Spearhead: Sand and Bone (and Fangs of the Blood God)

So painting up all these Khorne daemons, ostensibly for Warhammer 40,000... I got thinking about Age of Sigmar again... and then I started painting more Blades of Khorne... and then they announced the new Blades of Khorne Battletome... and a new Khorne Spearhead Army that will be included in the Battletome (and, presumably, sold in it's own boxed set...?)

Fangs of the Blood God! (The picture above is Copyright ©2025 Games Workshop and used here entirely without their permission)

So I did a thing...

The new Spearhead: Sand and Bone and the Claws of Karanak - the only unit I don't have to fill out a Fangs of the Blood God Spearhead army!

I had initially told myself I wasn't going to buy Sand and Bone until I'd actually STARTED playing some games of Spearhead again... but I made some plans with a friend to play some games over the next few weeks.. and I wasn't going to buy the Claws of Karanak until I was DONE the Skullreapers... but then I happened to be in the vicinity of my FLGS - Dragon's Den Games - this afternoon... so I went ahead and picked them both up...

This way I can get the new terrain painted up this week and the Claws of Karanak finished up in the next week or so and have them ready for when the new Battletome comes out and the rules for the Fangs of the Blood God are released!

BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!!!

Mighty Lord of Khorne

Not at Daemon!

Mighty Lord of Khorne

I've been working on this guy, on and off, for almost a year... Not totally happy with it... but I'm calling it DONE and moving on!

This finishes up the Khorne Bloodborn Heroes (that I'm going to paint!)

(I do actually have a second Bloodstoker and a second Bloodsecrator, but I'm not sure I'll actually ever use them... But you never know... the new Battletome comes out in a just over two weeks and maybe they'll have totally new, amazing abilities and I'll want five of each!? Or... maybe they won't even be things that are IN a Blades of Khorne army!? I was a little worried as I noticed there were no Bloodstokers, Bloodsecrators, or Mighty Lords of Khorne even ON the GW website a week ago... but then on Sunday in the Pre-order Preview all three showed up in the new Gorblade Warband that will be released alongside the new Battletome!)

All of the Bloodbound!

So Far!

This can currently be organized into three Regiments

General's Regiment

  • Hero - Mighty Lord of Khorne (1) 130
  • Unit - Bloodsecrator (1) 130
  • Unit - Bloodstoker (1) 100
  • Unit - Mighty Skullcrushers (3) 220
  • Unit - Korgorath (1) 120

Total: 700

Regiment

  • Hero - Slaughterpriest (1) 160
  • Unit - Bloodreavers (10) 90

Total: 250

Regiment

  • Hero - Slaughterpriest (1) 160
  • Unit - Blood Warriors (10) 220

Total: 380

Army Total: 1330

I don't have a LOT left... there are the aforementioned bonus Bloodsecrator/Bloodstoker, and then I have five Skullreapers, ten Blood Warriors and thirty Bloodreavers!? Once I have them done, I'll have slightly over 2000 points of just Bloodbound (PLUS another 1820 points of Daemons!)

(oh, and the Gorechosen of Dromm - Warhammer Underworlds warband, that aren't really useable in Age of Sigmar any more...)

ALL of the Blades of Khorne!

Currently about 3150 points...

and I don't even have a Bloodthirster or a Daemon Prince of Khorne in there!?

Wow that's a lot! By far the largest Age of Sigmar army I have. Hedonites of Slaanesh are probably close... if ever I got all the seekers and daemonettes and chariots finished...

I should have the Skullreapers done in the next few days.

Bloodletters

I finished up the TWENTY Bloodletters!

This finishes off the Chaos Daemons Combat Patrol I bought a few weeks ago - it also finishes up ALL of the Khorne Daemons, including ones I've had for years! (I do still have a few Khorne Bloodbound I could finish up!)

Twenty Bloodletters!

