January Games

Saturday, 1 January 2022

Kicking the gaming off on the first, Finnegan had his regular Saturday D&D game - with a friend that had had to drop out as she'd moved away in September for school, but was back visiting family for the Holidaze!

In the evening our friends Brent and Barb and Kurtis all came over to play a few games.

First we played a game of Marrying Mr. Darcy.

I ended up playing Georgianna Darcy, again, and eloped with Mr Wickham. Eloping with Mr. Wickham isn't the WORST thing for Georgianna - he's tied for her second choice... the worst part was losing all the reputation I'd acquired (+6) in hopes of gaining the attentions of Colonel Fitzwilliam (my first choice). Because of this, I ended up dead last...

It was Caroline Bingley (played by Brent) who ended up with Colonel Fitzwilliam. Kitty Bennet (played by Amanda) ended up marrying Mr. Bingley. Elizabeth Bennet (played by Kurtis) did marry Mr. Darcy. Jane Bennet (played by Bard) ended up being the most accomplished and well married - to Mr. Denny - and won with 28 points!

Next we played Wingspan.

End of round bonuses are a bit more important in a five-player game (compared to the many, many two-player games Amanda and I have played. if you happen to get NONE of them, that's ZERO points. If you happen to win all of them, that's 22 points - which is a bit more of a difference than the 12 you would be ahead if you won all of them in a two-player game.

This was my tableau at the end, I was pretty excited to FILL the board. I was worried that doing so used up so many eggs it would put me way behind the others who mostly gained eggs for the last few rounds... The last two I played were the Eastern Turtle Dove and Black-Tailed Godwit (the latter being placed with the End of Game ability of the Grey-Headed Mannikin). The bonus cards I gained from those added 15 to my end-game total - which catapulted me into first place!

Afterwards I watched Death to 2021 with the family and then started watching Bridgerton with Amanda.

Finnegan turned 18 today...

For his birthday celebration he arranged an evening one-shot Dungeon Crawl Classics adventure involving most of the players from his regular Wednesday D&D group and his regular Saturday D&D Group, plus a player that had been in his Saturday game for years, but moved away for school in the fall (but was back for the holidaze and had not yet returned to school). There were six players in total, each made up a family of four (of which one want their MAIN Character) which were families in a village that was currently being terrorized by werewolves. Yeah... it was kind of a mash-up of Dungeon Drawl Classics and Werewolves of Millers Hollow (except none of the players knew who the werewolves were) Finnegan picked a couple from among the players family members. Each player also had to determine a reason for why each family member might sneak out of their house at night... Murder, investigations, accusations, and hangings ensued...

The cake I made. It was his request - anyone know what it's supposed to be?

There was also pizza.

I have to admit, there was considerable anxiety surrounding this event, with the rising number of Covid cases... there were a number of times we just considered cancelling it... or moving it online... or just doing in in a month or two when things settled down.

In the end we went ahead with it. All the kids are fully vaccinated. Most of them all go to school together anyway (we are the only province in Canada that did NOT delay opening of schools).

The day after this we started getting DAILY reports from Keiran's school (where most of these kids go) about which classes had had a positive covid test reported. The list got longer every day. by the following week, these guys had all made the decision to go back to playing on Roll20/Discord.

Friday, 7 January 2022

Despite talking about playing it all week, Finnegan and I didn't get to playing The Silver Bayonet until Friday... but we did get to it finally, so that's Okay, I guess...

This was our first try at a competitive game. Finnegan played Captain Black, leading a shore party from the Royal Navy's HMS Albatros. I played Capitaine Leblanc and a shore party of the French Navy's Canard Noir!

There is a full game report of the action here:

Silver Bayonet: Somewhere in the South Pacific

Saturday, 8 January 2022

In the afternoon Finnegan ran his last in person D&D game for a while. In the evening I got together with some of the Saturday RPG guys for a chat.

We didn't PLAY anything... just got caught up and talked about possibly starting a NEW campaign on Sundays later in the month... All while I was working on painting Chickadees

Friday, 14 January 2022

Friday night Amanda and i played Carcassonne.

It was a pretty close game, but Amanda won.

Sunday, 16 January 2022

Sunday evening I met with the guys I used to play RPGs with on Saturday, to start a NEW campaign on a new evening. Originally this Sunday was supposed to be Graphic Novel Book Club and making characters was supposed to be the following Sunday... but things kind of got switched at the last minute.

