The Battle for Boglen Wood – Round Five

Here, finally, is the final round of our Song of Blades and Heroes  Campaign….

We had originally planned to play a “Short Campaign” of six games – after this – our fifth round – we all decided to pack it in. We’d done what we’d set out to do – try out the system and see if it worked – and it did… and everyone liked it… but at this point it was pretty much a forgone conclusion who was coming out on top and the kids were tired of their warbands and wanting to start afresh with something new…

These games were played almost two weeks ago now and so while I do have the pictures I didn’t take a lot of notes or anything and the memory is getting abit hazy. So I’m not entirely sure how some things went down (should have done this earlier when it was all still fresh in my mind!). I’m not 100% sure the forces listed are exactly what was played with… but hopefully it’s pretty close.

GAME ONE

Finnegan played against Amanda.

FORCES

Champions of Lagozed (Finnegan)
1 Campaign Point, Retain the Initiative

Lizard Man Champion
82 points, Q 2+, C 4, Amphibious, Tailslap, Tough, XP3

Lizardman Warrior #1
52 points, Q 3+, C 5, Amphibious, Tailslap, XP3

Lizardman Warrior #2
52 points, Q 2+, C 4, Amphibious, Tailslap, XP3

Lizardman Warrior #3
52 points, Q 2+, C 4, Amphibious, Tailslap, XP 3

Lizardman Warrior #4
52 points, Q 3+, C 4, Amphibious, Tailslap, XP 2

Lizardman Warrior #5
52 points, Q 3+, C 4, Amphibious, Tailslap, XP 0

Total 342 points

The Elves of Bolgen Wood (Amanda)
1 Campaign Point, Tough as Nails

Elf Elite Archer Leader
100 Points, Q 2+, C3, Shooter (Long), Unerring Aim, Leader

Elf Elite Archer
70 Points, Q 2+, C3, Shooter (Long), Unerring Aim, Good Shot

Elf Elite Archer
70 Points, Q 2+, C3, Shooter (Long), Unerring Aim, Good Shot

Elf Archer
55 Points, Q 2+, C3, Shooter (Long)

Total 295 points

THE GAME

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

Finnegan’s lizards charging across the battlefield as fast as they can – to close with the Elves before they are murdered by their vicious bow-fire.

A brief regrouping – so no one goes in alone and gets surrounded and squashed.

Once lizard had to (briefly) got to ground to avoid incoming missile fire!

Moving up, still taking fire – but most of the arrows were simply bouncing of the lizards hard scales.

Another Lizard staggered and the Elves start trying to shift their position to keep their distance from the Lizards.

But they didn’t shift quick enough of far enough and the Lizards were soon upon them!

Once they were in combat it was bad news for the Elves. The lizards had the numbers and were all higher in Combat ability.

The elves were quickly taken down.

The Elf leader was the last to fall.

We did go through the post game procedure for checking injuries and collecting income and Exploring and such – because at this point, I think, we figured we might play that sixth game.

The Elves leader and regular archer were fine – they simply must have ducked out and faded into the forest. The two elite archers were in a bit of a bad way and would have to mis the next game due to their serious injuries! This would have left her with only TWO figures (and whatever she could hire with her income from this game!?).

Luckily Amanda collected 40 gold for income – which would have allowed her to at least hire a new Elf Warrior. Finnegan only collected 10 gold, but he later came across a temple during his exploration and sacked it for another 10 gold. Amanda found a magic well, which she ignored.

Part of the reason Amanda was completely outclassed in this game was because Finnegan’s lizards had two more games on her fey fold and had improved with experience. Most of them  were Q 2+ and C 4 and Amanda’s were only Q2+ and C 3 – and there were far fewer of them! Another game would have seen Amanda’s surviving Elf archers get to C 4 and that would have made a huge difference.

GAME TWO

I played against Keira.

