September Games - Week Four

Picking up where we left off...

Sunday, 22 September 2019

on Sunday evening Amanda and I played a game of Necromunda. Sunday evenings, in our fall schedule, were to be set aside for a Necromunda Campaign. I had hoped we'd get TWO games in each Sunday evening - and that's all we'd need to do for our campaign... that hasn't happened yet...

We got started a bit late this week as Amanda decided to drag Finnegan out for a canoe paddle in the late afternoon (instead of doing it earlier when Keira and I were out at dance classes...?).

My Delaque gang and her Escher gang fought for control of the Narco Den.

You can read a full report of the game here:

Wenz Pipe - Battle for the Narco Den

Monday, after Ballroom, was supposed to be our "back up" evening for Neromunda - if we didn't get two games played. No one was (well... the kids weren't) feeling up to playing necromunda, so Amanda and I played a quick game of pPatchwork... and then we went and started watching American Gods.

It was, seriously, my BEST GAME EVER!!! I had only four empty spaces and even had buttons left over!!! WOO!

Amanda has a pretty amazing game as well!

Tuesday, 24 September 2019

Tuesday evening, Finnegan has his regular, fortnightly D&D game.

Amanda, Keira and I played a quick game of Retro Lunacy. Keira won.

Wednesday, 25 September 2019

Wednesday evening we all played a quick game of SET. Finnegan won this one - taking TEN sets. Keira and I weren't THAT far behind with seven and six, respectively... This just isn't Amanda's game... though she did collect two sets - which is pretty good, for her!

Thursday, 26 September 2019

Thursday Morning Bruce stopped by to play a few games. I'd invited him over to play 7 Wonders Duel, as I thought it would be a game he and his wife might enjoy, but it turns out he's apparently never played regular 7 Wonders... so we had to start with that. I recruited Finnegan to join us.

After that I played a couple rounds of 7 Wonders Duel with just Bruce. He did like it enough that we played two games and he borrowed it to take home and play with Adele.

The second game we played was one of my highest scoring games EVER - all this yellow cards!!

All the games were still pretty close - considering Bruce had never played either!

Friday, 27 September 2019

Friday evening we played a (relatively) quick game of Race for the Galaxy before watching a few episodes of American Gods.

We played with the Xeno Invasion expansion.

The Xeno Invasion was halted, largely due to my military-industrial complex... and that ended the game. I was a little worried we were all going to be hammered by Amanda who was collecting TWO victory points every turn (to everyone else's single VP) for surviving while having the lowest total military power. I just managed to squeak out a victory - thanks to the high military, I was able to put down a few high-point cards (Xenos forward Command - 9 points, Alien something-something for 8 points!). I ended with 48 points, Amanda and Keira were tied for second with 42.

Saturday, 28 September 2019

Well... I didn't get in a game... but there WAS a game going on at our place that 50% of the family played in!

Seems it was quite the epic adventure!

Sunday, 29 September 2019

Whoopsie... No games were played today.

It was a busy day. Keira and I had Irish Dance classes. Amanda did TWO Thai Yoga Massages, and in the evening Amanda and I went out to Glory - a play at the Persephone Theatre (which was amazing, by the way!)

Falling a little behind in our Necromunda campaign.

Monday, 30 September 2019

Last day of the month - Keira and I sat down for a quick game of Firefly Fluxx

An inauspicious start to the game, pulled a Creeper (REAVERS, no less!) on my initial card pull...

Things went better after I got rid of it. We were confused about one of Keira's cards (firearms) thinking it meant I couldn't STEAL any of her cards - when it actually referred to an ability conferred by a special rule card...

So many times I JUST ABOUT won... Hey look I'm filling that goal! Whoops forgot I had a creeper off to the side.

Eventually I got rid of the creeper and won the game. It was a longer game - actually went through the full deck once and had to shuffle the discards!

Well... that was quite a month!

The September 2019 Game-A-Day Challenge

Pretty close... Two of those Saturdays that are blank are days that I didn't play games, but there WERE games going on that 50% of the family played in (Finnegan's D&D 5E game), so I'd count them as "Game Days". The 19th and 29th were the only days where no games were played... but missing two days out of thirty... not bad... that's 28 days that we (at least SOME of us) DID play games! So that's definitely a win in my books!

The 'Family' 10x10 Challenge

A few games were checked off this month - Splendor, Century: Golem Edition, and Race for the Galaxy... Not quite the eight games a month we needed to play (every month) to complete this challenge - let along the 10-12 we'd have needed to do to catch up... Ah, well... as long as we're still having fun, right?!

