A few fun things arrived in the post this week....
This arrived earlier in the week.
It's an Arvus Lighter - a small shuttle landing craft. I thought it might be handy for the Rogue Trader campaign - for lots of fighting retreat actions when things go south dirtside ("Git to da Lightah!")
And then this big bad boy showed up today...
It's an old Armorcast Warhound Titan for 40K - in great shape, primed, all parts intact... and for less than a quarter of what a new Forge World one would have set me back!
Just to give you a sense of how ridiculously big it is - here it is with a few other 40K items including a Scout Sentinel, a Leman Russ Battle Tank (the standard battle tank of the Astra Militarum - the smaller of the two), and a super heavy Shadowsword tank...
The big questions in my mind are: Does Tallarn have it's own Titan Legion(s)... and, if so, do I paint it in the same camouflage as the rest of the Tallarn equipment? I mean, when we get to things the size of titans, is camouflage REALLY going to fool anyone?
"Gosh Sarge, that's a really big dune up ahead"
"THAT'S NO DUNE!!!"
Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:
I finished painting ANOTHER Special Weapon Squad last night while we watched the last two episodes of Heroes Season Two. I just have to finish up the bases. A second Special Weapon Squad needs only the webbing painted and then they'll be done. So those will probably be the next to show up here...
I do have some Tau that I really need to get done... but the Titan and Lighter are all shiny and new... and that Shadowsword is getting close to completion... so...
They painted ww2 battleships with camo, so why not a titan?
ReplyDeleteYou know I was just thinking about the same thing after I posted this - the Dazzle Camouflage they used on ships in the Great War (and still used on some ships in WW2)!
DeleteI seem to recall when the very first edition of Adeptus Titanicus came out the top of the carapaces were painted in camouflage... (or maybe that was just me and my own titans... still kicking myself for getting rid of those!) Now things seem to be painted in the style of fancy liveries of knights - which has it's own appeal...
Ah, it wasn't JUST me - here's a picture of someone who had done the same thing:

DeleteTallarn does not have it's own Titan Legion. Legio Ignatum did fight on Tallarn during the Horus Heresy and also fought alongside Tallarn forces in the Taros Campaign (Imperial Armour Volume 3). http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Legio_Ignatum
ReplyDeleteWell now I know! Thanks Scott!
DeleteI think the carapace might be camo use against aerial spotting? The titans I beleive are usually considered to be pretty inspirational (or terrifying to their enemy) bits of gear so you'd want the ground pounders to see them just fine.
ReplyDeleteExactly! About the camp vs. aerial spotting, that is.
DeleteThough I often wonder how much use visual camouflage would really be useful in the 41st millennium...?
A fair amount I would guess. Prior to the recent changes (i.e. return of the primarchs and embrace of tech progress) the imperium has superstition based technology that will not embrace new technology, only traditional designs that have been rediscovered. When you look at why they arm Imperial guard with lasguns (super reliable, easy to maintain, basic, even feral troops can be trained with it) you get a sense there aren't a lot of tech minded troops on the front lines.
DeleteI think you run into the situation as well where even when you have stealth planes, if you opponent can obtain a visual fix on you it's a problem. You are only as stealthy as your least stealthy aspect?
Your toys, paint them how you like! Super heavy tank already looks great! Ship camo was for the sea, would your titans need to be cloud or sky if their viewed from the ground?
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Cloud - brilliant!
DeleteI know in WW2 some Firefly tanks painted part of their longer barrels light blue in hopes that they might be mistaken for the shorter barrelled regular Shermans and thus selected out as a priority target...? Of course - what colour are the skies on distant planets...?
A titan is always more about looks than functionality, so keep that in mind when you paint it.
ReplyDeleteAnd I have always loved the Arvus. Wish they made on in plastic.
I wish they had a lot more general use sci-fi vehicles in plastic...
Deletethanks!
Oh wow, some good times will be coming down the pipe here!!
ReplyDeleteWell I certainly hope so!
DeleteThanks Greg!