All made characters for Wrath & Glory (the Warhammer 40,000 role-playing game from Cubicle 7). They are playing Tier One Imperial Guard - specifically a Leman Russ tank crew of the 451st Tallarn Tank Regiment stationed on Xoxigar Secundus - the setting for most of my 40k/Kill Team games for the last few year - and even the previous Wrath & Glory game!

CVT is playing Sgt. Tasha El Shae - Tank Commander

Jon is playing Pte. Ekram Khalid - Gunner

Woody is Playing Pte. Abdula al Muharib Hadidi - Driver

There aren't actually vehicle rules for Wrath & Glory just yet (though they are forthcoming in the recently announced Church of Steel) so I am just bodging something together - mixing in bits of Wrath & Glory, Only War, and 40K and/or Apocalypse. I might just use 40K Apocalypse for keeping track of other elements in a battle...? We shall see.

And... that was about it.

I've been busy with other distractions... Birbs... Riding bikes...

Maybe wasting a little too much time on instagram or twitter...

Maybe next month will be better.

I feel like my interests are shifting and i want to get back to playing some 40k.

I have been painting a little bit. Mostly just rebasing some 40K Eldar. They do have a new Codex coming out! AND the next Kill Team box is rumoured to have Eldar Corsairs and some kind of Chaos Kill Team (please let it be noisemarines! PLEASR LET IT BE NOISE MARINES! ideally followed by an Emperor's Children Codex!!)

Ugh... I thought I was OFF this hype train... seems I just had a layover in Silver Bayonet Station and back on the train...

December Games - Part The Third

We played a LOT of games in the first two weeks of December. Even more in the Third Week of December. Here's what we got up to for the last week...

We played games on more days that we didn't! Yay!

Christmas Day

It was a pretty low-key day. We'd already opened the few presents earlier in the week on the solstice. We slept in. I spent the afternoon painting miniatures and going for a bike ride. After that we played a few quick games of Codenames: Pictures while waiting for supper.

Round One, I was partnered with Amanda and Keiran was partnered with Finnegan. Keiran and I were teh Spy Masters. They won, because Amanda accidentally selected the assassin...

Round Two were the same teams, but Finnegan and Amanda were the Spy Masters. This time Amanda and I won...

For Round Three we switched up the pairings - I was partnered with Finnegan and Keiran with Amanda. Amanda and Finnegan remained Spy Masters.  Finnegan and I won this one.

For Round Four, we had the same teams, but Keiran and I were the Spy Masters. Amanda and Keiran won. Amanda and Keiran won.

Originally we'd planned to play one of the Railways of the World on this day. It had been Keiran's suggestion... but then they bailed on the day.

Everyone indulged me to play these four quick games, just so I could add Codenames: Pictures to the 10x10 challenge list.... it seemed kind of "cheap and easy"... but we played a LOT of games this year. and some of those other games on the 10x10 list were played a LOT MORE than ten times... so I substituted this one in as I thought it unlikely I was going to finish up a few more games of... whatever else I'd been thinking were going to go on that list...? Necromunda...?

There had been plans to play games on Sunday... but everyone was feeling a little tired and maybe starting to feel a little "gamed out".

Monday, 27 December 2021

The games did resume on Monday though...

Finnegan and I played a quick game of Kill Team, Monday evening.

A full report and way more pictures can be found in the After Action Report, here:

Kill Team: Relic Recovered

Wednesday, 29 December 2021

Our friend Kurtis came over to play a few games Wednesday evening.

We started off with Marrying Mr. Darcy. I forget to take a pic during the game.... so all you get is the box...

Kurtis played Charlotte Lucas, I played Georgiana Darcy, and Amanda played Mary Bennet. Charlotte eloped with my brother Mr. Darcy early in the game and ended up winning with 22 points. I managed to land Mr. Denny - I just didn't have enough Reputation to tempt Colonel Fitzwilliam - I totally COULD have married Mr. Wickham... but that just seemed WRONG... It would have meant two more points... but I... I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Poor Mary put all her hopes into Mr. Collins, who passed her by and she ended up and Old Maid and a companion to a mean old lady...

Afterwards we played a game of Wingspan.

Amanda and Kurtis tied at 96 - but Amanda had more food leftover, so she took the win.

I was only two points behind at 94.

It always amazes me how we all end up SO CLOSE in points - despite going about it all in very different ways and scoring wildly different amounts of points in different categories!?

Thursday, 30 December 2021

Despite it being rather chilly out this day...

Yeah... that says -47°C windchill....