One unit of ten Bloodletters

Another unit of ten Bloodletters

ALL THE DAEMONS

In Age of Sigmar, just these daemons adds up to 1920 points!? It could be fielded as an army all on it's own!! (I have almost as many Bloodbound - or, will have, when they're all finished... they could fight each other!)

In Warhammer 40,000 this only adds up to 1130 points...? So enough for a Chaos Daemons starter Crusade force, and a few things to add to it... but not a full 2000 point tournament force.

I briefly wondered about a World Eaters force (the Combat Patrol looks fun - with a DAemon Prince of Khorne!) but in the World Eaters force, Karanak and the Bloodmasters aren't allowed... and I imagine, like the Emperor's Children, daemons are probably only allowed in one of the Detachments and only allowed to make up 50% of the force... But the World Eaters Combat Patrol is only 500 points, so if I wanted to build anything other than a starter Crusade force (of 1000 points), that would be MORE stuff I'd have to buy... (I'd hoped maybe some of the old Chaos Space Marine stuff I have that didn't make it into the Emperor's Children codex might be allowed in the World Eaters - Venomcrawler, Obliterators, Master of Possession, etc.) alas... none were... so probably not going to bother with that.

It has just occurred to me that I did not take a picture of the Combat Patrol... which was why I bought this latest batch of things... Ah well...

All of the Blades of Khorne, so far...

I do hope I'll get another couple small batches of Blades of Khorne units while riding this current wave of enthusiasm... Mighty Lord of Khorne, the Skullreapers and ten Blood Warriors. If I got all those done (and half of them are MOSTLY done...) the only thing I'd have left to do are thirty or so Bloodreavers?

So I'd started painting these with Warhammer 40,000 in mind, as either a Combat Patrol on their own, or random wandering daemons in Crusade: Armageddon, etc... in the process of painting this batch of daemons, it's gotten me thinking a lot about Age of Sigmar again...

It didn't help that yesterday the Sunday preview on Warhammer Community announced that the new Blades of Khorne Battletome will be available for pre-order next week... and there will be a new Khorne Spearhead army (which I have MOST of the stuff for!)

That led to thinking about running a Vampire-themed game of Soulbound... using the archetypes from Champions of Death... and... maybe the group ISN'T Soulbound. (This is the thing I like LEAST about Soulbound... is the fact that it is so focused on playing a soulbinding, it is so limiting... why not have just called it the Age of Sigmar Role-Playing game... have Soulbinding be an OPTION for a type of campaign...)

Oh! AND! This puts me back in the Black for this year - at least for 28mm foot figures - 272 purchased (or otherwise aquired through trade, etc!) and 282 PAINTED! (Also I've traded away over 100 minis, so the overall ratio of painted to unpainted is even highter!)

Bloodstoker

I finished ANOTHER ONE!?

Bloodstoker.

Like the Bloodsecrator I finished earlier in the day... (well... I finished it last night and POSTED it earlier today!?), this is another Khorne Bloodborn Hero - that could lead a Regiment, or can join a Mighty Lord of Khorne's Regiment as a Bloodbound Warmonger. He will probably be used as the latter, if ever he gets used at all.

This guy is 100 points and.. he's tough.. Not as tough as the Bloodsecrator, but not terrible... and he has a special ability that makes ONE, non-Hero Bloodbound unit that is within combat range of him, charge even after it ran.... once per turn... I'm just not sure if that is worth it... given that a whole unit of TEN Bloodreavers is only 110 points...?

I guess maybe I should try PLAYING THE GAME sometime!?

All the mortal Bloodbound Heroes (so far); Bloodstoker, Bloodsecrator, and two Slaughterpriests. It's weird that the one that is the most extended and likely to tip over is the one with the smallest base!? I was tempted to just put it on a 40mm base like the others (honestly, I still kind of am tempted). But I'm not sure how sticky AoS players get about using the "proper" base size... especially for a model that has a "wholly within" power (as a slightly larger base makes the footprint of what that unit that is "wholly within" marginally larger!?)

