On the Workbench

It's Work-In-Progress Wednesday! Here is what is haunting my workbench these days...

There is a lot of the same stuff I've been plucking away at (brushing away at...?) for the last few weeks - with a few new additions that have snuck their way on... distracting me from my plan to finish up the Blackstone Fortress minis!

With the release of Psychic Awakening: Pariah and the updated Inquisition rules, I've gotten thinking about Inquisition Forces again - so I rebased a few minis, including these old Guard Stormtroopers, for ONE of the planned Inquisition forces! They will be Stormtrooper acolytes in the retinue of the Chesterwind sisters - Sam(anther) and Dee(ana) - Ordo Malleus DAEMON HUNTERS!

(You can see Dee Chesterwind, with her bolder and chainsword, just off to the left of the picture)

I'm a little confused by the rules, though, It seems you can only ever have ONE inquisitor in any detachment - so I'll have to build up TWO detachments - one around each of the sisters...? I guess I'll have to build a third around their mom, Jane Chesterwind, who became a Daemon Hunter after their father was killed by a Daemon!

Antother Inquisitorial force I have in the works. Finnegan picked up the new Ordo Xenos Lord Inquisitor Kyria Draxus model - because he thought she looked cool and would go along with his Deathwatch (as they are the Chamber Militant for the Ordo Xenos)... so I've assembled primed her and finished assembling and priming all his Deathwatch... They may have to step in to pick up finish the mission in The Signal Campaign, if the Imperial Fists fail... and I DEFINITELY have a plan for them to show up in the Rise Up! Campaign!

The Priority right now - a couple of Genestealer Cultist characters - who will also be showing up in BOTH of the narrative campaigns I am currently running!

I also picked up these two; the Daemonifuge – Ephrael Stern & Kyganil - though it seems, once again, I have missed out on grabbing a copy of the Daemonifuge Graphic Novel as Games Workshop didn't amen nearly enough and it sold out on pre-order... and they couldn't possibly REPRINT a book... maybe in another DECADE... y'know for the 30TH anniversary printing...

Goddamnit, GW, you just make it SO EASY for the haters out there with bull$h!t like this...

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

Reports of Game Two of both the Rise Up! and The Signal campaigns.

Finnegan and I played Game Two of The Signal yesterday, and I'll be posting the report... oh... a couple minutes after this one...

Da Boyz will be back tomorrow to play Game Two of the Rise Up! campaign.

MORE Grey Knights (and their FOES!)

Well, once I started rolling with the Grey Knights, I thought I'd just carry on and finish up a few more. It's one of those forces where I don't really have all that much to do and then it's, kind of, DONE. Well... sort of... I mean, all the stuff I HAVE will be done and, having done all that, I'll have a completely useable force.... Sure, there are other things I COULD add to it... like two more terminators to complete a unit of those... or a Land Raider, to carry around aid terminators or the Brother Captain (who also wears Terminator armour)... Or TWO Land Raiders (one for the Squad and one for the Captain... and maybe the Inquisitor in the Terminator Armour)... Or, really, just about anything could be added to this force.... but I like the idea of keeping it SMALL. A small, tight, super elite band of brothers that work directly with a small select group of Inquisitors - who have no trouble requisitioning entire companies of Imperial Guard, when they see fit!

Also, I happened to finish up some of the potential Nemesises....? Nemesees....? Nemesi....? Whatever... some potential opponents for the Grey Knights - a Master of Possession and two Greater Possessed. THey've actually been skulking around my workbench for months. I got them with the Start Collecting Chaos Space Armies box and, while I had no plans to include them in the force for Battleforce Recon - which had been my main focus for completing Chaos Space Marines - there is a short campaign involving both the Master of Possession and Greater Possessed in the Blackstone Fortress Annual!

So... starting with the "Good Guys"...

Grey Knights and Inquisitors and Acolyte.

I did also rebase this Inquisitor Stapelton and his acolyte, Vives. Stapelton is also an Ordo Malleus inquisitor, so I guess I now have THREE of them. A triumvirate, I guess.