I got out to the Dragon's Den on the last day of their Boxing Week Sale.

I think this is the smallest Boxing Day/Week haul EVER from the Dragon's Den.

The Mutant Crawl Classics was the only impulse buy - and it's for Finnegan's Birthday (next week! I'd never even heard of it, but I know he is a HUGE fan of Dungeon Crawl Classics - having run a few campaigns and a few more one-shot adventures. The rest was just general hobby supplies I needed and figures I might as well grab them while it was 20% off. Wasn't really even TEMPTED to buy anything else...

Okay... I was BRIEFLY tempted to pick up the new Twilight: 2000 box from Free League... but it was a bit much for a game I doubt I'd ever get around to actually playing. The first edition was one of my favourite - and most played games - of my high school years... I STILL HAVE a pile of stuff for that, which I could totally use (though I'd use a different system - Savage Worlds... or FATE...?)

I also got in my tenth game of the new Kill Team - running Amanda through her first game with the old Crimson Wave Wych Kult

Full Report and loads of pictures of that action can be found here:

Kill Team - Drukhari Ambush

Friday, 31 December 2021

New year's eve... Kids didn't seem intersted in a game when I talked with them the night before, so Amanda and i set up a game and started before they even got up. At 1pm. Because Teenagers.

We played one last game of Terraforming Mars on Hellas with Prelude

Amanda played Cheung Shing Mars with Mining Operations and Ecological Experts. Took Energizer Milestone and Cultivator and Contractor Awards.. Just crushed it - ending the game with 120 points.

I played Saturn Systems with Aquifer Turbines and Polar Industries. Took Diversifier and Rim Settler milestones... I ended with 100 points.

This evening we're planning to watch Cobra Kai Season

And that wraps up December and 2021, I guess....

Thanks for popping in, I hope you all have a fabulous, healthy and game-filled new year!

Next I'll be posting a little Look Back at 2021 - I'll let you know there how the 10x10 Challenge worked out.

November Games - Part II

Didn't get in QUITE as many games in the second two weeks of November as we did in the first two.. but still... games were played. Fun was had.

Thursday, 18 November 2021

On Thursday Finnegan and I tried out The Silver Bayonet for the first time.

There is a full game report with more pictures, you can read it here:

The Silver Bayonet - Wolf Pack

Friday, 19 November 2021

Friday evening Amanda suggested Terraforming Mars, again.

! just could not get stuff together to grab ANY of the milestones.

And hardly got any cards out... well... compared to what Amanda put in play!? Despite that, I was only trailing by about 16 points - I was way ahead of her in Terraforming Rating and managed to get a lot more cities and greenery on the planet...

This was our 10th game this year - so we don't NEED to play anymore... also it was the 43rd play of all time... still like playing it. Mostly...

Monday, 22 November 2021

I'd hoped to get more games in over the weekend - and Sunday had started to be our Warhammer Underworlds night again... but then movies (Red Notice and Free Guy) and TV (The Great!) and Book Clubs happened and we didn't get any games in.

Amanda did have Monday off so after doing a few errands we sat down to play a game of Warhammer Underworlds: Night Vault!

There is, as always, a complete game report with loads of pictures here:

Warhammer Underworlds: Nightvault - Stormsire and Lady Harrow

This was, officially, the tenth game we've played in the Nightvault of Shadespire... and so that's another game that I've played ten times this year! Woo!

Next year I'll probably just start logging all the Warhammer Underworlds games at Warhammer Underworlds: Harrowdeep...

I guess I better get painting THOSE warbands! And Elathain's Soulraid! Harrowdeep seems like just the sort of place THEY'D be hanging out!

Over the next day, or so , I actually DID some stocktaking of all the Warhammer Underworlds warbands...

BLACK FRIDAY

I did go to my FLGS and picked up a few things. Warhammer Underworlds terrain (Arcane Hazzards for NightVault and Primal Lair for Beastgrave - they look like they'll work as interesting scatter terrain bits for other games as well!) and the latest White Dwarf... That's it...

I had thought of picking up Stargrave... but they were sold out. I looked for Rangers of Shadowdeep or Five Parsecs from Home - a couple other games I've been thinking out - also didn't have any. I EVEN looked for a single Gloomspite Gits Leader - either the Fungoid Cave-Shaman or possibly the Loon Boss... (for... REASONS!)... but, nope... So not much there.

