Not Dead Yet - Necrons and other Kill Team Stuff

For the last few weeks... (maybe a month...?). I've been getting together with a couple of friends on Discord and having a paint and chat on Sunday afternoons. I haven't been doing much PAINTING, though, mostly assembling. Over the last two weeks I assembled some Necrons from the Kill Team: Shadowvaults box...

Turns out I dislike assembling Necrons ALMOST as much as I dislike playing against them... But they're done! Well... ASSEMBLED, at least.

In the last month, I've also assembled and primed all the miniatures from the Kill Team: Ashes of Faith box set. I was tempted to try and knock off the Sisters of Silence - as they seem easy and maybeFINISHING some stuff might get me motivated to PAINT MORE!!! But I've decided to try and finish ASSEMBLING all the stuff... and THEN worry about figuring out what to paint and when.

Although... I'm tempted to paint Necrons as well, now... I could go with very simple paint jobs on them - just to finish some stuff.

Will I ever PLAY with the Necrons...? I don't know... Maybe just to try them out. A more likely (relatively speaking) is that I might use them as opponents in a game of Wrath & Glory.

We shall see...

40 Days of 40K - Part Four

A few more illustrations from the 40 Days of 40K Challenge.

Day 16 - Grot Tank Commander

Day 17 - Custodes

Not going to lie, I kind of prefer the old school, Rogue Trader era Adeptus Custodes. You know, the ones that guarded the Emperor on his Golden Throne and never, EVER LEFT HOLY TERRA and stalked around the throne room in leather pants, black capes, bare chests, and conical helmets, like some weird BDSM enthusiasts with an Eldar kink…?

Does he look a little like he’s LARPing 300 (the movie)...?

Day 18 - Death Corps of Krieg

Day 19 - Chaos Cultist

This particular one is a devotee of Slaanesh, the dark god of indulgence and excess.

Day 20 - Kroot

That's all for now.

I'll have another batch in a few days.

If you want to keep up with the (almost) daily drawings as they are done, I'm posting them...

Renegade Knight Acheron (and Other Chaos Goodies!)

Okay, I got a little distracted... I can't even think of HOW I ended up working on this again!? Ah, well... It's done, I can hopefully get back to working on Blackstone Fortress stuff now!

The Cerastus Knight-Acheron was not a planned purchase. I picked it up last summer along with a HUGE LOT OF IMPERIAL GUARD. Originally hadn't even discussed the knight, but the dude I was buying it all from brought it along and said he'd "throw it in" for a ridiculously low amount... like $30 or $50...? How could I NOT buy that!? It was even (mostly) assembled - I mean, it HAD been full assembled and painted, but then broken and was in need of repair.

In theory I COULD have just glued it back together and used it as is... but... that's just not my way! So, I primed it black and started over! I washout 90% complete - having painted it in a green and yellow scheme when I stalled... (for the very same reason I never finished the OTHER KNIGHT!) I couldn't decide on any heraldry! And so it (they) sat.

Late last year, when I got it into my head that I should make a CHAOS army, I decided that I should do all my knights as RENEGADE (or Chaos) Knights! (Or, two of them, at least... I still have plans for the third, which remains, to this day, on the sprue!). So I blacked out the armoured plates on this one and started over. heraldry wasn't an issue, because I wasn't going to do any individual heraldry - just some chaos symbols.

Cerastus Knight-Acheron from Forge World.

I haven't come up with a name for this beastie just yet... I'm not 100% sure I'm actually FINISHED PAINTING it yet. I'm not loving the "camouflage" on the central part of the carapace. I was thinking this morning the I may repaint it the same purple that the weapons, helmet and kneepads are painted... with or without some more chaos-y sigils. The "camouflage" just looks a little TOO busy.

I was kind of going for a look inspired by the original Noise Marine. The "camouflage" on the central part of the carapace came about because I wanted something rainbow-ish up there... and then thought of the camouflage I did on the other knight... and thought I'd do something similar - but with not-so-muted rainbow colours - and not nearly so small, neat, and even... Too much...? Can you really have "too much" on Chaos stuff...? Especially Chaos stuff that's aligned with Slaanesh? I worry that it might be painful for my opponents to look at... but then... maybe that's not a BAD thing for Chaos...