The Grey Knight Squad - Beta Carotene Squad. Two of these I'd actually painted previously, they just ended up in this squad as part of the Re-org. I did repaint their insignia/devices, so.... From left to right, the Squad includes; Bother Brett, Brother Todd, Justicar Jeremy, Brother Trevor, and Brother Gordon.

Brother Dirk,
Grey Knight Terminator - Nemesis Force Halberd, Storm Bolter (I guess that's what we're calling that bolter-like-thingie on the end of his halberd, Krak, Psyk-Out, and Frag Grenades
Specialism: Veteran
Skills: Grizzled (Ignore penalties to Leadership and never tests)
36 Points

For the time being, this fellow, and the other two Grey Knight Terminators I have still to paint, will likely only be used in Kill Team (as I need five for a full strength Terminator Squad in regular 40K or Apocalypse... I mean, I guess I could use an understrength squad... buuuuut....)

The whole daemon-hunting force so far.

Master of Possession and two Greater Possessed. In addition to being an addition to my Emperor's Children 40K Forces and being able to be used in Blackstone Fortress, both the Master of Possession and the Greater Possessed can be used in Kill Team.... But still no Noise Marines in Kill Team...

I haven't named these yet...

Whoopsie, almost forgot this one. A Vindicare Assassin. When they did a little Made-to-Order or Inquisition and Assassin figures, I picked up the two assassins I didn't have (so I'd have a full set of old metal ones) and an Inquisitor and Daemonhost and a priest... then, much to my dismay, the assassins they sent were FINECAST!? GAH!? Ah, well... I'm getting over it... sort of... or.. maybe I will... Anyway, this one is done. I still have a metal Culexus Assassin and the finecast Callidus Assassin.

Probably a May Games (and other stuff) update... Maybe some pics of those Marines and Imperial Guard I finished up last week...

Grey Knights

Last week I finished up an Ordo Malleus Inquisitor in Terminator Armour and that got me thinking about the Grey Knights again - as Daemon-Hunting adepts of the Ordo Malleus - and I ended up reorganizing and rebasing the force. Or, at least, the ones I had painted so far... And I finished off one Grey Knight that was partly painted - to complete a newly reorganized squad. With the rebasing I added two Commanders (a Brother Captain and a Brotherhood Champion) and a regular Grey Knight Strike Squad and a Grey Knight Purgation Squad to the Inquisitor's Force of Daemon Hunters.

Newly finished Grey Knight (Brother Roger) AND a Death Watch Marine of Finnegan's I painted this week. I had originally tried painting the Death Watch with Contrast® paints... but it looked like garbage, so I repainted the whole thing and it looks much better now...

Here is the force so far...

Daemon Hunters! A couple of Ordo Malleus Inquisitors and a small force of Grey Knights

As Iv'e been thinking about Kill Team a lot lately, so I was mostly considering how I'd organize them for Kill Team. Thus the points and specialisms and skills mentioned below are for when they are being fielded in Kill Team.

The pair I've earmarked as Ordo Malleus Inquisitors.

I Haven't actually named either yet...

Nor have I statted them out for Kill Team - as there AREN'T really rules for Inquisitors in Kill Team... YET! But, the one in Terminator Armour I figure I could use her "as Brother Captain" Grey Knight. The other...? Maybe as a "As Brotherhood Champion"...? But give him a combo-weapon (that Brotherhood champions aren't normally supposed to have)

Brother Captain Alan
Brother Captain with Nemesis Force Sword, Storm Bolter, Krak, Psyk-Out, and Frag Grenades
Commander Specialism: Strength
Level One - Skill: Muscular - 100 Points
Level Two - Skill: Brutal Strike - 120 Points
Level Three - Skill: Devastating Power - 140 Points
Level Four - Skill: Crusher - 165 Points

Not being sure what level I'd field the Brother Captain at, I've figured out what I'd field him at for each level, and have done the same for the Brotherhood Champion below.