I did break down and pick up the Rangers of Shadowdeep PDF later in the day as it was on sale at Drive-Thru RPG. My printer died printing it off... It was on it's last... whatever - we've probably had it for the better part of a decade... but it finally gave up the ghost just as I was printing the last few pages... The last 20-30 pages are crap... I'll probably reprint them when we get a new printer.

I also picked up some stuff from the HPL Historical Society (as they were having a Solstice Sale - a little EARLY!?). Actually, that was the night before, now that I think about it...

AND I ordered some Regency Zombie Hunters from MiniFigs/Matchlock Miniatures... but they weren't even on sale...

Later in the evening, Amanda and I played Castles of Burgundy.

I actually filled all my pastures, which, I almost rarely EVER do!? Amanda almost always scoops up the critters and I grab buildings... But Friday's game was almost the entire opposite.

SHE was grabbing all the buildings right off the start to try and fill a large section of her map that needed them.

Sunday, 28 November 2021

Sunday evening Amanda and I played Marrying Mr. Darcy. Amanda played Georgiana Darcy and I played Elizabeth Bennett.

Georgiana Darcy ended up marrying colonel Fitzwillaim and Elizabeth Bennett married Georgiana's brother Mr. Darcy.

We BOTH ended up tying a twenty-six points in total, but Georgiana had a higher dowry (Tie-breaker #1), so Amanda won.

It's okay as a two-player game, but I recall it being way more fun with more players. Especially players who are fans of Jane Austen! I did ask the rest of the family if they were interested, but they were more interested in electronic devices...

Kids these days, amirite?

And that's about it for November...

Looking at my 10x10 Challenge Plays to Date:

  1. Wingspan 27
  2. Retro Loonacy 12
  3. Warhammer Underworlds: Direchasm 12
  4. Azul 11
  5. Century: Golem Edition – An Endless World 10
  6. Kingdom Builder 10
  7. Terraforming Mars 10
  8. Warhammer Underworlds: Nightvault 10
  9. Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team 8
  10. Necromunda 6

So we got to at least ten for everything except Kill Team and Necromunda. Getting in two more games of Kill Team in December shouldn't be a problem. Four more games of Necromunda might be a bit more tricky... I've almost been thinking it might be easier to get in nine more games of The Silver Bayonet, or six to eight games of... something else we've played a few games of so far this year...

  • Castles of Burgundy (4 plays, so far - need to play 6)?
  • Kingdomino(3/7)?
  • Carcassonne (2/8)?
  • Splendor (2/8)?
  • 7 Wonders Duel (1!)
  • Dominion (1!)?
  • Just Desserts (1!)?
  • Lords of Waterdeep (1!)?
  • Viticulture (1!)?
  • MARRYING MR. DARCY!? (1!)

Finnegan and I are pretty keen to play some more of The Silver Bayonet... I guess we'll see how the first week or two goes... The kids have the last two weeks off, surely I can talk them into playing a few games then? We already have plans to play Wingspan again next Monday. I'm sure we'll end up with THIRTY games of that before the end of the year! I think there was one more Centruy Golem Edition combination that we hadn't played (all three?), so we'll likely get in one more game of that.

December 2019 Games

PART ONE - BEFORE the HOLIDAZE

December got off to a slow start...

But there was enough stuff going on that I'm going to separate this month into two parts: pre-Holidaze, and HOLIDAZE! As HOLIDAZE officially begins this afternoon, this is what we got up to so far this month...

Sunday, 1 December 2019

I did kick off the month with a game of Necromunda..

Brent came by and tried the game out. You can read all about the game here:

El-Akarm Market Massacre

I'd hoped that this would be an EVERY SUNDAY thing... but have only gotten in games two of the four Sundays (so far!) this month. On the 8th we all had tickets to ELF! The Musical at the Persephone Theatre. All their musicals are just wonderful...

And Finnegan did get in a bunch of D&D games...

There was his bi-weekly Tuesday game on the 3rd (of which the last few sessions had been cancelled for one reason or another, so this was the first time they'd gotten together in over a month)

Friday, 6 December 2019

Friday evening he ran a one-shot for a friend and his son and the son of ANOTHER friend while Amanda and I were out. (This and all his D&D games aren't on the calendar above, because I don't log HIS games - not the ones I'm not playing in, at least!)

Saturday, 7 December 2019

Saturday afternoon he ran his regular game...

There was an epic sea battle/boarding action - which required busting out my half-built ships...

It looked like everyone was having fun.

Friday, 13 December 2019

The weekend of Friday the 13th is when things really got going for us...

well...

sort of...

