Technically, the stuff below aren't really the first purchases of 2026... I bought some stuff on Friday... but that was mail ordered and won't be here until later in the week and I don't really count things that aren't in my grubby little hands yet!
It is BECAUSE of said purchases that I wandered on over to the Dragon's Den and bought the stuff below.
Fenris Workshop had a copy of Warhammer Quest: Cursed City - NEMESIS! The THIRD campaign in the trilogy - long out of print and I'd kind of given up the idea that we'd ever play it as the only copies I'd seen available were hundreds of dollars! The copy Fenris had was still in shrink-wrap and not too unreasonably priced! So I bought it! (and since I was ordering from them, I also picked up a BUNCH of flowery tufts for basing and a small handful of used miniatures).
Luckily, the required miniatures for Nemesis include Varghiests, Dire Wolves, Grave Guard, a Wight King and a Necromancer. I already HAVE Varghiests and Dire Wolves and a Wight King... I just needed a Necromancer and the Grave Guard....
So I picked up the Necromancer and Grave Guard at the Dragon's Den.
I should be able to knock these out pretty quick. I've already started on the Dire Wolves - which is what's distracted me away from the Pestigors. We won't be playing ANY Warhammer Quest until March, anyway, because Amanda is very suddenly off on a little vacation for the latter half of February!
(I guess if I finished up the Pestigors, I COULD just play through the whole campaign with OTHER PEOPLE while she's away!)
(I could probably play through it a FEW times!)
For our Tuesday evenings, however, we'll probably return to play in March with Cursed City Nemesis... and THEN when we're done that Amanda, Finnegan and I will play through Warhammer QuestL Darkwater.
(but, yeah, I might just play it with others - or solo it myself - while she's away!)
This puts me at 22 painted, 11 purchased for the year so far. Another 8 foot and 1 mounted are arriving with the Fenris Order. I'm hoping by the time it arrives I'll have finished either the Pestigors or the Dire Wolves (or maybe BOTH!?) which would be another 18-20 miniatures (depending on whether I can find some of the old beastmen I have squirrelled away to use as stand-in pestigors or not - to make it a full unit of 10!?)
In another couple weeks, the Battleforce: Disciples of Tzeentch – Warpflame Cavalcade will be arriving, which will be adding almost another FORTY miniatures!! It's actually thirty-six little Daemons, an Exalted Flamer (which is big enough I'd classify as "Mounted/Small Beastie") and a Herald of Tzeentch on Burning Chariot and a Lord of Change - Greater Daemon of Tzeentch (both of which would be classified as "Vehicles/Bigger Beasties"). This will bring the total purchased/acquired to 55.
Can I get another 33 x 28mm foot miniatures painted in the next two weeks - to keep me "in the black" in that category at least...? Maybe... Maybe not... Regardless, these graveyard should be pretty quick and easy to knock out, so if I could finish these AND the Pestigors AND the Dire Wolves, I'd be CLOSE - and within the next week or so, I'd be able to finish up a few others bringing the painted back higher than the purchased!!
I am trying really hard to keep from adding too much to the collections this year - and definitely want to keep it lower than the amount I paint. I'd would be nice to paint twice as many as I purchase, but I'm not going to do anything silly like make a proclamation that I will be doing so!

Oh great you found Nemesis!
ReplyDeleteAnd are those the newer grave guard? GW churns through figures so fast these days I have trouble keeping track.
No, these are the recently discontinued Grave Guard that have been replaced by BARROW Guard...
DeleteI don't think core units get replaced all that quickly, do they? I mean until a year or so ago, Eldar were still using finest versions of metal minis from the 90s/00s!? The minis that aren't primarily Age of Sigmar miniatures (Warhammer Quest or Warhammer Underworlds or some Warcry mini) that they just made rules for so that you COULD use them for Age of Sigmar, but they weren't originally intended for Age of Sigmar... those do tend to get rotated out in a year or two...
We'll see about Nemesis... I have to admit, I was tiring of Cursed City and really looking forward to moving on... When I spotted Nemesis I pointed it out to Amanda thinking she'd just say NO, but instead showed excitement and wondered if Finnegan would be keen to play. I was certain he would - I know HE's kind of grown attached to the two remaining heroes he has... and apparently Amanda is too! So I guess we'll give it a go...?
Darkwater can wait... it's not like we're going to be playing it for years and years until the next Warhammer Quest comes out! (Unless GW does something surprising like crank out all sorts of additional content and expansions for it!?)
(Y'know, BEYOND the "Here's four new heroes you can run through the same campaign, they only cost $200..." That's going to wear thin REAL fast!)
How could I possibly get "grave" guard and "barrow" guard mixed up... I guess you are right, GW is not changing core units much faster than they used to, but they are adding units very quickly, some of which seem like the old "core" units either in looks or how they fit into the army.
DeleteNurgle is a recent example, where you go from "paint your generic guys yucky" to "better bigger dudes" to bespoke warriors, heavy warriors of two types, knights, and mortal infantry.
That all the armies and games are doing it at once is what makes it hard to keep up with!
Or you know, getting old.
For Sure - the Nurgle update was a bit much... taking the CORE of most peoples armies - Putrid Blightkings - and completely changing their look and role and a significant part of their stat block, from hard hitting tanks to still relatively hard hitting warrior priests in robes (with armoured pants!?) and then making a new unit that's kind of hard hitting tanks... but larger numbers on smaller bases...
DeleteI think it might be very confusing playing against Nurgle for a bit, because I'm sure half the players are going to continue using their old Putrid Blightkings as Putrid Blightkings (there is NO RULE that says they can't!) they don't quite look the same, but they're bit dudes on 40mm bases in units of five. the other half of Nurgle players are rebasing all their old Putrid Blightkings onto 32mm bases to use as Rotswords... same miniatures... being used as a totally different unit...
I'm sure there will be many complaints about this!
Just to be a weirdo, I'm doing a bit of BOTH!? I have ten Putrid blightkings that are going to go on 32mm bases that I will use as Rotswords and another ten I'm going to keep on 40mm bases to use as Putrid Blightkings! Ha-ha-ha-ha-haaaa!
(five of the ones I'm keeping as Putrid Blightkings are the ones I got with the Spearhead army and because the spearhead army has not changed at all with the changes to the core army in the new Battletome, I will use those blightkings with the Spearhead army, should I ever play that... the ten that I am putting on 32mm bases to use as Rotswords are five that came with the Shudderblight Cyst and another five used ones that I'll be rebasing and repainting anyway... I will try to give as many of them shields as possible. The other five remaining blightkings that I'll probably continue to use as blightkings are the three Blight Templars from Warhammer Quest: Darkwater and Sepsimus and Gulgough from Wurmspat... who all look different enough from all the other Putrid Blightkings, I'm hoping it will be clear what they are if ever fielded along side the old-Blighkings-turned-Rotswords...)
I think there's also a unit in the Flesh-Eater Courts called "Crypt Guard" - which I keep confusing with Barrow Guard...
DeleteAnd here I thought that the old Blightkings were much bigger than the Rotswords!
DeleteThe split with the Flesh-eaters (and ghosts) has lead to all sorts of confusion I am sure.
The old blightkings probably are a touch bigger than the Rotswords... I haven't seen any of the new stuff in person, though, or any decent size comparison pics yet, though, so... I have no idea really!
