting up to use as Raistlin – for a Dragonlance campaign I was running for the kids – but never quite got him finished before the campaign fizzled… I’ve been digging out wizards lately and trying to get a few painted up as Frostgrave is coming out in a few weeks and I thought I’d have a go at it with the kids.

A couple of signalers from the 3rd Canadian Division – figures from Great War Miniatures

A Commissar attached to a Tallarn Regiment that’s “gone a little native” (actually a converted Lawrence of Arabia figure from Artizan Designs that I’ve added a Games Workshop bolt pistol to…).

Last of the  Crusader Miniatures Irish Wolfhounds – I’d painted the rest a while back - you can see the complete unit on the 28mm Medieval and Medieval Fantasy Gallery - they’re near the bottom in the Medieval Irish Lion Rampant Retinue!

Another homemade cultist that didn’t quite make it into the last batch

Reaper Bones translucent plastic horrors!

Probably more odd and assorted items… 40K Catachans, Robin Hood and Crew, and such.

Under the Bunny Rampant Banner

I FINALLY finished up the last of the options for my (first) Lion Rampant retinue. By “options” I essentially mean I have painted FAR more units for this retinue than would be allowable in the standard 24-point retinue the game suggests – and far more than I’d ever be able to scrape together an opponent for… Heck I could make TWO retinues out of this batch!

The force is based around retinue of Baron Philippe du Lapin - a character I used as the leader of a  Brettonian Warhammer Fantasy Battle army… oh… 25 years ago (and possibly used as a character In Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play)!? (and in many other medieval skirmish games since then!) In fact some of the soldiers in a few of these units are from that very army – a mix of Citadel and Wargames Foundry figures that were all made by the Perrys (and I swear identical figures were marketed by both GW and the foundry at the same time!).

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version):

The Entire Retinue – 52-56 points, depending on upgrades taken…

Mounted Men-at-Arms – 6 points

These are the figures I just finished up this week to finish off the Retinue. The Figures are from Crusader Miniatures which I picked up as part of a Lion Rampant Deal from North Star Figures.

Mounted Sergeants (with Mounted Crossbow Upgrade) – 4 points

Old Citadel Miniatures (now sold by Wargames Foundry) - that I’ve had for over 25 years. They’ve been rebased a few times and a few were touched up recently…

Foot Men-at-Arms #1 – 6 points

A mix of old figures (mostly Wargames Foundry/Citadel MIniatures) I’ve had for 25+ years – all have been re-based, some have been entirely repainted, some touched up, others… not so much…

Foot Men-at-Arms #2 – 6 points

More of the Crusader Miniatures which I picked up as part of a Lion Rampant Deal from North Star Figures…. Why the heck did I feel I needed a second unit of Foot Men-at-Arms…!? I didn’t… They were just to pretty to give over to the opposing force/bad guys… I had to paint them in red with bunnies…

Foot Sergeants – 4 points

The last of the Crusader Miniatures which I picked up as part of a Lion Rampant Deal from North Star Figures that I kept for this force (the rest became part of my “opposing force”/Bad Guy retinue that I’m doing mostly in green and yellow).

Expert Foot Sergeants #1 – 6 points

Mostly old Wargames Foundry figures that I’ve had for decades.

Expert Foot Sergeants #2 – 6 points

Again, I really (REALLY) didn’t need ANOTHER unit of “Expert” Foot Sergeants… but I had these guys… and they were really nice figures (They’re Front Rank Figures, I think I got them in a trade a few years back…?)

Bidowers – 2 points

The only units not in red and white – because they’re sneaky-skirmishy woodsmen! More of the old Wargames Foundry figures that I’ve had for decades.

Archers #1 – 4 points (could be upgraded to “expert” for another 2 points…)

More of the old Wargames Foundry I got at the same time as the bidowers above – for the most part – there are a few home-cast figures hiding in the back that I added to fill out the ranks!

Archers #2 – 4 points (could also be upgraded to “expert” for another 2 points…)

As Archers#1 above…

Crossbow – 4 points

Same story as all the archer above (Wargames Foundry)

Casualty markers – some are from Crusader Miniatures, other are from “Casting Room Miniatures” which I bought from their ebay webstore (but were shipped from Wargames Foundry…?)

I’d like to do a few units of Serfs and Peasants to possibly field with them (or any other retinue) at some point…

Of course these could also be used for any other game that doesn’t have too specific basing requirements – I have used some of these in A Song of Blades and Heroes (and many would be perfect for Song of Arthur and Merlin) – which I still love for lower level skirmish gaming.