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

ummm.... not sure...

hopefully I'll be posting drawings for Inktober over on my Art Blog... or Instagram... or maybe Twitter...? Check those out later today or tomorrow.

September Games - Week Three

Carrying on into the third week of my September Game-A-Day Challenge 2019...

Sunday, 15 September 2019

Finnegan and I  got in another game in our Necromunda campaign. I had a terrible night and very little sleep so bailed on my own Sunday afternoon Dance class, and Amanda ended up taking Keira to hers - while they were out, Finnegan and I set up and played a game.

You can check out the full report here:

The Pit

Later in the evening, after the Grrrlz got home and had had supper, we watched more of Stranger Things, Season Two...

Monday, 16 September 2019

Monday evening, Amanda and I have a Ballroom Dance class that we are now attending... unfortunately this Monday we were out late at an appointment with Finnegan and weren't back in time to go out to that. We had thought after Ballroom Amanda and Keira could get in their game of Necromunda, but by the time we were home and had had supper, no one was really interested in a more involved game of Necromunda...

So Amanda and I had a quick game of 7 Wonders Duel...

It was a weird game, I very nearly won with Military power. Amanda ran away with science, but I mostly ignored it, thinking I was so far ahead in so many other things that she couldn't possibly get enough points out of it - and we were both under the impression that you had to have almost all of the PAIRs to win with science. As it turns out you can win with science as long as you have six (I think) different science symbols - which she totally DID have!! So Amanda won with SCIENCE for once! Woo!

I had filled out a score card as we'd gotten to the end of the game, and then I had this sneaking suspicion that maybe it wasn't pairs she'd needed and thought I'd double check the rules... so she should have ended the game a few turns earlier when she picked up her sixth science card.

Afterwards we watched MORE of Stranger Things, Season Two, and finished it off...

Tuesday, 17 September 2019

After I got home from taking Keira to dance classes (and we were waiting for Anand to get home from HER dance class) I talked Keira into playing a game with me!

We played Eco Flux (now called Nature Fluxx?) - which was a lot of fun. I haven't played a FLuxx game for some time. It was pretty tense - there were a few times both of us were about to win, only to be thwarted (either on purpose or by chance) by our opponent.

In the end I won. Keira played a Goal (Clouds) that I just happened to have both of the Keepers for (Air and Water)!?

When Amanda got home we started in on How I Met Your Mother Season Nine. There were FOUR TV series waiting for me when I did my library run last Saturday! Luckily they've changed their borrowing policy and they now loan TV series and other multi disc sets out for TWO weeks, instead of just ONE! Still - it's a LOT of TV watching to get through all of this - even in two weeks!)

Wednesday, 18 September 2019

After getting home from Keira's WEDNESDAY dance class, we played a game of Splendor - it was fun to play as we hadn't played in a while. It's rare that I've played with less than four and I think this is the first game I've played with just TWO. It was an interesting game as there was less people to potentially mess with your plans (by taking the card you wanted before it was your turn again) but you're also playing with much fewer gems... so you really have to build up a stock of the cheap ones to afford the bigger ones that give you points - something Amanda often just ignores and collects up and hoards piles and piles of gems of ONE COLOUR until she gets the things she wants - and somehow she WINS with this strategy!?

I ended up winning this game. It was more luck than anything - about half way through the game there just happened to be a bunch of easy cards I was jut able to pick up with the cards I already had in play - like for four or five turns in a row! Those allowed me to pick up the merchants - or collect up a few higher points cards... and that was it... ended the game with 17 points!

Afterwards we watched a few more episodes of  How I Met Your Mother Season Nine. After Amanda went to bed, I stayed up and watched the first four or five episodes of Jack Ryan - one of the other series I picked up from the library. It was pretty good. Reminded me a bit of Homeland... which I also liked. I also like the few Tom Clancy books I read, back in the day - so it was fun to see this modern adaptation of classic characters.

Thursday, 19 September 2019

Whoopsie... totally forgot to play a game today...

It was a long day... orthodontist visits, sore mouths, another appointment with Finnegan and a diagnosis (which was, at this point, just a confirmation of what we already suspected, but will hopefully mean we will now be able to access resources and programs that will help the fellow out!)

Amanda also had more dance classes (a tap class that she took, followed by a yoga dance class that she taught). When she finally got home we watched a few more episodes of How I Met Your Mother Season Nine and then I finished off Jack Ryan Season One.