In the end I may just leave it... because I am lazy (if repainting something TWICE, and not wanting to do it a THIRD time can be called lazy!?)... and this is DONE and I have SO MUCH OTHER STUFF still to do! Maybe, once I'm done the rest of the chaos army, if I STILL hate it then... THEN I will repaint it! There. Done. Decision made!

I might rebase this at some point sooner, though. It's odd that it came on a smaller base than the other knights - especially considering it's taller, heavier (being solid resin!), and more top-heavy than the plastic ones. That's probably why it was broken when I got it - it probably toppled over and got smashed by its own weight.

Speaking of the base. I didn't put any dried grass clumps on it yet, as I'm also considering just repainting the base. I went with the sandy desert look when I repainted it (thinking, at the time, it would most likely be walking in support of my Tallarn forces), but now that it's working for the Dark Gods... and most of my Chaos stuff is now on urban-like-bases... I'm considering repainting it to look like the crumbled concrete of a ruined city... y'know... like it was ORIGINALLY painted.

I...

I am a special kind of stupid...

One day I'll laugh at all this. Hopefully you're all laughing already!

Hey - speaking of Chaos forces on urban bases...

Over the last month, or so, I've rebased all the Chaos Cultists I have (I also picked up a couple more boxes of the cheap 5/$12 cultists, as they've just gone out of production) I have another 15 of these to paint up - which will make 30 - could be 3 units of ten, or one big unit of 30. I've converted a few of the new ones so that, if fielding them as units of ten, in a game of apocalypse, I'll have two units or ten all armed with autoguns, and a third unit of ten with autopistols and "brutal assault weapons"

Complete forces of Chaos... so far...

Wow... That's like Campbell's Chunky CHAOS SOUP!

(Yes, that is an old Keeper of Secrets I'm using as a Daemon Prince of Chaos)

So far, I guess that could be fielded (in Warhammer 40000: Apocalypse, the only 40K mass battle I really care about at the moment) as...

Chaos Battalion Detachment
HQ - Daemon Prince of Chaos - 9PL
Troops - Cultists with Heavy Stubber (10) - 3PL
Troops - Bloodletters (10) - 4PL
Troops - Daemonettes (10) - 4PL

Chaos Vanguard Detachment
HQ - Karanak - 4PL
Elite - Rogue Psyker - 3PL
Elite - Rogue Psyker - 3PL
Elite - Plague Marines (5) - 4PL
Fast Attack - Flesh Hounds (5) - 3PL

Chaos Knight Auxiliary Super Heavy Detachment
Lord of War - Renegade Knight Acheron - 26PL

63 Power Level in total.

I should see if Keira wants to do battle - she's been pretty excited about the idea of me doing Slaanesh stuff as it gives her a chance to make use of the Ancient Doom rule that all her Eldar have!

I still have a lot to complete. When everything I have is all assembled and painted, I should have (Organized for Warhammer 40000: Apocalypse):

Emperor's Children Battalion Detachment
HQ - Sorcerer - 3PL
Troops - Cultists with Heavy Stubber (10) - 3PL
Troops - Cultists (10) - 2PL
Troops - Cultists (10) - 2PL

Emperor's Children Battalion Detachment
HQ - Chaos Lord in Terminator Armour - 7PL
Troops - Chaos Space Marines (5) - 4PL
Troops - Noise Marines with Blast Master (5) - 5PL
Troops - Noise Marines with Blast Master (5) - 5PL
Elite - Terminators With Reaper Autocannon (5) - 12PL

Death Guard Battalion/Vanguard Detachment
HQ - ?
Elite - Plague Marines (5) - 4PL
Elite - Plague Marines (5) - 4PL
Elite - Plague Marines (10) - 7PL
(in regular 40K these would be three units of seven... but for some reason in Apocalypse they're only foldable in units of 5/10/15/20...?)

