Kill Team: Drukhari versus Astra Militarum

Wow... Despite all the painting going on, it's been a MONTH since anyone played Kill Team around here. (And two weeks since anyone played ANY other games... so the Game-A-Day Challenge ended up a totally failure...).

This evening, however, Amanda and I sat down and played through a game. We actually first sat down in the afternoon, but it took some time going over all the rules and she ended up having to talk The Girl out to a dance lesson... but after they got back and we'd had supper, we finally got to play a game!

I didn't come up with much of a narrative for this one. I also didn't even take any notes or very many pictures - because the game took pretty long as it was because I was explaining so many things...

SCENARIO

We rolled on the table in the back of the main rulebook and got Terror Tactics. Both sides were trying to break through the others lines - 2VP for every model exited off the opponents base edge, 1 for each opponent taken out of action - UNLESS a turn ends with one team being broken, then the game instantly ends and the broken team loses.

THE GAME

Amanda had the greatest strategic advantage and so chose her side and I started setting up.

Drukhai all set up and ready to rumble!

I had the initiative for the first round - which I DIDN'T want! I would have rather the Drukhari had to move first - as they would be way out of range for charging and I could move up to be within 12" and get lots of shooting. As it was a moved my troops up cautiously - trying to keep them far enough back that it was unlikely they would be charged, and would be in good positions to fire on the advancing Drukhari.

Amanda tried to charge with ONE of her Wych Fighters and failed... After that she just said "EFF it!" and everyone just did a full move - so they could shoot and be super close to try and charge the following turn.

Kabalite Dark Lance sniper blew one of my troopers away! It was SUPER-OVER-KILL with Strength 8 and -4 AP!

Guard firing line.

When all the shooting in Round One was done there were two out of action for each team, and one of my troopers had a flesh wound. If I could keep up this rate of attrition, things might be not-so-bad... Amanda also saw this and started to wonder what kind of junk Kill Team I had put together for her. I assured her that things were going to go very poorly for me in the not-too-distant future...

In Round Two the Drukhari had the initiative and everyone charged... well... except the Sniper with the Dark Lance. I charged a few into the assorted melees hoping to help those caught up by the Drukhai. I had three that had eyes on the Drukhari sniper so I readied them (sniper, grenade launcher and Plasma gun). In the Shooting phase the grenadier rolled SIX attacks against the Kabalite sniper and blew her away! Again, Amanda super unimpressed... Then there was the fight phase and she only managed to take out a couple more of my troopers (I had the most INSANE good luck with the armour saves! Never have I rolled so many fives and sixes in one round!) But the end of the round she had three out of action...? I had four...? Maybe...? plus a couple of troops with flesh wounds...

Then it was Round Three and the Flensing Fury bonus kicked in for the Drukhari (+1 to all hit rolls in the Fight Phase... They're already all 3+, so they were effectively hitting on anything but a one and most of them had three attacks!)

I had four that were making for the end zone, which temporarily had Amanda panicked - 2VP each for those that got off! EIGHT POINTS she thought - compared to the four she currently had for taking out a few of my troops...

And then we got to the Fight Phase and it all went downhill for me... She took out SIX more of my troops in the one fight phase.. I think I might have gotten lucky and took one of them with me... maybe...? maybe not...

Hekatrix Vulvatrix of the Crimson Wave roaring with delight as she flayed her foes with her Agonizer!

And then I failed a break test in the Morale Phase and the game was over and Amanda's Drukhari won.

Yeah...

I have to admit, there is an overwhelming amount of stuff to learn for a new beginner. Amanda's played 40K and Shadow War: Armageddon before, but not enough to really know even the basic warhammery rules... on top of that is all the basic tactic cards... and the special abilities of he different troops and then all the other special abilities of  each of her specialists and then THEIR special tactic cards and then all the Drukhari special tactic cards... Yeah... the game took a while to play and she might have the basics... but has no idea about the tactics cards or how to really use them - though she did use more of her command points than I did... (mostly because I was pointing out situations where particular tactic cards would work really well for her...).

Fun game though. I can't wait to get a campaign going!

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

I think Finnegan's a bit ahead in his schoolwork, so I might try and convince him to play a few games of Kill Team over the next week - stay tuned for game reports of those! Next weekend in the Thanksgiving long weekend here in Canada - and we have three days with no regularly scheduled activities - so I'm REALLY hoping we'll get a BUNCH of gaming in then. Maybe not all Kill Team, but at least SOME Kill Team (and maybe a few other games as well).

working on Adeptus Mechanicus and Chaos Kill Teams this week - hopefully I'll have some pics of them to post soon. I'd be really happy if I could get one (or BOTH!) of those done before the weekend so I could try them out... Less than two weeks to ToonCon!

