Campaign Considerations Part Three: Fantasy!

A third option I am considering is using Dragon Rampant and the same modified version of Mighty Empires I was going to use for the English Civil War campaign. Like the ECW campaign, this wouldn't be the spic sweeping wars between nations that were played out in previous Hordes of the Things campaigns. Rather this would be smaller scale action between neighbouring warlords and their personal retinues.

I DO have about six or seven forces I could easily put together to run a small-scale campaign of neighbouring minor warlords seeking to expand their holdings by carving out their neighbours

I THOUGH I’d have loads I could use… But I had a lot more bits and bobs and character than units. Where are the the forces I have that I could conceivable use…

Humans (Red and White)

  • 1x Elite Riders (6) @6 points
  • 1x Light Riders (6) @4 points
  • 2x Elite Foot (6) @6 points
  • 2x Heavy Foot (Billmen)  (12) @4 points
  • 1x Light Foot (Spears) (12) @3 points
  • 2x Light Missile (12) @4 points
  • 1x Heavy Missile (12) @4 points
  • 1x Scouts (6) @2 points

Total: 44 points! DONE!

Humans (Green and Gold)

  • 2x Heavy Riders (6) @4 points
  • 1x Elite Foot (6) @6 points
  • 1x Heavy Foot (Billmen)  (12) @4 points
  • 1x Heavy Missile (Crossbows) (12) @4 points
  • 1x Heavy Missile - Single Model Unit (cannon!?) (12) @4 points
  • 1x Scouts (6) @2 points

Total: 28 points! DONE!

Still to do:

  • 1x Elite Riders (6) @6 points

Mountain Dwarves

Some of these are still in the process of being re-based from Hordes of the Things multi-figure stands...
  • 1x Elite Riders - Single Model Unit (Dwarf Lord on BEAR!) (1) @6 points
  • 1x Elite Foot (6) @6 points
  • 4x Heavy Foot (Offensive)  (12) @6 points
  • 1x Heavy Missile (Handgunners) (12) @4 points

Total: 40 Points

Still to Do:

  • 4x Heavy Foot (Offensive)  (12) @6 points
  • 1x Heavy Foot (12) @4 points
  • 1x Heavy Missile (Crossbow) (12) @4 points
  • 1x Scouts (6) @2 points

Highland Dwarves

  • 1x Elite Foot (6) @6 points
  • 3x Belicose Foot (Terrifically Shiny Armour) (12) @6 Points
Total: 24 Points

No they're not wearing any actual armour - "Terrifically Shiny Armour" is an +2 Point upgrade that improves the Stamina of Belicose Foot and I figured, as Dwarves, they should be a little TOUGHER than your standard Belicose Foot... Then again... I guess I could be convinced to not use that - but not until I finish painting a few more units of them!

Still to do:

  • 3x Belicose Foot (Terrifically Shiny Armour) (12) @6 Points

Orange Orcs

  • 3x Heavy riders @4 points
  • 1x Belicose Foot @4 points
  • 1x Light Missile (12) @4 points
  • 1x Heavy Missile - Single Model Unit (Catapult) (1) @4 points

Total: 24 points

Still to Do: SO MANY!!!

Elves (Celtos)

With the light armour, I always imagined these to be sea-faring Elves of some sort.

  • 1x Elf Warlord (Elite Foot, Reduced Model Unit) @6 points
  • 1x Elf Spear (Light Foot) @3 points
  • 2x Elf Archers (Light Missiles, Sharpshooters) @6 points

Total: 24 Points! DONE!

High Elves

Not sure why I even considered these... waaaaaay too much to do here. Originally parts of an Elf Hordes of the Things Army that had THREE wizard elements (the Triple Wizard Combo!) which could be devastating. The idea was; Why send a living immortal elf into battle when the enemy could just be blasted from afar with magic? The warriors ended up just being a protection force for the Wizards. The magic rules in Dragon Rampant aren't awesome - they seem really costly for what they end up doing, especially when you can just call a wizard an Elite Foot, Single Model Unit with Missiles @8 points - the high stamina is simply magical wards and all their attacks, ranged or melee are just some kind of magic as well...

I guess I could field this as:

  • 2x Elite Foot (Single Model Unit, Missiles) (1) @8 points
  • 2x Heavy Foot (12) @4 points

Total: 24 points.

Two bad ass wizards dealing out some pain and a pair of units to be their bodyguards!

Lots that could be added to the force... More Heavy Foot, Light Missiles, Elite Riders, Light Riders, Scouts....

Wood Elves

  • 3x Bellicose Foot (Reduced Model Unit, Terrifically Shiny Armour) (6) @6 points
  • 1x Scouts (Reduced Model Unit) (3) @2 points

Total: 20

To Do:

  • 1x Elite Rider (Single Model Unit, Flying) @ 8 points
  • 2x Heavy Riders (6) @4 points
  • 1x Light Missile (Sharpshooters) @6 points

Halflings

The Halfling Hollow Defence League

  • 1x Light Foot (+Short Range Missiles) (12) @4points
  • 2x Light Missile (Sharpshooters) (12) @6 Points
  • 4x Scouts (6) @2 points

Total: 22 Points

To Do:

  • 4x Scouts (6) @2 points
  • 1x Hordes (12) @1 point

Conclusions

Well... There ARE at least six forces that are painted and more or less ready to go. MOST forces have OPTIONS to add to the force if there was gold left over after hiring replacements for combat losses... Which is a fun element I would like to have in the campaigns. Kind of like having a role-playing game character - gaining abilities - it's nice to see something grow or... have the potential to grow....? If one didn't lose ALL their battles and land!?

Despite that, I think I might got with the Back of Beyond Campaign and the bolsheviks will just have to borrow Artillery and Cavalry from the Tsarists when they end up in battle.

So I will continue work on the campaign rules and post them here in a day or two! Stay tuned!

(if all goes well, I will get to run ALL THREE of these campaigns - Fantasy, English Civil War, and Russian Civil War - maybe even all three THIS YEAR! This excercise was just to help me determine which one to START with!!)