I do have a Mighty Lord of Khorne I am trying really hard to finish up before I totally lose momentum on the Khorney stuff... and twenty Bloodletters...

Bloodsecrator

What exactly IS a  "Bloodsecrator"...? I don't know... Big mortal worshipper of Khorne that carried a GREAT BIG icon of Khorne...

Bloodsecrator

In the current edition of Age of Sigmar, once per game during any combat phase, he can slam his banner into the ground sending out a shockwave of raw Khorne energies (not magic! just vibes, or something) and ALL Bloodbound get +1 attacks... Also he gives a passive bonus for any Bloodbound units wholly within 12" whenever they try to rally... for 130 points...? Is he worth it? I have no idea...

He can also lead a regiment or join the regiments of Mighty Lord of Khorne as a "Bloodbound Warmonger" (a character that can join a regiment led by another character). I'd probably have him do the latter, if ever I fielded a Khorne army in an actual game of Age of Sigmar!? I have far too many Heroes and leaders!

the Mighty Lord of Khorne is one of the others currently on the workbench, along with a Bloodstoker (ANOTHER character, but also another Bloodbound Warmonger - so I can have a regiment, led by the Mighty Lord of Khorne, with the Bloodsecrator AND the Bloodstoker in it along with two other units!)

I actually have a. second one of these... and a second Bloodstoker!? Not sure what I'm going to do with either, as I just DO NOT need that many Heroes! Even if I was going to do an entire 2000 point force of purely Bloodbound (mortal worshippers of Khorne), without any Daemons, I don't think I'd need all the Hero/Characters I have...

Bloodcrushers

 The Khorne Daemon Horde grows...

Bloodcrushers

Three of these came from the Realm of Chaos: Wrath and Rapture box I picked up six years ago. The other three came from the more recent Chaos Daemons Combat Patrol box. In both Age of Sigmar and 40K they can be fielded in units of three or six. As a unit of three though it's just a Commander, a Standard Bearer and a Horn Blower... which I think would look a little silly, romping around the battlefield on it's own... let along TWO of them... So when I got the additional three, I just did them as riders to fill out a unit of six!

These took a bit longer than I'd expected - for a model with, like, basically three colours... There ended up being so many shades of red layered over each other (not that I can even tell... just looks... RED!?).

ALL THE KHORNE DAEMONSES!

I just have twenty Bloodletters to finish up.

I thought I'd be done them all by now, but I've been distracted by other things.. A few of the mortal Blades of Khorne warriors made it on to the painting desk and I've been working on a few of those at the same time. I'm not sure if I'll finish them all... when the Bloodletters are done, I may put most of them back in storage... but I might finish up one or two of the champions/leaders...?

Warhammer Quest: Cursed City - Session Twenty-Nine - THE FINAL ASSAULT?!

Well this is it.. After a little over half a year of almost weekly games (28 games over 31 weeks - we missed a few weeks here and there, but had played some extras over the holidaze!), the Heroes were ready to make their first attempt to take on The Wolfking, himself, Tyrant of Ulfenkarn...

Finnegan was playing Brutogg Corpse-Eater and Octren Glimscry. Amanda played Qulathis the Exile and Glaurio ven Alten III.  (And, as ever, I was the Game Master, controlling all the hostiles and keeping the game moving!)

In the Previous Journey, the Extraction Event had indicated that The Wolfking had caught their scent and was tracking them and thus would replace whatever was the second hostile on the initiative track at the beginning of the next game... So Radukar was there waiting for them when they arrived to take him out!

Then I drew the Vargskyr for the FIRST space on the initiative track! Yikes!

Octren Glimscry was the first to go and stepped out and Cursed the Vargskyr - his new Level Four ability - once per turn on his activation, he can curse one hostile within sight... then he failed to deal any damage with his remaining attacks...

So Glaurio had to come out and help... but even he could not finish off the Vargskyr!?