Genestealer Kill Teams (and Other Bits)

I may have mentioned I picked up The Writhing Shadow - the Tyranid/Genestealer starter set for Kill Team. I thought it might be a good Kill Team to have as a loaner and use for the ToonCon game - it only comes with Genestealers so it's only ONE troop type to have to worry about and there isn't much variation at all between them - other than the specialist abilities. I know, I know... I could have use the Space Hulk Genestealers... I've actually painted these new ones to match the ones I already painted so they could be used together - including using the same 32mm Necromunda bases. I picked up the box set to get the cards and a little bit more terrain... (I apparently didn't have enough Sector Munitorum Terrain....?)

Genestealer Kill Team

this is actually only 88 points, so I could fit in one more (making it 99) and will likely just borrow one of Finnegan's Space Hulk Genestealers...

The figures included COULD be built and assembled to make a team worth 96 points if they were all given Toxin Sacs. Toxin Sacs seems pretty weak for this game (if you roll 6+ to wound you deal and extra point of damage - but over 90% of the figures in this game only have one wound anyway) so I just went with what was on the cards, which will allow me a whole extra Genestealer.

Each Kill Team that comes in a Kill Team starter set or the core box or Rogue Trader, comes with pre-printed cards for a ready-made Kill Team. For the most part I've just been ignoring them as I don't care for their particular equipment load-outs. For this team, however, I assembled them as per the cards, so I could actually make use of them... I may not call it "Kill Team: The Writhing Shadow" or anything... but I'll use the cards with their particular specialisms and names and stuff...

The is the leader specialist: Nemesis Alpha - "spitter". You can only really tell by the greenish, scrotum-like sack under his jaw - the acid juice storage sack for his Acid Maw!

Nemesis Beta - "The Shadow" - is the Scout Specialist. It's got Flesh Hooks (the pointy, stubby things coming out of his mouth.

Nemesis Crucius - "The Terror" - has an Extended Darapace and Scything Talons. It is the Veteran Specialist

Nemesis Decima - "Mindeater" is the combat specialist. I gave him this odd head with the tentacle face to differentiate him from the other generic genestealer with Scything Talons. Also it's name is "Mindeater" and the head kinda f reminded me of a Mind Flayer...?

The rest of the Kill Team (from the box, that I just finished painting..) these are all just generic Genestealers. There are names for all of them on their cards... but I can't be bothered to type them all out. One of them has Scything Talons, which I think are of limited use... You re-roll 1s to hit when using them... but honestly I think I'd rather use the Rending Claws which, if you roll a 6+ to wound, is resolved at -4AP instead of the -1... Oh, and Scything Talons are 0AP... so... They're already WS3+ and have three attacks... so...

As I mentioned these will be joined by one of the Space Hulk Genestealers.

I had picked up the cheap box of Termagaunts (5/$12CAD), but they have "Instinctive Behaviour" and need a "Synapse" model on the table or they only move towards and attack the nearest enemy model and are -1 to hit with shooting!? I don't feel like getting a $60 box of Tyranid Warriors to make them not-totally-inneffective in the game... so they'll probably just get used in Wrath & Glory...

In other news...

A little objective marker I made for Kill Team (or 40K... or.. any sci-fi game requiring objective markers).

I picked up a box of Mechanicus bases for the Sicarians I bought to add to my Adeptus Mechanicus Kill Team. The Skitarri were already on Necromunda bases, and I wanted to base the Sicarians similarly, but they don't make 40mm Necromunda bases... I figured the Mechanicus bases were pretty close... So, I have a bunch of extra mechanicus bases - and the bases come with other little bits and bobs you can put on them - so, I used some to make this objective marker with a little stack and a control panel.

I've also been working on a few more crates and barrels. I have a pile sitting next to the painting desk and just grab a few to paint when I just need to do... something else... or while waiting for paint to dry one whatever I'm working on. I've accumulated enough painted ones I thought I'd include them in this update... Most of these came with the Sector Munitorum Kill Zone (or Imperial Guard Starter - which came with more Sector Munitorum stuff...). The fancier crates came with the Rogue Trader box.

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

Could it be a game report!? I did set up a game for Amanda and I to play... and then started explaining all the rules and stuff... but then she had to run out and take The Girl to Irish Dance class... it's still set up on the table and she SAID she'd play when she gets home...