Brother Champion Tyson
Brother Captain with Nemesis Force Sword, Storm Bolter, Krak, Psyk-Out, and Frag Grenades
Commander Specialism: Melee
Level One - Skill: Expert Fighter - 108 Points
Level Two - Skill: Warrior Born - 128 Points
Level Three - Skill: Precision Strike - 148 Points
Level Four - Skill: Lightning Reflexes - 173 Points

Alpha Wolf Squad (from left to right: Brother Roger, Brother Steve, Justicar Jeff, Brother Blake, and Brother Curtis)

Justicar Jeff
Grey Knight Justicar - Nemesis Force Sword, Storm Bolter, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades
Specialism: Leader
Skill: Resourceful (+1 Command Point per turn)
19 Points

Brother Steve
Grey Knight Gunner - Incinerator, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades
Specialism: Demolitions
Skill: Breacher (+1 wound rolls against targets that are obscured)
22 Points

Brother Blake
Grey Knight - Nemesis Force Halberd, Storm Bolter, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades
Specialism: Zealot
Skill: Frenzied (+1A and +1S in a battle round in which they charged)
18 Points

Brother Curtis
Grey Knight - Nemesis Force Halberd, Storm Bolter, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades
Specialism: Combat
Skill: Expert Fighter (+1A)
18 Points

Brother Roger
Grey Knight - Nemesis Force Halberd, Storm Bolter, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades
18 Points

Alpha Wolf Squad is a full-sized Kill Team on it's own - at 95 points. The rest of the squads are, more or less, just extras that could be added into the roster.

Delta Badhand Squad - (from left to right: Brother James, Brother Kyle, Justicar Brian, Brother Scott, and Brother Robin)

Justicar Brian
Grey Knight Justicar - Nemesis Force Halberd, Storm Bolter, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades
Specialism: Leader
19 Points

Brother
Grey Knight Gunner - Incinerator, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades
22 points

Brother
Grey Knight Gunner - Incinerator, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades
22 points

Brother
Grey Knight Gunner - Incinerator, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades
22 points

Brother
Grey Knight Gunner - Incinerator, Krak Grenades, Psyk-Out Grenades
22 points

Being Fielded in 40K or Apocalypse... currently... this would only be a Patrol Detachment... But I'd only be able to take TWO of the HQ Elements

HQ Elements
Inquisitor 4PL
Inquisitor in Terminator Armour 6PL
Brother Captain 6PL
Brotherhood Champion 5Pl

Troops
Strike Squad (5) 8 PL

Heavy Support
Purgation Squad (5) 7PL

STILL TO DO!

I have two other squads to finish up: Beta Carotene Squad and Charley Horse Squad - both are just Regular Grey Knight Squads. They'll only ever be used in regular 40K or Apocalypse - when this force is fielded as an allied Battalion Detachment for any Imperial Force. I also have two Rhinos that could ferry the four five-man squads around... I'd need something else for the command elements (Captain and Champion).

When these are all finished up, I should be able to field the force as an allied Battalion Detachment for any of my Imperial forces in either regular 40K or 40K: Apocalypse

I also have three Grey Knight Terminators to paint up. They'll probably only ever be used in Kill Team, because to use them otherwise I'd have to track down two more of them. I just can't be bothered at this point... I guess I should never say never....

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

I have some Necromundan Imperial Guard I'm currently organizing for Kill Team, as well as some Imperial Fist Space Marines. Writing a bit more background for each of those... so... it's taking longer... I guess tomorrow I'll be posting Part One of May's Games (and Other Stuff)

Inquisitors, Watch Master, Genestealer Patriarch

A bunch of stuff rolling off the workbench this week, but a fair bit of it is going into a couple separate posts that will require a bit more work. These are the few things that don't really fit into either of those other posts...

Inquisitors! Two inquisitors for Warhammer 40K. One is an older metal Inquisitor in Terminator Armour, the other is a more recent casting of Gregor Eisenhorn.

Inquisitor Eisenhorn. Eisenhorn is the protagonist of a series of novels by Dan Abnett - that I recently started reading... and then stopped... After finishing the first one as I'd gotten distracted by Ciaphus Caine. When will I finish off the series...? Maybe after I'm done with Ciaphus Cain...? But there are TEN novels in that series! I'm part way through the second!? Mind you there is also Honorbound on my reading list... and I never did finish that Kal Jericho omnibus I'd started... (Too! Many! Books! To! Read!)