FORCES

The Explorers (Keira)

Human Leader
 60 points, Q 3+, C 3, Leader, XP 0

Human Wizard’s Apprentice
30 Points, Q 3+, C 1, Magic-User, Spell Scroll, XP 3

Human Elite Archer
50 Points, Q 3+, C3, Shooter (Long), Unerring Aim, XP 3
(Moderate Injury – Q 4+ for this game)

Human Elite Archer
50 Points, Q 3+, C3, Shooter (Long), Unerring Aim, XP 2

Human Elite Archer
50 Points, Q 3+, C3, Shooter (Long), Unerring Aim, XP 2

Human Warrior
30 Points, Q 3+, C3, XP 1

Human Light Infantry - Slinger
28 Points, Q 3+, C2, Shooter (Medium), XP 0

Total 298 points

Baron Phillipe Lapin’s Men-at-Arms (me!)
3 Campaign Points, Tough as Nails, Retain the Initiative, Combat Masters

Baron Phillipe de Lapin - Human Infantry Leader
70 points, Q 2+, C 4, Leader, XP 3

Dame Margrit - Human Blessed Paladin
96 points, Q 3+, C 4, Cleric, Heavy Armour, Paladin, Steadfast, Fearless, XP 0

Gaston - Human Elite Archer
50 Points, Q 2+, C3, Shooter (Long), Unerring Aim, XP 3

Renauld - Human Archer
44 Points, Q 2+, C3, Shooter (Long), XP 3

Jean-Luc - Human Archer
44 Points, Q 2+, C3, Shooter (Long), XP3

Pierre - Human Warrior
30 Points, Q 3+, C4, XP 3

Claude - Human Warrior
30 Points, Q 3+, C4, XP 3

Patrice - Human Warrior
30 Points, Q 3+, C4, XP 2

Louis - Human Warrior
30 Points, Q 3+, C3, XP 2

Francois - Human Warrior
30 Points, Q 3+, C3, XP 1

Total 454 points

THE GAME

Looking at the points alone, it was clear this was going to be retty one-sided. Had we finished our Dungeon bits perhaps I could have played a dungeon raid against her – and let her fill the dugeon with traps and nastiness...? Or perhaps given her a fort to defend…? Well we didn’t do that – we just played the straight-up all-out-battle scenario…

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

The forces of Baron Phillipe charge across the pass to deal with the “bandits” hiding out there.

Keira decided to send her forces around the flank – perhaps trying to isolate and take out my archers and Crossbowmen one at a time… a pretty reasonable tactic.

Unfortunately she blew a activation roll early in her next turn (you can see it in the top corner!)

…and Baron Phillipe’s men were upon them!

There’s really no honour or glory in defeating a seven year old with a force 2/3 the size of your own… but we played the game… She's an incredibly good sport about these things and wouldn't have me offering her any advantage.

Keira’s Warrior Wimyn were defeated again…

Despite having her butt handed to her in, I think, EVERY game of the campaign – she is still keen to play and is already working on her next warband…

I think this was after the first morale test – few left on the table – Keira conceded.

I’d suffered two casualties, but both would be back in it for the next game. I’m not sure how many casualties Keira’d had, the only note I’d made was that her leader had not healed properly and would be permanently -1C – which I think had happened to her in her previous game!?

Keira collected 50 gold – but then lost one to my Theives Guild thieves. I collected 60 gold… plus the one stolen from Keira… plus the five from the Ale House… netting me another 66 gold – If we’d carried on that would have put my warband over 500 points!

During exploration I’d been visited by an Adventurer’s Ghost which begged me to avenge his death. In my next game I could nominate one non-personality character in the opponent’s warband as the ghost’s assailant and if it was killed during the game the character killing it would get one extra experience.

Overall I thought the campaign went very well. We all liked the campaign system and would play it again. I think, however, we might try a turn at playing more of a narrative campaign for our next one.

I would like to play a campaign with some other players - If I could ever get anyone out to play!?

I think building some more terrain would give us a few more options for scenarios.

Coming soon on Tim’s Miniature Wargaming Blog:

Hard to say… One one hand I have a bunch of stuff on the workbench… and a pile of terrain stuff half built… and a bunch of free time I could play some games with…

But I also have some reading I’d like to get done… so…

THE GAME

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

The Elves of Bolgen wood met Baron Phillipe’s men in a mountain pass…

Ugggghhhh…. EVERY GAME!? AT least The Baron went and DIDN’T roll a turn over (for once) and got the Men-at-Arms going with a group order. Dame Margrit got going… But when it game to the archers… it seemed they were busy still stringing their bows or something. These guys are Q2+ now, this shouldn't be happening - I think in Turn Two another one of the Q2+ archers rolled a turn-over - he was the last to go, but still...