Khorne Daemon Patrol Detachment
HQ - Karanak - 4PL
Troops - Bloodletters (10) - 4PL
Fast Attack - Flesh Hounds (5) - 3PL
Elites - Blood Crushers (3) - 6PL

Slaanesh Daemon Battalion Detachment
HQ - Infernal Enrapturess - 5PL
Troops - Daemonettes (10) - 4PL
Troops - Daemonettes (10) - 4PL
Troops - Daemonettes (10) - 4PL
Fast Attack - Seekers (5) - 6PL
Fast Attack - Seekers (5) - 6PL
Heavy Support - Exhalted Seeker Chariot - 9PL

Slaanesh Daemon Vanguard Detachment
HQ - Daemon Prince of Chaos - 9PL
Elite - Fiend of Slaanesh - 3PL
Elite - Fiend of Slaanesh - 3PL
Elite - Fiend of Slaanesh - 3PL
Elite - Fiend of Slaanesh - 3PL

Chaos Knight Auxiliary Super Heavy Detachment
Lord of War - Renegade Knight Acheron - 26PL

Chaos Knight Auxiliary Super Heavy Detachment
Lord of War - Knight Despoiler (with Stormspear Rocket Pod) - 25PL

181 Power Level in total... a pretty decent size for an Apocalypse army (though a little light on the Heavy Hitters!)... Or a smaller one with a few options... Ideally, at SOME point (probably NOT this year) I'd like to add a few things to these forces.  One of the new Keeper of Secrets models, for one! A third Chaos knight might be nice - just to make a full Super Heavy Detachment of three. I do HAVE A third knight I COULD paint up as a Chaos Knight... but I had plans for her... and if I got a third knight for this force, I think I'd rather get a Knight Desecrator or Rampager. Also, I love the idea of having SWARMS of Daemonettes - like, three units of thirty of them! Also, another two units of Bloodletters might be fun - just to upgrade the Khorne patrol into a "battalion" detachment... And maybe some Nurgle character to lead the Deathguard detachment.

Oh, I suppose I could actually make a Black Legion Detachment out of all the Blackstone Fortress minis...

Black Legion Battalion Detachment
HQ - Obsidius Mallex - 4PL
Troops - Traitor Guardsmen (7) - 2PL
Troops - Traitor Guardsmen (7) - 2PL
Troops - Cultists of the Abyss (8) - 2PL
Troops - Cultists of the Abyss (8) - 2PL
Elite - Rogue Psyker - 3PL
Elite - Rogue Psyker - 3PL
Elite - Negavolt Cultists (4) - 2PL
Elite - Chaos Beastmen (4) - 1PL
Another 19 Power Level... which would put me at 200PL..

Space Rats, Melta Guns and Spooky Chibis

A few things rolling off the workbench this week...

Superdeformed (or "chibi") spooky characters from Reaper bones. More experimenting with Contrast paints. How I've been doing a lot of these are undercoating with black gesso, then doing a heavy dry brush with a white gesso, and THEN applying Contrast paints - it keeps the dark recesses DARK - even if the contrast paint is... not-so-dark...

It's fast... I'll say that. And if it means more people get more painted toys on the table, then I'm all for it. I wouldn't mind facing warriors painted this way - better than unpainted grey plastic!! But I don't love the look of them....

Another ganger for the One-Eyed Red Snakes Delaque Necromunda Gang. The figure is a conversion, I think he had a lasgun or autogun originally... and I already had TWO of that figure, so I decided to convert it to have a special weapon of some sort... and I had a Meltagun that seemed like it would be easy to fit in there...

Give then state of my gang in the current campaign, it will be a LONG time before he ever gets recruited...

A few more Mantic Vermyn for John's Chaos cultists Necromunda Gang/Kill Team.

The Gang so far. The old Rat Ogre is the Cult Demagogue (or Cultist Champion in Kill Team). The old Poison Wind Globadier will be used as a Cult Witch. There is a Disciple (Champion) with a Heavy Stubber. I have another ten or so to paint, but I think this would probably be enough to get him started. Among the others are another heavy stubbed and two rats with Flamers (or HEAVY Flamers...?) I got a couple weeks to get the rest finished up.