I'd like to put together a team of Adepts to represent a couple of Eisenhorn's companions... not sure where I'll find minis for them. Chasterner Godwin Fischig shouldn't be to hard - just use one of the Adeptus Arbites I already have (or... track down another one...?). Midas Betancore, a Glavian pilot with some sneaky-beaky spy craft skillz... dude in a bodysuit with a needler? Alizabeth Bequin - a psychic blank, former pleasure girl...? Maybe a spare Escher model could be adapted? Uber Aemos, the Savant? Might have something already that might work...?

Inquisitor in Terminator Armour. Haven't decided on a name for this Inquisitor just yet... but I think he or she will be an Inquisitor in the Ordo Malleus and be the nominal leader of my Grey Knights. I have three other, older, metal Grey Knight Terminator models I need to paint up - that could be part of this Inquisitor's entourage.

Watch Master of the Death Watch - super elite Xenos-hunting marines gathered from all of the chapters. They are the Chamber Militant of the Ordos Xenos branch of the Inquisition (like the Grey Knights, mentioned above, are the Chamber Militant of the Ordo Malleus). This is actually one of Finnegan's figures. I though I'd paint it for him. The next White Dwarf, if/when it ever ships, apparently had an article about the Death Watch and includes rules for using a Watch Master in Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress - using the Army of One rules - like the ones we used for the Harlequin Solitaire or that I plan to use for the Eversor Assassin.

There are a few others miniatures of his I'm going to be painting over the next little bit because I have  a little narrative campaign in mind for Kill Team... I've started with THIS ONE...

A Genestealer Patriarch! Another one of Finnegan's minis. I quickly knocked this one off with Contrast paints. Not the prettiest... but it's DONE and good enough to go on the table and get shot up by a bunch of Marines and Guard... hopefully...

These are two more Imperial Fist Scout Marines I also finished up. They'll also appear in one of the upcoming posts with more background fluff... but I thought I'd include them as a preview here, as there are just the two...

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

I have a few posts I should be finishing up in the next day or so...

April Games (and Other Stuff) Part Four - wrapping up the games we played (and other stuff we did) in the last week and a bit of April.... seems like forever ago that I posted Part Three.... but it really was just a week and a day or so!?

Detachment Xn - Imperial Fists Kill Team - pictures and background of the Imperial Fist Kill Team I've been working on (and just finished two more for!)

3rd Squad, 2nd Platoon, B Company, 5th Necromundan Regiment - a PILE of Imperial Guard that I've finished off for ANOTHER Kill Team. (finishing off the ones I'd posted in the Guard Kill Teams post)

MORE Grey Knights

I finished up a few more Grey Knights...

The lot of new ones. the dudes with incinerators are from that batch of ten or so that I got for $5. The extra guys with Nemesis Force Halberds I picked upon eBay to finish off two squads.

I have a Justicar and a Brotherhood champion that arrived this week still to paint as well (after I finish stripping the old paint off) as a Brother Captain in Terminator armour (who is just about finished - he required some converting, but is almost done). The Justicar will finish two squads and the Other two will give me some headquarters options so they can be fielded as a Patrol detachment.

I have to admit I actually just bought a SECOND Strike Squad or these older metal Grey Knights, and am on the lookout for a third so they could be fielded as "Battalion" detachment. I am a bit of an idiot - a month or so ago if you asked me if I would ever put together a force of Grey Knights, I probably would have laughed at you and asked "Why would I want to do that!?" All I can say is I'm a sucker for a good deal... Of course the good deals are never enough to field a complete force, so then I end up spending waaaaaaaaay more than I ever would have intended to get that good deal into a useable force... I should have stopped at the Kill Team...