First round – the Elves made one of the Men-at-Arms duck for cover!

Amanda was trying to play a quick game because she still had packignto do before heading to Denver in the morning. So simply charged her elves right at me firing at a run!

Feeling a bit outnumbered.

The numbers were telling – everytime I got into combat I was outnumbering the elves.

Down they went…

Some got back up again.

But didn’t’ stay up for long…

The last standing elf fleeing the table…

After the battle the Elves checked their wounded and found the two archers were mosderately wounded (Q 3+ for the next game), but their leader would make a full recovery.

Checking for income the elves collected only 10 Gold. Baron Phillipe’s men, however, brought in 40gold – plus another 5 gold for the Alehouse.

During the Exploration phase the Elves… got lost… probably due to the head injuries… Baron Phillipe’s men stumbled upon a Thieves Den! Strangely he was actually able to recruit them to work for him and now I get to steal d6 gold from my opponent after each game!?

Totally dominating this campaign so far – which was not really my intention… Hard to get people to keep playing games with you if you keep trashing them game after game… Ah well, the campaign is almost over and they all still seem keen enough to play – already planning their NEXT wearbands!. Next time I’ll play Hobbits… or maybe goblinzes...?

GAME TWO

Brother and Sister once again clashed in an epic battle of sibling… er… something-or-other… I'd hoped we'd get this game down while Amanda was away and be ready to rage ahead with Round five on Saturday. Alas, it was not to be. These guys battled it out Saturday evening. Hopefully we'll get to Round Five this evening!

THE GAME

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

The Boy and his Lizards.

The Girl and her band of Warrior Wimyn.

End of The Girls second turn.

On the Lizards’ second turn The Champion and a Lizardman warrior made it into contacts with one of the Elite Archers. Another Lizardman (the newly recruited one) made it into contact with another of the Elite Archers. In neither case did the Lizards have enough actions to actually ATTACK, but they got into contact, which meant two elite archer not shooting at them this turn.

On Keira’s third turn she moved her Wizard’s Apprentice up and transfixed the solitary lizard in contact with the nearest Elite Archer. Tehn moved the Warrior in and took it down with a powerful blow!

The Elite Archers on the hill and the Light Infantry slinger was brought up to pour arrows and stones down on the Lizardman Warrior at the bottom of the hill – but he was only recoiled…

The Humans’ leader ran down the hill to aid the outnumbered Archer, but was of little help – she recoiled from the combat. In the next turn the two Lizardmen still in contact with the archer took her down, then another moved into contact with the humans leader and took her out of the game as well…

Most of the Wimyn Warriors failed morale and ran a bit… At that point Keira decided to throw in the towel and retreated from the battle.

Checking their injured afterwards… Both Finnegan’s Lizardman Warrior and Keira’s Elite archer died! The Human’s leader recovered poorly and ended up with a permanent reduction in Combat.

Finnegan’s warband brought in 40 gold, and Keira’s (claiming the underdog bonus) brought in 60… just enough to replace the Elite Archer she lost… except it won’t have the experience (and the bonus Combat ability the dead one had just gained!)

Exploration turned up little. Finnegan’s Lizards came across a caravan, but they traded even-steven and no one came out with a profit. Keira encountered a roadside shrine and offered a gold piece to the gods… but alas, her prayers went unanswered….

Despite the harsh losses Keira's been facing, I think everyone's been enjoying the Song of Deeds and Glory campaign system so far!

In other news…

We (Amanda and I, not the kids!) finished off watching Game of Thrones Season Three on Friday evening… now we have to wait a year for Season four to be on DVD…

I do have the Audiobook of A Clash of Kings out from the library that I’d started earlier in the week (while Amanda was away) but then stopped to finish up The HBO series. I didn’t get back to it last night either as Season One of True Blood showed up at the library for me… probably won’t get to listening to anymore of the Audiobook this week...

I may have to pick up Fear and Faith sometime soon…

Coming soon on Tim’s Miniature Wargaming Blog:

The next round of the campaign – Amanda’s Elves will battle Finnegan’s Lizards and My Human Men-at-Arms will be battling Keira’s Wimyn Warriors.