Other than that...? I have both Adeptus Mechanicus and Chaos Space Marine Kill Teams on the workbench - the other two teams I plan on using in the ToonCon demo game - along with the Drukhari and the Genestealers above.

MORE Moon Base Klaisus - STC -Ryza Pattern Ruins

I finished up the STC-Ryza Pattern Ruins that came with the Moon Base Klaisus box set.

These are all the wall bits that came with the boxed set. The was also a crate with the  Inquisition symbol on it (who knows what they could be storing in there) and trapdoor/access hatch (which, I have just realized, I haven't yet painted... so this isn't TOTALLY done!?)

I tried to do them in buildings sets with separate colours - for a little variety.

As I was setting this out on the kitchen table to take pics (too big to set up outside in the better light...) Finnegan noted that there probably ought to be rubble as there weren't many weapons that would destroy walls, but leave no detritus behind... I agreed, but pointed out GW was probably trying to find a balance between "realism" and "playability" (and cost!).

I figure this represents the remaining terrain that matters in the game - the stuff that gives real cover (although, arguably, piles of rubble could also give cover) but to model all that would make the set very expansive and require a much bigger box and make it difficult to maneuver models over it. We're not building a diorama here - just trying to play a GAME!

I do like these ruins. There is a lot of little details on the wall that fell somewhere between "fun" and "annoying" to paint... Maybe closer to "annoying", but I think they look pretty sharp now that they're finally done. Not that you can see a lot of it in these pictures, due to the crap lighting... but trust me, it's there...

This is the entire Moon Base Klaisus board with all the STC-Ryza Pattern Ruins I have. the full board is  5'5" × 3'7" (a little less than the "standard" 6'x4' table size). The ruins I have on the board here is the walls that came with the set PLUS an additional box of STC-Ryza Pattern Ruins - and it STILL doesn't really cover the entire board with much terrain. I could probably do with a second set of Ryza Patter Ruins...

For now, however, there is plenty to set up a 4-player board for Kill Team (which only uses half of the Moon Base Klaisus board -which is conveniently made out of four smaller boards that are butted together to make the larger board - each board is about 32.5" x 21.5" - about the same size as a Kill Team board). Especially when I throw in some Sector Mechanicus Terrain and some Sector Munitorum Terrain.

Looks like there will be lots of room for everyone to maneuver a round in... and lots of bits of terrain to hide in!

Which will suck for the more shooty teams that would rather stay OUT of close combat... like my Tallarn!

All of the terrain here is GW terrain.

Now to actually PLAY SOME GAMES!!!

I tried to arrange a few games this past week. But they all sort of fell through... which has been a bit of a drag...

Maybe this weekend.

I still have a pile of Sector Mechanicus and Sector Imperialis terrain to paint up! I also have a bit more Munitorum terrain to assemble and paint - a could more galvanic servo haulers, two more shipping containers and a PILE of crates and boxes.

As this is enough terrain for the game I'm running at ToonCon in two weeks (TWO WEEKS!), I need to shift gears and finish up the Kill Teams I wanted to have. Oh, I could run the game tomorrow with Kill Teams I CURRENTLY have, but there are a couple of different ones I'd LIKE to have available to play with. My plan it to take Drukhari (assuming Amanda will let me use HER Kill Team!), Genestealers, Chaos Space Marines and Cultists, and Aseptus Mechanicus. The Drukhari are done. The Genestealers are almost done (I just have to finish their bases). Chaos... well... One is done and the other dozen or so have a bit of paint on them... The Adeptus Mechanicus are assembled and primed...

Coming Soon To Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

Game Reports...? I feel like I've been promising that all month, yet none have materialized!? We are clearly doing too many other things! Seriously, if I have to solo a game or two this weekend, I guess that's what I'll have to do!!

Genestealers! I bought the Kill Team: the Writhing Shadow box set - the Tyranids starter box - a couple weeks ago. I decided it would be a good Kill Team to have as a loaner and use for the ToonCon game - it only comes with Genestealers so it's only ONE troop type to have to worry about and there isn't much variation at all between them - other than the specialist abilities. I know, I know... I could have use the Space Hulk Genestealers... In fact, I've painted these new ones to match the ones I already painted so they could be used together. I even used the same 32mm Necromunda bases. I picked up the box set to get the cards and a little bit more terrain... because I apparently didn't have enough Sector Munitorum Terrain. They are assembled and the genestealers are painted - I just have to finish up the bases... probably do that some time today...