Friday, 20 September 2019

Another late night... and a quick game of patchwork with Amanda (before watching a few MORE episodes of How I Met Your Mother!)

I thought I was doing so well getting the board filed out and even scored the bonus for filling in a 7x7 area... but I just could not get enough buttons! counting up buttons and then subtracting the penalty for unfilled areas I ended up with -7!? Amanda was +6, so, she totally won! (Of course before we were even half way through the game she was moaning about how well I was doing and how I had it "in the bag!")

Saturday, 21 September 2019

Saturday afternoon, Finnegan ran his regular D&D game. Almost a full house this week... only one girl was missing!

Later in the evening Keira ran a game of the Song of Ice and Fire RPG for the family!

Part of Keira's homeschool Language Arts program was to READ a half dozen of these role-playing games she's collected up over the years and regularly hinted at wanting to run, but never actually got to. The idea is for her to READ them - which is, y'know, READING - but not JUST reading - it's very TECHNICAL reading - reading that she has to do and comprehend well enough that she can later EXPLAIN said rules and run a game with players that totally don't know those rules. Also requires presentation ability and the ability to focus a discussion and creative ability to describe situations and people and... and... Yeah, I'm still high-fiving myself over this one...

I played Nicholas Rivers a bastard of the Riverlands... I decided he was a recent convert to the Lord of Light...

It was a very quick game of three short encounters - to basically learn the rules of the game. They seemed easy enough.

The deal was to run at least a one-shot adventure, but if she was SUPER STOKED about the system or setting, she could just carry right on running games for us. I think she's going to take a break from this one (though said she liked it enough she might come back to it...),  but wants to move one and run a game of Epyllion - a game where you role-play youthful dragons!!?

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

Hopefully this evening we'll get some Necromunda games in and I'll post reports of those early in the week.

I also have a bunch of Epic Marines I finished up and will post pics of the entire force so far...

September Games - Week Two

Still doing pretty good on the SECOND week of my September Game-A-Day Challenge...

Sunday, 8 September 2019

We started our long anticipated Necromunda Dominion Campaign this evening!

There is some background and details of the starting gangs and territories here:

The Bronze Gates Campaign (A Necromunda Dominion Campaign)

It was a short and brutal fight that ended with the leaders of the two gangs in a vicious melee together!

Full details of the game can be found here:

Encounter a Fahr's Pipe

Monday, 9 September 2019

On Monday Evening, Keira and I then played our first game.

It did not go well for the One-Eyed Red Snakes (my House Delaque gang)...

Full details of the game can be found here:

Battle at Bilton's Corner

Tuesday, 10 September 2019

Keira humoured me with a super quick game of Retro Lunacy after her dance classes.

I won.

and then I went to bed... not feeling really well - but I got in my game for the day!!

Wednesday, 11 September 2019

One Wednesday we tried out Twilight Squabble. Keira bought this when it came out a couple years ago. I'm not sure why...? She hasn't seemed particularly motivated to read the rules and figure out how to play. So, I finally sat down and ran us through a game (the card pack hadn't even been opened - it was still in plastic!?).

We tied in the balance of power, but I was just ahead in the space race - so I won!

Thursday, 12 September 2019

Thursday evening Amanda and Keira played Century Golem Edition with me.

Our starting market - so many men generating cards! And a victory card that's 20 and all pink... and everything else was green and yellow!? So Weird.

Been a while since Keira's played, she said she'd forgotten how fun it was. Hopefully this will mean she'll be interested in playing it more often..?

I squeaked out a win, but just barely. 78 points. Amanda had 73.

Friday, 13 September 2019

Friday we played Mysterium. Originally we though we'd have seven, but then two bailed and it was just us and Laura - which was fine. Everyone figured out who their suspects were with a turn to two to go... Finnegan guessed who the murder was... but he was the only one... Ah, well...

Saturday, 14 September 2019

Finnegan did run his D&D 5E game in the afternoon... They actually finished up the adventure, levelled up (to third level already!) and then played a funnel adventure for Dungeon Crawl Classics...

And in the evening....? Well, I picked up Stranger Things Season Two on DVD from the library (Yes, we have not seen Season Two - or Three!! - yet. Amanda won't let us get Netflix because she says we'll never get ANYTHING done if we do... she's probably not wrong... so we have to wait for things to be released on DVD...) So we started watching that and I didn't get to play any games. But there WAS a game on Saturday, at our house, that half the family played it... so I'm counting it as a successful week!

More games in our Necromunda campaign!
