Free RPG Day

Despite pouring rain, I rode my bicycle over to my FLGS - Dragon's Den Games - for Free RPG Day (Role-Playing Games! Not Rocket Propelled Grenades!). The kids and I used to go every year, it was great fun... but I feel like I haven't for a few years. It was cancelled in 2020, I think... another year the Den just never got their box. Another year I don't think they participated. Maybe I did go a couple years ago...? Free League might have had a Blade Runner quick-start or something...? The kids haven't gone with me since before the pandemic. Finnegan works on Saturdays now, and Morgan just isn't into role-playing games anymore...

This year I picked up a deck of free cards from some world building system...?

Ah, there are instructions on the tabs of this incredibly hard to open box...

Different types of cards...

Information on the cards...

Oh... I guess if I'd opened the box/sleeve the RIGHT way, it would have been EASIER and I would have found all the instructions!? DOH!

I don't know... seems like the same could be accomplished with a few random tables and a pair of percentile dice... but I get it, it is fun to just flip cards and not have to look shit up on a table in a book...

Did anyone else go out and pick up something for Free RPG Day? What did you get!? Let me know in the comments!

Possessed Heretic Astartes

A random single figure rolling off the painting desk that doesn't really fit in with anything else I'll be posting any time soon...

Possessed Heretic Astartes

I have not come up with a name for him yet...

Not sure when or how I will ever make use of him...

He has a brother, Lorgag, which I finished ages ago.

Lorgag led a small band of Chaos Space marines, back when the leader of a Generic Chaos Space Marine squad could be led by a champion sporting a Chain Axe... And, maybe Generic Chaos Space Marines still can...? But not-so-much the Emperor's Children.

So I probably won't find much use for him in 40K... but there's always Wrath & Glory (which I've been thinking a lot about again, lately, and has no such limitations!)

Warhammer Quest: Cursed City - Session Twenty-Three - Scavenge Journey

As with the previous game report, this game was played almost a month ago at the end of May, when things finally got a little less crazy in our household... Still, we only got in two games in all of May!? Things have settled down now and we're mostly back to playing weekly games...

Mostly...

We could have played through the next Decapitation Journey, but Finnegan had a PLAN to do another Scavenge Journey, to try and gather up enough Realmstone to get a specific enhancement (or two) before taking on the Ven Alten cousins...

In this game, Amanda played Qlathis the Exile and Glaurio ven Alten III and Finnegan played Dagnai Holdenstock and Brutogg Corpse-Eater.

Strangely, the map I rolled on the random table was the Ven Alten Estates! So they went and scouted out the estate... and then robbed the Ven Altens, before going back to kill them with their own Realmstone after it has be wrought into vampire-killing weapons!?

There were three Vyrkos Blood-Born vampires there to greet the invading hunters... They ven Altens!?

Brutogg smashed one of them apart... it is a wonder how those Phylacteries put them back together...

Glaurio then blasted one of this cousins with his pistols...

Brutogg bludgeoned his way past the third, stunning it, before it was finished off...

Dagnai had been holding off a horde of rats at a door opposite the rest of the Heroes.

He worked his way into the room, killing as many as he could before running off to start collecting treasure! This was, after all, a Scavenge Journey!

Qualthis and Glaurio finished up the rest.

The alarm raised by the Ven Altens brought a squad of the Ulfenwatch, who caught Dagnai looting the residence!

"YOU'LL NEVER CATCH ME, COPPERS!" Dagnai shouted as he fled with the goods... and then found MORE stuff to steal...

It was left to Brutogg, Glaruio, and Qulathis to deal with "The Fuzz" and more bats and rats...

Dagnai just kept looting the place...

More of the Ulfenwatch arrived and chased Dagnai.. While Brutogg and the others were still dealing with the first patrol!?

And then a Vargskyr showed up!?

A patrol of the Ulfenwatch finally caught up with Dagnai... He tried to distract them by shouting "LOOK! DONUTS!"

And then ran off the other way...

Looting one bookshelf...

Then another...

These Ven Altens were LOADED...

So much stuff to steal!

The commotion eventually drew the attention of the ruler of Ulfenkarn himself... Radukar the Wolf...

Glaurio fell back behild their mountain of a meat-shield...

Brutogg pounded on the ancient vampire, while Glaurio took shots with his pistols.

Qulathis even took a few shots to help take the beast down!

Then took some shots at a Ven Alten vampire that tried to ambush them from behind while they were distracted by The Wolf!

Another of the Ven Altens that had recovered from their wounds attacked.

Brutogg waded into a swarm of bats and zombies to keep them busy while Dagnai finished looting the place.

A Kosargi Nightguard that had been lumbering after his master finally showed up...

It took THREE of the Heroes to take it down...

Just when they figured they're stolen enough, the Ven Alten Triplets showed up AGAIN! They had to be beaten down for the group to escape!

Finally all made it to the Extraction Point and were whisked away on the airship Adamant!