Drukhari Kill Team

I took a bit of a break from painting terrain to finish up this Drukhari kill team Amanda wanted me to paint for her. I'd hoped to post these Sunday, but when I went to help her write out the list Saturday evening and come up with names and stuff and write this post, I realized I'd only painted up 88 points worth of stuff!? So, that night I quickly assembled and yesterday painted up a couple more to bring it over 100 points (and give her some extras she could put on her roster and swap out for... something...?). At some point I should probably paint up a few more kabalite warriors to give her more shooty options, but for the time being this should get her going and most of our games, so far, have denigrated into mid-zone melees, which the Wyches should excel at!

(We have a whole ARMY of Drukhari that Amanda's expecting me to paint up for her at some point!? Yikes! Hope she's happy with these for the time being!)

Kill Team Crimson Wave

Kill Team Crimson Wave are Ascendant Murderers; having risen from the ganglands of the Dark City, they members of this Kill Team now have much greater ambitions. Currently they are raiding real space as part of a Harvest - collecting samples of flesh from the lesser races. The Crimson Wave are reckless - regardless of the mission, the members of this Kill Team have their own hedonistic agendas to pursue.

(Inspiration for the Kill Team's name came from the song Crimson Wave, which we heard at a recent local Burlesque show).

The Team consists of:

Vulvatrix of the Crimson Wave - Wych Cult Hekatrix - Leader - Blast Pistol and Agonizer - 13 points
Vulvatrix is Unforgiving, she strives for perfection, and accepts nothing less from those whom she fights.

Wych Fighters Khatryx Veluxis, Kladys Vaganix, and Peiythia Labiyx

Khatryx Veluxis - Wych Fighter - Zealot Specialist - Razorflails - 11 points
Khatryx has a Darkened Soul - Over long centuries Khatryx had enacted countless atrocities and is now only rarely amused by them.

Kladys Vaganix - Wych Fighter - Combat Specialist - Hydra Gauntlets - 11 points
Gladys is Extravagant - she had developed a taste for finery, and ruthlessly pursues the fulfilment of her desires.

Peiythia Labiyx - Wych Fighter - Shardnet and Impaler - 11 points

Wyches Asphyxa Noiyr, Vaivel Wysp, Klitrix Slythk, and Adalyx Bloodslyk

Asphyxa Noiyr- Wych - Splinter Pistol and Hekatari Blade - 8 points
Vaivel Wysp - Wych - Splinter Pistol and Hekatari Blade - 8 points
Klitlyx Slythk - Wych - Splinter Pistol and Hekatari Blade - 8 points
Adalyx Bloodslyk - Wych - Splinter Pistol and Hekatari Blade - 8 points

Kabalite Warriors Saphisykh Vhrex and Draeven Starr

Saphisykh Vhrex - Kabalite Warrior - Splinter Rifle - 7 points
Draeven Starr - Kabalite Warrior - Splinter Rifle - 7 points

Thrixxesh Xosh - Kabalite Gunner - Sniper Specialist -  Dark Lance - 12 points
Thrixxesh has a Predator's Eye - No detail is too small to escape the attention of Thrixxesh.

Because Amanda has a hard time telling one from another, I originally had done them in a variety of hair colours (usually, I think, wych cults tend to dye their hair all the same colour) but to further help her in identifying them, I painted their names on the backs of the bases.

The total for these (so far): 104 points - so one of these will have to be left behind to watch the Raider they flew in on. If we kick off a campaign it would probably one of the Wyches left behind. Both Kabalite warriors would have to be fielded for their "fire team" to gain experience.

As I mentioned earlier I should probably paint up a few more Kabalite Warriors for some more shooty options, including a second Kabalite gunner - maybe with a Blaster or a Shredder. Not sure what else to add... Kabalite Warriors and Wyches are the only options for Drukhari Kill Teams... so far... I'll bet there will be rules for a Succubus in Kill Team: Commanders. But we'll have to wait until that comes out to know for sure...

Amanda did say once I finished these she would play a game with me, every day, for a week... so hopefully these will see some action this week!

I've had a bit more of a look through Rogue Trader and I'm pretty excited to play with that - but I'm feeling like I need to get some more stuff done for ToonCon before I can really sink my teeth into that... Having read through most of it, the only disappointment I have with it is that you can play the Elucidian Starstriders as a Kill Team - which consists of Elucia Vhane (the Rogue Trader) and her super special specialists and crew and such... but there isn't a list for generic Rogue Traders... I mean, I suppose you could use other Rogue Trader-like figures and play with it "As Elucia Vhane" and stuff... but it's not the same as making up your own from a more generic list. And there isn't really a LOT of choices in the stuff you can have with it... I guess you could just make up your own stuff for "open play" or "narrative play" based on stuff in the books.