Qulathis did, though...

and even had an activation left to take a shot at Radukar!

Brutogg then charged in and finished off Radukar!

On the next turn, Octren moved forward and opened the next door... and found some Vyrkos Blood-Born vampires lurking behind it!

He cursed he first one he encounter and then attacked it.

Glaurio finished the first one off with a shot and then charged in to finish off the second one! Boom TWO inspriations points, just like that!

Brutogg pushed by and started smashing skeletons apart...

Beyond that was.... RADUKAR AGAIN!?!?

and another patrol of the Ulfenwatch and some Deadwalker Zombies!

Between Glaurio and Qulathis, he was taken down by shot and arrow!?

And then Brutogg got to work smashing up more skeletons!

and then kind of got swarmed by them... and the zombies...

It LOOKED kind of bad, but none of them seemed to be able to land blows on the hulking brute!

So glad he was on their side!

The others joined in and helped the ogor clear out the zombies and skeletons...

and moved on..

Next they encountered MORE Zombies and some Corpse Rats and Bats!

Which they worked through with relative ease...

Brutogg had a little snack along the way - to keep his energy levels up...

And then they ran into a pair of Kosargi Nightguard...

Brutogg started in on them...

He was joined by Octren, who cursed one of them.. and then used his Tomes of Death ability to make the Kosargi Nightguard ATTACK EACH OTHER. (He told the one that that other had said something terribly rude about his mother... so the one struck the other, and the other retaliated... dealing some pretty serious damage to each other!)

Glaurio stepped up and shot one in the face, finishing it off... The Qulathis caught up and finished off the second one!

There were a few Zombies to clear away...

And everyone made it to the secret entry to the Ebon Citadel where they would confront Radukar the Wolf for one last time (maybe?) in his throne room!

We had originally planned to call it quits here and play the second part on Wednesday (our regular night for Warhammer Quest!)... but the first part went quickly enough, it was decided to forge ahead with the second part this evening - the raid on Radukar's inner sanctum to destroy his Gravesand Phylacteries and destroy HIM once and for all!

All set up for the second part.

There was a bit of discussion of strategy...

Radukar doesn't even show up on the board until the first Phylactery is destroyed!

The Kosargi Nightguard do not activate until they have taken damage or start an activation with a Hero visible to them (though there are events that can cause them to move before that!).

The other Hostiles present were a trio of Vyrkos Blood-Born vampires.

All three of these groups - Radukar, the Kosargi Nightguard, and the Vyrkos Blood-Born - all get SUPER deadly after dark... and by the time the Heroes had arrived, it was well after dark.

As with the other Decapitation Journeys, any hostiles that are not on the board when their group activates are rolled for and potentially come back. (Also Radukar has activations that summon Vyrkos onto the table and/or give them extra actions...)

The Kosargi were the first on the initiative track, but as they were not injured and had no Heroes in sight, remained on guard at their respective Gravesand Phylacteries.

Glaurio was the next to go, and kind of wasted actions moving out to where he could see the Vyrkos taking a few shots, most of which missed, and then spent actions moving back into the start area... If he'd just held his actions he would have had MORE actions to shoot at or stab as they moved in and attacked... alas...

When the Vyrkos went they charged and trapped everyone in the entrance... at least here they could only attack with two of their number. Still they grievously wounded Glaurio, dealing four damage! (even after he re-rolled his defence...)

Brutogg went and finished off the vampire Glaurio had wounded and beat down the other one that had so gravely injured Glaurio...

Then Qulathis moved out and injured the third vampire. She is not-so-great when not inspired... but holy heck does she get NASTY once her card flips to the Inspired side!

Octern moved out of the entry area and helped finish off that third vampire...

The round end event had one of the Kosargi Nightguard move from his post - he probably heard the commotion out in the hall and went to investigate. His move got him to the door, where he'd be able to see Qulathis and Octren, so that one would be activating when their next card came up!