Influence on the rise... might be time for a Hunt Journey (or two)... but AFTER they deal with those Ven Alten vampires for good!

Three more game reports and I'll be caught up... with the Warhammer Quest game reports, at least! There was a game of Bolt Action in April I never got around to doing a game report for... and... at this point.. I think I might just let that go! There will be others!

Warhammer Quest: Cursed City - Session Twenty-Two - Decapitation Journey - Whispers in the Dark

With everyone at Level Three, it was time to go on another Decapitation Journey. At Level Three, there are TWO different Decapitation Journeys that need to be completed, and can be done in any order. The group chose to do Whispers in the Dark - hunting down Torgilius the Chamberlain!

This game was played over a month ago at the beginning of May. We kind of got a bit busy with other things after that for a few weeks...

As Decapitation Journeys take a bit longer, we played this on a Sunday afternoon when we didn't have anything specific going on...

In this game, Amanda played Qlathis the Exile and Glaurio ven Alten III. Finnegan played Octren Glimscry and Brutogg Corpse-Eater.

As always, the Decapitation Journey started with a dash through the streets and alleys of Ulfenkarn to escape a Suffocating Gravtide!

The first two rooms FILLED with rats and bats were easy enough to clear out!

And then they ran into Torgilius!? The TARGET of the evening's hunt!

Brutogg and Qulathis beat him down before he could open his mouth and summon more bats or rats or cast a spell at them!

They knew that wouldn't be the last of him they saw this evening, though... When they made it to his lair he would have to be put down again - and all his phylacteries destroyed!

Next they were assaulted by a patrol of the Ulfenwatch!

The larger groups at Level Three aren't too much more difficult to slay... but they do take time... and that slows the group down, so they just barely kept ahead of the Suffocating Gravetide...

With the Gravetide hot on their heels... they ran into Radukar the Wolf!

Yikes!

Glaurio was the first into the room and blew two large holes in the venerable vampire with his pistols. Qulathis finished him of with a couple of arrows...

Then charged past the disipating corpse to attack the Zombies beyond...

Sweet Jiminy! They were just running into ALL the Big Bads this evening... A Vargskyr was lurking just around the next corner!

Brutogg was the first into contact laying a serious beating on the gigantic beast.

Then Glaurio joined in blasting with pistols and slashing with sword!

Just a few last deadwalker zombies to knock down...

and they'd found their way to the entrance to Torgilius' lair!

We took a break and had supper and I set up Torgilius' residence.

This hunt had some interesting new features - which made me wonder what might be coming... The Guard and Torgilius don't move until they activate with any of the Heroes within their line of sight (so, in the room with them, or at the door of an adjacent room) which was nice... BUT, there were NO DESTINY DICE until Torgilius was slain!

Qulathis charged through the entrance and started clearing away huge swarms of rats...

Glaurio smashed the first Phylactery! Hope Torgilius felt that and got a little afraid!

Then everyone was SWARMED with Rats and Bats!

It took some fighting to clear them all away.

Brutogg smashed the next Phylactery!

Then Octren smashed the third... after admiring himself a moment in the magical mirror...

Uggghhh...so many rats and bats... I think by this point Glaurio wasn't in a good way. I think he had one or two grievous wounds and one or two diseased tokens!

He has such poor vitality, that it is difficult for him to get rid of them with recovery actions...

a few brief moments were taken to give everyone a chance to catch their breath - and for Glaurio to fruitlessly attempt to recover a few of the wounds... This is where Destiny dice get REALLY IMPORTANT!

Octren tried to hold off the swarms of bats and rats at door...

Glaurio eventually recovered one or two of his injuries and charged in against the Kosargi Nightguard, blowing holes in the monsterous undead ogor.

He continued on into Torgilius' chamber and blew a few holes in him!

"You FOOLS! DON'T YOU KNOW THAT... "

BLAM! BLAM!

A  few more shots wounded Torgilius so grievously, his last Phylactery shattered....

Then Brutogg charged in and battered the withered old man to a pulp!

Torgilius was no more...

But they still had to escape through hordes of rats and bats...

and MORE Kosargi Nightguard that were rushing to Torgilus' aid, much to late...

Late though they were, they were still very dangerous!

Octren almost at the door leading to the extraction point!

GAH! ANOTHER Kosargi Nightguard!

Everyone almost at the Extraction Point!

ANOTHER Kosargi Nightguard - and it stormed into the Extraction Point, blocking Glaurio's escape!

Once in there it took out Qulathis!

The Kosargi Nightguard was destroyed and the Hunters made their escape.

Back on the Adamant, Qulathis was revived and there was much rejoicing!

BOOM! Torgilius gone... Only two more decapitation journeys to go on... the next would be to hunt down the Ven Alten triplets - cousin's of Glaurio that have been turned into vicious vampires in the service of Radukar the Wolf!

But before that, they wanted to tool up a bit more...