I do have stuff for two more Lion Rampant retinues. Another Generic Medieval (the “opposing force”) and a not-so-generic Medieval Irish retinue – with lots of Fierce Foot and Bidowers and a few hard-hitting Gallowglass!).

I’m quite looking forward to Dragon Rampant - perhaps I’ll be able to reorganize a few more of my old fantasy forces into small units for slightly larger scale actions with this system.

Also my kids have been working a couple of ) Lion Rampant retinues of their own (or WERE working, rather, as they’re onto other stuff at the moment). I picked up a pile of Hät 28mm plastic El Cid figures from a store that was blowing them out - originally for them to make DBA armies, but then are more interested in individually based figures for skirmishing with… The Boy has a force of Andalusians and The Girl has a force of Almoravids. I hope someday they get them done!

Coming soon on Tim’s Miniature Wargaming Blog:

One would think having finished these off I’d get to finishing one of the opposing force retinues… but I probably won’t as much as I’d like to play Lion Rampant, I need my basement gaming room cleaned out… and that likely won’t happen until the fall or winter… just too much other stuff to do… (which is why we’ve been doing a lot of boardgaming lately and not so much miniature gaming – boardgames can easily be set up on the kitchen table!)

I’m kind of torn as to what to work on next. I really should prioritize and make the best of my limited painting time… probably 40K or fantasy skirmish stuff… seems most likely to be needed/played with in the not-to-distant future.

Imperial Guard Jungle Fighters

Production has slowed significantly over the last few weeks… a lot of stuff wrapping up for us last week – last of the dance recitals… year-end portfolio review with home-based education coordinator… I put on some movies the last two evenings after the kids went to bed and that allowed me some time to finish up these lads…

(All of the figures pictured in this post are from Games Workshop. They are © and ™ Games Workshop and painted by myself and posted here entirely without their permission.)

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version):

Imperial Guard Catachan Jungle Fighters from Games Workshop.

I had planned on updating the 28mm Sci-Fi Gallery after this post with some updated photos of the Catachans... but after I got them all out I was utterly confused as to how I was trying to organize the units... I'll try and sort that out and hopefully in the next week or so I'll be able to update it with a slightly more complete looking force.

My plan is to, over the summer, update a bunch of the gallery pages with as many photos of all my toys as possible...

More Catachans are on the workbench… along with some WW2 Gurkhas and Japanese on bicycles… some Great War Canadians… Medieval Knights…

More Odd Bits: Snipers and Cultists

I stayed up late last night and watched American Sniper… I happened to have a few half finished 40K snipers on my painting table in the TV room, so I finished them up while watching…

The Cultists… well they’re another of those items that have been haunting the workbench in an almost completely painted state that I finished up the bases on and called them done.

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version):

Older Ratling Snipers from Games Workshop (the one I finished yesterday is included in the shot because this batch completes the unit).

Catachan Sniper (also from Games Workshop)

Cultists. These are figures I modeled, molded and cast myself – the cast figures look like the guy in the middle – the others I’ve added green stuff to make their robes longer. I painted them in black with a greenish-grey pallor to their skin so I could pass them off as members of the Esoteric Order of Dagon.

Coming soon on Tim’s Miniature Wargaming Blog:

Probably another handful of Catachans – they seem to be the closest to being finished of everything that’s crowding the workbench at the moment.

A Few Odd Items: Imperial Guard, Gurkha Officer, Scottsmen

Busy, busy, (school-y) year end stuff and cough that just won’t go away… STILL haven‘t gotten the garden in and just about every bike in the shed needing repair and half of them unrideable… In a week most of the CrAzY will be over, but at the moment it is all contributing to not getting much hobby stuff done…

Well… I got a few things done...

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version):

Two old Citadel Miniatures Rogue Trader era Imperial Guardsmen. These two veterans finish up my Company Command Team

Said Imperial Guard Company Command Team.

Ratling Sniper (four more just about complete to finish up the team)

Officer for a platoon of Gurkhas from Bolt Action Miniatures

Two odd scottsmen that were sitting on the workbench complete save for the bases along with some other half finished Scotsmen (the rest all needed tartan work). I was clearing off the workbench and figured I should just finish up the bases before putting them away in their drawer… I think they’re from  Old Glory.

Coming soon on Tim’s Miniature Wargaming Blog:

I did do some clearing of the workbench… but left and awful lot of stuff on the workbench to finish up… There are some WW2 Japanese on bicycles… some Gurkhas (to go with the officer above – which will be added to my Chindit force)…. There are some WW2 guys in Jeeps… a bunch of Great War Canadians and 40K Imperial Guardsmen… AND even some medieval knights – because they were the last six guys to finish off for a Lion Rampant retinue!?