Over the weekend, Amanda joined in and we played a few more games of Song of Blades and Heroes for our little campaign.

THE GAME

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

The Girls get ready to face off. Amanda’s only really played on brief game before this and needed a lot of reminding how it all worked…

I swear every game played so far has started with a “turn over”!?

Elves moving up and taking some long distance pot-shots and the humans.

Elves in the woods.

Moving up to coverd locations where they could shoot at the (slowly) approaching humans

Said (slowly) approaching humans.

One of the Humans was taking out with bow fire from the elves… then, for a bit it, bogged down into shooting at each other from cover with very little effect. Combined with having to explain the rules over and over to Amanda. It got a bit late and Amanda decided it would be better to finish the game off in the morning.

So… next morning…

Keira charged her leader into close combat with the Elf leader and was knocked down – another elf rushed up to kick the Human while she was down…

Human leader was taken out and most of the others fled. A bit..

“RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY!”

Both the girls still in their pyjamas… I’m not sure why Amanda’s wearing a toque indoors, it wasn’t really THAT cold in the morning…

Another was taken out and combined with those that fled another morale test was required and saw a few more flee off the table… at that point Keira decided to pack it in…

Checking on those injured it was found that the leader and archer were DEAD!? The other injured Human warrior was seriously injured and would have to miss the next game – leaving Keira with the apprentice wizard and four archers to play with!? Now all those surviving got their 3rd experience point so a bunch increased their Quality or Combat stats – but that won’t nearly make up for these terrible losses. I think this has been our bloodiest game yet!

To make matters worse Keira only collected 5 gold in income!? I’m not sure how that worked, I think she would have been entitled to the “Underdog Bonus” Amanda only collected 10 gold – also not helping her to catch up with the rest of us.

During Exploration Amanda found a Magic Well – and chose to pass it by… Keira found a Forgotten Keg and decided to sell it for one more gold.

As I mentioned Keira increased the Quality or Combat stats of her surviving member and then hired a new Human Leader and a Human Light Infantry (Amazon slinger).

GAME TWO

THE GAME

PIC01 THE GAME

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

Again the Baron found himself defending a camp near the river.

Once again I started the first round with a “Turn-over” but made use of my new “Retain the Initiative” warband ability to ignore it and rage ahead…

By the end of my first turn the Men-at-Arms were defending the riverbank! The Archers were moving up on the flanks and getting ready to cover the approaches.

All of this, I realized, was silly as the Lizard men are amphibious and could cross the river ANYWHERE without any trouble…

Turn Two… Seriously…? SERIOUSLY!?! WTF is THIS crap!?

Ah well… we’ll let them come to us…

Finnegan seemed to think flanking around the edge of the woods was a better idea than charging straight into the halberds of the Men-at-Arms. Not a bad plan…

So I redeployed my Men-at-Arms to be ready for them wherever they crossed.

Harassing them with fore from my archer and crossbowmen… not that it did much against their scaly hides.

In the end they crossed at the ford anyway – mostly so the bugbear wouldn’t have any troubles.

My elite archer took down the bugbear. After our last battle – and discovering that models taken out on the field of battle don’t necessarily DIE there was 100% less tears when this happened. I pointed out all we know at this point was that the bug bear was hit by arrows and fell down in the river with a big splash and took no further part in the battle… could be injured… could just have decided not to take any further part…

Somehow my shooting got better – at point blank range – and we knocked down and pushed back various lizards at different points.

Finally we took out another one and Finnegan decided charging his remaining three into battle with my NINE would probably not go well for him, the rest of his lizards fropped down into the stream and swam off…

As it turns out that Arrow hit the Bugbear in the neck and he bled out in the river and died… but Finnegan took it rather well. The Lizard that fell in battle made a full recovery.

I took in 20 gold (plus five for my Ale House that I acquired last game!) and Finnegan brought in 40 gold (having claimed the Underdog Bonus)!?

During exploration Finnegan’s leader got an illness, but took some herbal remedy and shook it off… In my own wanderings I came across a Blessed Paladin and she joined out band of warriors!?

Coming soon on Tim’s Miniature Wargaming Blog:

The next round of the campaign – Amanda and I will pair off and Finnegan and Keira will face each other again.