And move it did! Seriously injuring Qulathis! (4 damage, I think!?)

Glaurio took a few shots injuring the undead Ogor. The Octren cursed the Nightguard and finished off the lumbering brute!

He had enough activations left to move in and attack the other Kosargi Nightguard... but missed... and effectively blocked Brutogg from getting to it in one action..

Qulathis went last and used her two activations to move into the room vacated by the Kosarge Nightguard, and smashed the first Gravesand Phylactery! I think at this point she chugged her Potion of Coagulated Vitality and removed all the wounds - so she could have all her activations next turn... or.. be able to take some damage and not die! Glaurio had done the same on his turn (it was VERY lucky that they'd both had Potions of Coagulated Vitality and had been able to save them for this Journey!)

In THIS final Decapitation Journey, not only do the heroes have to do a 4+ action to destroy the Phylactery, they also have to roll a success on a d12! (Which Amanda did, so it was fine!)

Radukar felt the shift in his blackened soul and came running...

Initially Qulathis was in the second last position on the Initiative Track and Radukar was going first... So Amanda attempted a gambit... and succeeded - putting Qulathis in first and Radukar in second last... ALL the heroes it turned out would be going before all the hostiles!

So Qulathis ran away! She stopped at the door to take a shot at Radukar, injuring him slightly...

But then dashed into his Throne Room and smashed ANOTHER of his Gravesand Phylacteries!!

Glaurio stepped to the door and shot Radukar three times - wounds which would have killed him... instead the THIRD Phylactery shattered in the room with Brutogg and Octren!

Brutogg finished off the second Kosargi Nightguard...

and then moved to block The Wolf from getting at his little friends.

Octren went next and there was a bit of a debate about what he should do. Finnegan had initially wanted to go to the door and curse Radukar (as that would mean anyone attacking would do more damage...) but it was pointed out that if he used all his activations he had just enough to run into the Throne Room and smash the last Phylactery!

And he did so...

Radkar stepped in and attacked Brutogg twice. For the first attack, Brutogg was able to reduce all but one of the damage, and then had a Curse Catcher (magic item) to remove the curse he'd take from being wounded by Radukar! The second attack also got a damage or two through and so now Brutogg was cursed (and stunned!)

The End of Turn Event put Radukar's initiative card at the front of the Initiative Track... and Glaurio was dead last!

Amanda attempted a gambit for Glaurio and initially failed... but then rolled a crit for the second attempt! This put him in first place.

So Glaurio shot Radukar three more times, dealing NINE damage...

Then used his final activation and a destiny die to step in and finish Radukar off with his sword!!

Glaurio ven Alten III brought down the Wolfking!

There was no exit location for this scenario, the instructions are simply, if Radukar is slain, open the sealed envelope in the box and read it! So we let Amanda do that, since it was her character that took him down!

SPOILERS!!!

He doesn't die... We kind of knew that because they made a Radukar the Beast miniature... and it's one that's used in the sequel campaign; Night Wars. It narratively describes how he goes all Vargskyr and leaps out the window and tears down the walls of the Ebon Citadel and escapes into the night. For a time things get better in Ulffenkarn... but then one day Hysh does not rise and the realm is plunged into an eternal night!?

Yikes... so.. all further games played count as Night... when all the creatures get NASTY!!

Finnegan pointed out that this makes Octren Glimscry's Tomes of Death ability better - because when he has hostiles attack each other, they deal more damage - enough for skeletons to now kill each other - if they hit! (a small silver lining, I guess...?)

It states the Influence is reduced to zero and the Fear is reset at five...

I guess I need to crack open Night Wars and start reading...

I'd thought maybe we'd take a break. Amanda is leaving on a vacation in less than two week and will be gone until sometime in August. But then Amanda said we should just keep playing - including the next day - WEDNESDAY - our regular Warhammer Quest night!?

So... maybe tune in tomorrow for the continuing adventures...?