The gang, so far, might look a little like:

Cult Demagogue (the old Rat Ogre) - Filter Plugs, Auto Pistol, Sword - (Leader/Cunning/Ferocity Skill - 140 credits

Cult Witch (the old Poisoned Wind Globadier) - Sword, Respirator - Psyker - Wyrd Power - 105 credits

Cult Disciple - Heavy Stubber, Respirator, Fighting Knife - (Cunning/Ferocity Skill) - 205 credits

Cult Helot - Autogun, Fighting Knife, Respirator - 80 credits

Cult Helot - Autogun, Fighting Knife, Respirator - 80 credits

Cult Helot - Autogun, Fighting Knife, Respirator - 80 credits

Cult Helot - Auto Pistol, Chainsword, Respirator - 85 credits

Cult Helot - Auto Pistol, Chainsword, Respirator - 85 credits

Cult Helot - Auto Pistol, Sword, Respirator - 80 credits

Cult Helot - Auto Pistol, Fighting Knife, Respirator - 75 credits

Cult Helot - Auto Pistol, Fighting Knife, Respirator, Frag Grenades - 105 credits

1120 credits so far... more than enough to start a Dominion Campaign! Some of those Hellots could just as easily be Disciples - for a few less, but more powerful starting dudes...

Skirmish Saturday Night: Kill Team

This past Saturday, we were supposed to be playing Wrath & Glory, but as with the last 3-4 sessions, half the players bailed and we ended up cancelling. One of the players, Jacob, was free though, so he came over and we played some Kill Team!

As I knew he was bringing an Astra Militarum Kill Team - all Tempestus Scions - I dug out my Heretic Astartes Kill Team to face the Hammer of the Emperor.

We played the "Stow Away" scenario out of the Sector Munitorum Kill Zone box. Basically the Chaos Cultists, backed up by a couple of Chaos Space Marines, were trying to secret themselves among some shipping containers that were to be taken off-world in an attempt to infiltrate the fleet in orbit. Unfortunately there were some Tempestus Scions on sentry duty around the Munitorum warehouses.

The scenario was pretty straight forward - I had a small deployment zone entered on one of the short edges. The Scions could set up sentries anywhere that wasn't in or within 5" of my deployment zone - and they could not move on the first turn. The game was determined by victory points I got 1 point for each cultist (or marine?) I was able to stow away in a container, the Scions got one point for each of my guys taken out of action. To get my guys to stow away they needed to be within 2" of a container - and remain there for the entire turn - and not have any enemy within 4". I further declared that they should be within 2" of one of the ENDS of the containers where the actual doors are...

I really liked the scenario - it had a lot of narrative flavour. I figured the Marines were there to shoot up the sentries and make a diversion while the cultists tried to sneak aboard the containers.

Start positions.

If I were a smart person (no one has ever accused me of being so!) I would have packed as many cultists up against that one container at the edge of my deployment zone and squished them all in on turn one! I'm not sure why I didn't...? It's been a little too long since I've played... I was busy thinking about other things...?

Jacob seemed pretty intimidated by my numbers... He had NOTHING to worry about...

The firefight amongst the containers was short and brutal!

He totally took my leader out of action on the FIRST TURN! GAH! Things kind of went downhill from there...

I think this was the Tempestor - charging up to get close enough to my guys skulking behind the container to deny them entry... Tempestus Scions are nasty... 3+ WS/BS hits a lot. 4+ saves... save a lot of lives... So many plasma guns... that could hit... the Hotshot volley gun was pretty brutal as well!

(I have some Scions of my own... I may need to get THEM painted up sooner rather than later!!)

Marine and Cultists exchange fire with a pair of Scions taking cover behind some crates.

More cultists join the melee.

I think this was the end of Round Two or Three...? And things were going south fast - lost the leader (so, getting one command point per turn) - and by this time almost half of my team was out of action or sporting flesh wounds (and getting shaken)

I gave up at the end of Round Three or Four as there was no way I was going to get ANY guys in the containers, let along MORE than had been taken out of action at that point!

Fun scenario, though. As I said - have to take advantage of the enemies distance on the first turn and get as many in the crates as possible, and keep the rest from dying before the game ends!!