I've done a little reorganizing of the original group, and repainting of a couple of shoulder pads and swapping one of the ones previously armed with an incinerator into the Purgation Squad. The Strike Squad now all have left shoulder pads that have a while background and the Purgation Squad all have left shoulder pads that are red. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the second Strike Squad. I did this to make them more easily identifiable. Do I pick NEW colours for the second (and possibly third) Strike Squads? Or do I just make them white like the first Strike Squad. So far my palette for this force has been metal, gold, red, and white... do I really WANT to introduce more colours? I guess I could use black and metal...? Or If I did white I could conceivable reorganize some of them into a single larger squad of ten - because they CAN be fielded in squads of ten - should the need occur...

The Purgation Squad: Justicar Brian, Brother James, Brother Robin, Brother Scott, and Brother Kyle.

The Strike Squad/Kill Team - so far Brother Blake, Brother Trevor, Brother Curtis, Brother Steve, and Brother Gordon. (The second incinerator is allowed in Kill Team, if fielding these for regular 40K, on of the incinerators will be swapped out for Justicar Jeff... when being used in Kill Team, one of the guys with the Nemesis Force halberds will be swapped out for Justicar Jeff.... y'know.. when I finish painting him...).

The whole force along with their Ordo Malleus Inquisitor and part of his retinue. (I've also recently picked up a few old metal Necromunda figures that I'm going to use as Inquisitorial acolytes - stay tuned for those!)

I've also done some taking stock of my 40K forces/projects I'm thinking about trying to finish up next year. In addition to Tallarn and Valhallan forces that need painting (and a few more Kill Teams... and a tonne of terrain...), I have an Aeldari craft world force - and I'm NINE miniatures away from being able to organize the force into a "Brigade" detachment for 40K (y'know, once they're all PAINTED!). Unfortunately they're not all of one type - I need 3 Howling Banshees, 1 Fire Dragon, 2 Warp Spiders, and 3 Swooping Hawks - ideally one of each of these being an exarch... So I've done some snooping on eBay - and the crazy thing is, in few cases, it would be cheaper for me to buy a full squad of FIVE than it would be to buy single figures!? But buying full squads would leave me in the same situation - with incomplete squads!? GAH!?

Other (not-so-40K) projects for the new year - finishing up French and English Seven Years War forces for Rebels and Patriots, a few forces for The Pikeman's Lament, and a couple Dwarf forces for Dragon Rampant.

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

Probably the Brother Captain, Brotherhood Champion and Justicar Jeff. Not sure what I'm going to name the Captain and Champion yet...

After that...? Games!? More Minis!?

Maybe some background fluff for a Call of Cthulhu character I've been developing for a campaign I'll be playing in the new year....?

Of course once that Reaver Titan arrives, it will likely jump to the front of the queue!

Ordo Malleus Inquisitor

Last week Finnegan was sick. Earlier this week it was The Girl. Now I've been sick since Friday.... So production has slowed somewhat... I did managed to finish off this 40K Inquisitor - He's been lurking about my painting desk for the last year (I think I picked him up on Boxing Day...?). With the Grey Knights finished (or, at least, the first batch of them!), I figured they would need an Inquisitor to lead them into battle against the Daemons of the Warp! Originally I'd started to paint this fellows armour in black, but decided to change that up after I finished the Grey Knights so he'd sort of match... a bit... At one point I thought I might be able to pass him off as a Grey Knight champion, but then realized the combined-bolter is not something the Grey Knights use... Ah, well... they need an Inquisitor anyway...

Inquisitor from Games Workshop.

I really should have come up with a name for this fellow....

Here he is consulting with another Inquisitor (the other one I own - that's painted!)

And here he is with the Grey Knights he may one day lead into battle!

Coming soon to Tims Miniature Wargaming Blog:

We didn't get in any Kill Team this weekend - I was too sick and everyone else just wanted to finish binge-watching Agents of SHIELD Season Four before we had to return it to the library - 22 episodes in ONE WEEK - that's a lot to ask of anyone... Maybe next weekend...

I have some Miniatorum priests that seem to have moved to the front of the workbench which I may try to finish off... as well as the remaining crew of the New Dawn - Eulcia Vhale's Vessel...
