Age of Sigmar: Stormcast Eternals

I don't really CARE for the Stormcast Eternals... They're like the Space Marines in 40K. Soulless executors of the God-Kings/Emperor's will. Kind of Fascists, really...

How did I end up with an ARMY of them...

Well...

It all started with Warhammer Underworlds?! As I kind of collected up Warbands for that game, I kind of just ended up with a pile of Stormcast Eternals... because they just keep making Stormcast Eternal warbands in EVERY edition... enough of them that they make up a small force in Age of Sigmar. When Third Edition was released, Finnegan and I played a small Paths to Glory campaign, ans one of the forces we used was Stormcast Eternals made up of Warhammer Underworlds warbands!?

And then Fourth Edition happened... and initially I pre-ordered the Skaventide box thinking I'd KEEP the Rules and boards and cards and terrain and just sell off ALL THE MINIATURES... but then I PLAYED a game of Spearhead at the Warhammer Store WITH the Stormcast Eternals Spearhead force... and got to thinking... Maybe I could keep these...? They'll be easy enough to paint... They kind of kick ass...

Also, they could also be called upon for use in Warhammer, Age of Sigmar: Soulbound (the role-playing game). The player characters are almost always Soulbound servants of the Gods of Order... they can even PLAY Stormcast Eternals - which can't be Soulbound, themselves, but often accompany groups of Soulbound.

The Warhammer Underworlds warbands are all painted as members of the Hammers of Sigmar Stormhost, so far... just because That's what the characters were in Warhammer Underworlds. Hammers of Sigmar are sort of the default force of Stormcast - just like the Ultramarines in 40K. They have a close association with the city of Hammerhal (which features heavily in Warhammer Quest and Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soulbound).

I have to admit, I'm a little bored of the Hammers of Sigmar, though, so I decided that all the new ones I'm painting are going to be from the Anvils of Heldenhammer. I mostly picked those because I liked the look of their black armour that was a stark contrast to the more typical golden sigmarite of the Hammers of Sigmar (which is how I've painted all the other Stormcast Eternals I've painted for Warhammer Underworlds!). I had NO IDEA about their background fluff!?

All Stormcast Eternals were once brave mortal humans that were loyal to Sigmar whose souls were plucked away from Nagash at the moment of their death - often in battle - and reforged into nigh immortal Stormcast on the Anvil of Apotheosis... The Anvils of Heldenhammer are a little different... They were built using souls of long dead heroes from the Age of Myth. They tend to be a dour brooding lot that speak in an archaic manner!?

PAINTED ANVILS OF HELDENHAMMER

Heroes

Knight-Questor

Units

(none to show just yet!)

PAINTED HAMMERS OF SIGMAR

What I have painted so far...

It was enough for a starting Paths to Glory force in 3rd Edition... Not-so-much now...

Heroes

(none to show just yet!)

(Though Averon Stormsire is a Knight-Incantor!? In the previous editions, if you took Warhammer Underworlds warbands that included characters that would be Heroes... they WERE Heroes, and the rest of the warband just came along as a companion unit... Now that all the Warhammer Underworlds warbands have been moved to "Legends" they've streamlined and simplified further and made them all regular Units, regardless of what is IN the unit... So without a Hero to lead them, these would all have to be fielded as Auxiliary units!?)

Units

Castigators - These are actually the Storm of Celestus (a Warhammer Underworlds warband - the warband includes Sleek the Gryph-Hound, but is not included in a Castigators unit...?)

Steelheart’s Champions

Stormsire’s Cursebreakers

Averson Stormsire is a hero... in a way. In the previous edition he could be taken as a Knight-Incantor hero and just happened to have two Evocator attendants...

In 4th Edition all these have moved on into legends, streamlined and simplified... Which is a bit of a shame. He could ditch his two Evocator attendants and still be fielded as a Knight-Incantor...?

Xandire’s Truthseekers

Ironsoul's Condemnors

Odd these don't show up in the lists at all... I wondered if Sequitors came in units of three... but they do not, only units of five... so... why have these been left out!?

STILL TO DO

This is what I have still to do (all of which will be Anvils of Heldenhammer):

  • Lord-Terminos (1)
  • Lord-Veritant (1+1)
  • Lord-Vigilant on Gryph-stalker (1)
  • Liberators (5)
  • Liberators (5)
  • Prosecutors (3)
  • Reclusians (3)
  • Castigators (3)
  • Lord-Imperatant (1)
  • Lord-Imperatant's Gryph-hound (1)
  • Praetors (3)
  • Vindictors (5)
Things that I still have to paint that I will still paint as Hammers of Sigmar:
  • Domitan’s Stormcoven (3)

Currently the PRIORITY for painting is the stuff necessary for a Spearhead force... and maybe Domitan's Stormcoven, so I can play them in Warhammer Underworlds.

Will I ever paint ALL of these...? Unclear. Probably not. I might even consider getting rid of the things that I DON'T need for Spearhead...

Or, I might paint them up as a different Stormhost...?

Some of those still to do...

Domitan's Stormcoven

They are so close... Like, soooooooo close... every day I wonder; why can't i JUST FINISH THEM!?

More Castigators (or a second Storm of Celestus)

Bonus Steelhearts Champions - or some bonus Liberators... I guess...

THE PLAN

There really ISN'T much of a plan... I don't really care to have a whole ARMY of Stormcast.

I'll paint up the Spearhead force, just to have a spare someone can borrow (because they should be quick and easy).

I'll continue painting stuff for Warhammer Underworlds.

Maaaaybe if Finnegan or Amanda were to suddenly show interest in playing in a Paths to Glory campaign and for some reason wanted to play Stormcast... I could paint whatever extras I have left over from the Skaventide Box...

Or maybe I'll sell off the spares...?

I did for funsies try to figure out if I could fit ALL THE THINGS into a force and how many points that force would be... turns out, I have pretty close to 2000 points, if I use ALL the stuff from Skaventide and ALL the Warhammer Underworlds warbands (except Ironsoul's Condemnors - which they have not released a battle profile for?!) and I only use Averon Stormsire, from of Stormsire's Cursbreakers, as a Knight-Incantor (which he is!)

I mean, I have no intention of playing Matched Play... so... do I NEED 2000 points worth of Anvils of Heldenhammer!? NOPE! But this would make a great force to start at 1000 points for Paths to Glory - and have the potential to expand to 1620...

Where would I start with for a 1000 point Paths to Glory army...?

STUFF TO GET

I really don't feel ANY need to get anything else for this...

Maybe Neave Blacktalon (and friends?)? I've listened to Neave Blacktalon: First Mark, and it was kind of fun and she's a member of the Hammers of Sigmar... I have some of those already with all the Warhammer Underworlds stuff... so, I could see myself picking up that box, maybe... some day...