Since that game was so fast, we decided to play another and tried out Jacob's new Kill Team: Arena set.

this is one set I decided not to bother buying into, but it was fun to try out - and if I have a hankering to try it again, I know someone who has it!!

The scenario involved holding certain passages One point per passage and a bonus if you held more (or two more?) than the enemy, plus bonus points for completing secondary objective from a list of available ones for each scenario.

Again, despite my numbers, his vastly better quality troops just shot the crap out of the cultists...

I'd like to build myself some 3-D terrain like this - similar to my Cavern Terrain. I'm sure I could come up with my own scenarios and the bonus point system for secondary objectives didn't add enough to make me want to run out and buy Arena.

yeah, I totally lost this game too... But it was a lot of fun. Jacob is a super chill, fun guy to play with and he paints his miniatures (and he paints them well!).

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

I'm playing another game of 40K this evening, so hopefully I'll have a game report of that tomorrow or the next day. I got a bunch of work done on my Grey Knights last night (while binge-watching the last six episodes of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season Three). I figure it's eleven dudes and then that force is DONE (well, unless I decide to paint up one - or both - of the Rhinos I picked up for them... Are Grey Knight Rhinos bare metal/silver as well...?). I have an odd assortment of other things I've been plunking away at as well, so maybe by the weekend I'll be posting some more painting updates...

One of the last batch of eBay orders arrived today bringing with it five more Warp Spiders (just waiting for two more to finish off the second squad of ten), three Van Saar gangers, an old metal Chaos Sorcerer, and three Chaos Terminators! Two more orders inbound and then I am DONE with eBay for a while. DONE! These last orders include the Striking Scorpion Phoenix Lord (Karandras?), The Howling Banshee Exarch, two Warp Spiders, six Dire Avengers, an Adeptus Ministorum preacher with an eviscerator, and a WRAITH KNIGHT!?

Friday Afternoon Kill Team

Friday afternoon I dropped the kids off at a friends place for the afternoon. I thought rather than ride all the way home and ride ride back to pick them up, I could arrange to get in a few games at the Dragon's Den - which isn't very far from their friends place. I put out a request on the Hunters of the Warp group on Facebook and a Friendly fellow named Mark offered to play a few games with me.

As Mark was planning to bring Adeptus Mechanicus I brought along my Genestealer and Chaos Kill Teams - along with a couple options for Kill Zones.

GAME ONE

The First scenario we played was Take Prisoners in a Sector Mechanicus Kill Zone.

It seemed an appropriate place to start - as he was playing Ad Mech. The Take Prisoners scenario was interesting and kind of made sense. A Tyrnaid bio-pod crashed on a Forge World and genestealers were sent out to bring back samples of the locals for breakdown and study of their biological components. The Adeptus Mechanicus, for their part, having noticed the landing on their aspen would be interested in capturing nay of the visitors for their own study!

The scenario really requires you to isolate individuals in order to capture them, as that is the only thing you get victory points for - captured enemy. So, I set out two groups around the flanks. I think I lost one Genestealer early in the game to boobytraps the Ad Mech had set up amongst their machines and equipment. A second might have been injured by more booby-traps...? I can't remember.

Moving up, taking cover, ready to pounce!

Of the three on the left flank, one was blown away by overwatch fire and the remaining two found themselves a little overwhelmed facing a Sicarian Infiltrator, two Skitarii Vanguard and  Ranger (or two).

The Right flank more easily overcame a few over extended elements of his Kill Team and quickly captured our first prisoner!

Another was killed by them, but they had friendlies nearby and so could not be captured.

A Sicarian Infiltrator was isolated and surrounded... We knocked off all of it's wounds, but it just would not go down - every wound thereafter was just absorbed by armour or turned into another Flesh Wound!?

On the other flank, the second Genestealer was killed leaving one alone and surrounded.

I think by the end of the game - which ended after round five, The Ad mech had captured this Genestealer, but mine had failed to get that Sicarian, so it was even and a draw... So close!