Admittedly, there really aren't any other Official Rogue Trader figures currently available from GW, and thus why would they include a list for miniature they can't currently sell you? You'd think with Warhammer Quest: Blackrock Fortress coming out, however, which sounds like it will include a different Rogue Trader and his entourage, they might have considered including generic rules for Rogue Traders!?

I am looking forward to Kill Team Commanders - one of the next expansions to come out. I just hope IT includes generic commanders like Imperial Guard Officer or Imperial Guard Commissar and not Lord Castellan Creed or Commissar Yarrick...

The next rumoured expansion after that is supposed to be Kill Team: Inquisitor - which I really hoped they'd do - but I have a feeling it will include NAMED Inquisitors and some opposing names Daemon, rather than generic lists for Inquisitors with options for the different orders...

They seem to have broken from the pattern or releasing starter teams in the order presented in the Kill Team faction focus index and are skipping over the Harlequins - which has irritated The Girl - and are moving on to Necrons and T'au. The Kill Zone coming with it is the Wall of Martyrs - Imperial Defence Line. I expected they'd put out a Kill Zone including these models with a board with loads of craters printed on it... But I think it's a bit weird that they've done in at the same time as the Necrons and T'au... and included section of the Wall of Martyrs - Imperial Defence Line with both of the starter kits - especially when there is T'au specific terrain they COULD have included with the T'au!?

As much as I'd like to pick up this Kill Zone as well, I'm going to have to pass on it for now, and hope it's still available sometime next year when my pocket book recovers from all the previous Kill Team purchases I've made so far this year. And besides, I would still like to pick up Inquisitor and Commanders when they come out (I'm kind of actually hoping they're NOT this year... but I have a feeling that one will come out in October, another in December, and somewhere in between will be Warhammer Quest: Blackrock Fortress, which I am also interested in... oh, and Wrath & Glory, if/when it's ever released as print copies to retail stores....

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

Possibly some Kill Team game reports...? Back to finishing up some terrain...? Another Kill Team...? Hard to say... I've been feeling kind of... bleh... this week. It's been hard to motivate myself to do anything. Output has been down - I know, I STILL get a lot done in a week... but I feel like it's down for me and I'm just going through the motions of getting stuff done and not really enjoying it as much as I usually do...

Moon Base Klaisus - STC -Ryza Pattern Ruins

I finished up a few more of bits of the STC-Ryza Pattern Ruins. These AREN'T the ones that came with Moon Base Kalisus. There were STC-Ryza Pattern Ruins that came with Moon Base Kalisus, but these aren't them. These are from a set I bought separately a couple months ago when Kill Team first came out. The ruins that come with the Moon Base aren't exactly the same either. They are similar... but not all totally the same....

The new ruin bits. Basically identical to the previous section I completed (I posted pictures of them at the end of THIS POST). The only difference is I painted the outer side of the building reddish brown, where as the previous ones were blue.

Same ruin, different angle. The board I've taken pictures of them on are the boards that came with Moon Base Klaisus.

More of the same - but with some of the previously painted blue building ruins (and some T'au).

A few of the building sections that came with Moon Base Klaisus are a bit longer than the ones I've just finished. I'm working on them next. Hopefully I can finish them up in the next week and move on to some new Kill Teams!

Oh, I did finish one of the bits that came with the Moon Base - this Inquisitor's crate/objective marker.

What could be in that crate? And why do these T'au want it so badly?

That's probably one too many... I've run out of things to say about it...

Here is what the entire Moon Base Klaisus board looks together. I had to take the picture of this one inside and spread out on the floor - as I don't currently have a table big enough to set it up on. It's total size is slightly less than 6'x4'. It's made up of four smaller boards, that themselves fold up pretty small. The individual boards are about the same size as the boards that come with Kill Team or in the Kill Zone boxes. I could play one-on-one games of Kill Team on any single board. I could run four-player games of Kill Team with any of the two that match up. Or I can play full-sized games of regular 40K on the full four-board set up.

The boards are printed on both sides - The the other side has a reddish cratered landscape. I'll have to remember to take some pictures of that side next time...

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

Hard to say... probably more painting updates... I haven't gotten in ANY games of Kill Team... or any games at all this week! The September Game-A-Day Challenge seems to have fallen by the wayside. I'm a little sad about that, but willing to let it go. It's been a CrAzY busy month and I didn't want to push it so much that everyone gets SICK of gaming - trying to cram in a game here and there purely to say that we did it. It's supposed to be fun, right?