GAME TWO

Our second game I rolled out the Heretic Astartes! This time we played the Terror Tactics scenario in a Sector Munitorum Kill Zone - In the scenario you get two victory points for each model you could get off the enemies table edge and one point for each enemy taken out of action. So better to just try and get as many off - I had a bit of an advantage in numbers with my hoard of cultists!

I tried a Bum's Rush Just throw a bunch of cultists at the Mechanicus Team and send another bunch running for the far edge of the table.

Cultists are pretty weak - so the Ad Mechs did manage to kill a BUNCH of them in the process

I did manage to get a few off - and kill a few enemy in the process.

At the end of Round Four I think it was sitting at 9-7 for victory points (I'd gotten six off and took three enemy out of action, The Ad Mechs had taken out SEVEN of mine - Including one of the Chaos Space Marines!). I had to opt for a strategic withdrawal at that point, however, as I had to go pick up the kids. I feel it could still have gone either way at that point. I could easily have gotten at least two, maybe three, more off, which would have put me in a pretty commanding lead... But he could have just as easily killed the rest of my team...

Fun games. I'll have to try and make it out to games at the Den more often.

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

Later in the evening we got in another round of our Campaign for Xoxigar, but that deserves a separate post... Stay tuned... Hopefully I'll get to that SOMETIME this weekend!!  It's going to be a busy one, though...

Heretic Astartes Kill Team

Another Kill Team ready for action - A band of Heretic Astartes and Chaos Cultists.

Kill Team Xanthaleng

Kill Team Xanthaleng (all models are from Games Workshop)

The team are worshippers of Slaanesh - These warriors exist to experience - and inflict - the most extreme physical and mental stimuli through the medium of spectacular violence. They are searching for an Arcane Prize - Despatched by their powerful master, this kill team must acquire and eldritch artefact for their master or die trying! They are also utterly insane - Whether guided by ineffable prophecy, or finally pushed past the final boundary of rational though, the deeds of tehi skill team seem like madness to their foes.

Xanthaleng, Aspiring Champion, flanked by his two specialists Arngbaal and Zothiras

Xanthaleng, Aspiring Champion - Leader Specialist - Bolter, Bolt Pistol, Frag and Krack Grenades - 13 points. Xanthaleng is a True Believer; his faith in Slaanesh is unquestioning, his devotion absolute.

Arngbaal, Chaos Space Marines - Veteran Specialist - Bolter, Bolt Pistol, Frag and Krack Grenades -12 Points. Arngbaal has been fighting for many lifetimes of mortals and has honed her skills to absolute perfection.

Zothirag, Chaos Space Marines - Demolitions Specialist - Bolter, Bolt Pistol, Frag and Krack Grenades -12 points. Zoithirag is deranged; giggling and singing dark daemonic rhymes, he appears utterly insane.

Frexxor the Bold, Chaos Cultist Leader - Shotgun - 5 points

Chazmaz, Chaos Cultist Gunner - Heavy Specialist - Heavy Stubber - 5 points. Chazmaz is an unstoppable force; Brutish and monstrous, he blasts through everything in his path.

Molnier, Chaos Cultist - Autopistol, Brutal Assault Weapon - 4 points

Fezwhid, Chaos Cultist - Autopistol, Brutal Assault Weapon - 4 points

The rest are all regular Chaos Cultists with Autoguns.

Kazmort, Chaos Cultist - Autogun - 4 points

Kyphis, Chaos Cultist - Autogun - 4 points

Zhoritus, Chaos Cultist - Autogun - 4 points

Sephuraz, Chaos Cultist - Autogun - 4 points

Drachraz, Chaos Cultist - Autogun - 4 points

Vusour, Chaos Cultist - Autogun - 4 points

Mortemek, Chaos Cultist - Autogun - 4 points

Largall, Chaos Cultist - Autogun - 4 points

99 points in all... as soon as some gain new levels, the team will lose some cultists, but whatevs...

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

Game Reports? Seriously. It's a long weekend. We have nothing planned. I really need to get some games in as ToonCon is just a WEEK away!!!

After that...? I am still working on and Adeptus Mechanicus Kill Team. I hope I can finish it up early next week and get to play it a few times before next weekend.