Brent and Barb came by for supper and games. We ended up playing three rounds of Marrying Mr. Darcy - which was really fun, because I don't think we've gotten to play that all year..?

In the first round I played Lizzy Barret - but did NOT get to marry Mr. Darcy because my absolutely horrid sister, Jane (played by Barb), stole him away early in the game with a surprise engagement and I was left with Mr. Denny... Amanda played Georgiana Darcy - and married Mr. Wickham - much to the horror of her brother! Brent played my dear friend Charlotte Lucas, who did very well for herself and married Colonel Fitzwilliam! (Barb won the game - with 25 points)

In the second game I played Georgiana Darcy and (AGAIN!) she was wed to Mr. Wickham - with a scandalous elopement! I thought I did very well for myself scoring 27 points! But I was edged out by Barb, who again won - with 29 points! She'd been playing Elizabeth Barret and DID get to marry my brother, Mr. Darcy! It was a SUPER tight game, though - Amanda also scored 27 points - playing Lydia Barret and marrying Mr. Denny, and Brent was only just behind us with 26 points - having played Caroline Bingley and marrying Colonel Fitzwilliam!

In the third round we played with the Emma expansion. I have not read Emma - and am not terribly familiar with the story... (I feel like I HAVE read Pride and Prejudice... I know I've read one or two of Austen's books at one point or another... but mostly I remember the movie - with Keira Knightly -  and a stage play that was put on by a local theatre company a couple years ago). I played Harriet Smith, Amanda played Miss Bates, Brent played Anne Taylor, and Barb Played Emma Woodhouse. Now, this was just the first time we played it... but it seemed a just little like Emma really had things stacked in her favour... maybe it was just how all the cards played out...? I'll have to watch for that in future games and, if it happens again, know that the others really need to keep a watch on her and GANG UP!!!

As it turns out both Amanda and I ended up OLD MAIDS, scoring 15 and 23 points respectively (Miss Bates, played by Amanda - actually gets a few bonus points if she ends up an old maid - other wise we'd have been a bit close!) Brent managed to get Anne Taylor married off to Mr. Elton - and scored 21 points. But Barb won big, again, marrying Emma off to a certain Mr. knightly for a whopping 32 points!

I'd forgotten how fun this game can be - especially if playing with other people that are really INTO IT! We'll have to try and get this into more regular rotation!

Still haven't tried out the Undead expansion!

Saturday, 14 December 2019

Finnegan ran his regular D&D game in the afternoon. This week it was ALL THE GIRLS!? The party continued their journey by sea to the Island where the entire campaign is to reach it's ultimate conclusion.

In the evening, we had more friends over for supper and games. This time Amanda had invited one of her co-workers, Kathleen, and her sister Maureen.

We started off teaching them to play 7 Wonders. I played Babylone, Kathleen played Ephesos, Amanda played Giza, and Maureen played Rhodes. Maureen was just crushing it with the military - I totally thought she might win her very first game!

But then... SCIENCE! It really adds up!! I ended up winning - by just a few points (55). Amanda and Maureen were tied at 48, and Kathleen was just a bit behind at 37

WE played again and I decided to try something new - Stonehenge! I've never played it before. Amanda and Kathleen just flipped their Wonder cards and played on the B side and maureen just played Rhodes A again.

Stonehenge is kind of interesting... and tricky. When I pointed out that the third stage of my wonder gave me points for every stone I had (which, for some reason, didn't actually help me BUILD any part of my wonder!? Stonehenge is built of clay, Wood, Ore Papyrus and textiles, I guess...?) I guess everyone decided to not let me get any Stone - they also burried or discarded any science that came their way, suspecting I might do science again (seriously, there was hardly ANY science out there at the end of the game). I still won... well... tied with Amanda at 49. Kathleen was at 34 and Maureen was at 28 this time! (Both Amanda and I built up some actual military this time!)

Still, seemed like they really enjoyed it and were even talking about picking it up for themselves!

Afterwards we played Marrying Mr. Darcy - which is always great fun - but even more fun when people are really into it, and Maureen is a Jane Austen fan! I played Jane Bennet and Maureen played my sister Elizabeth. Kathleen played Lizzie's friend Charlotte Lucas, and Amanda played Caroline Bingley. Early in the game I had an elopement Mr. Wickham - which I got out of by discarding a pile of Character cards, I then was offered a surprise proposal from Mr. Darcy... which is stupidly TURNED DOWN, thinking I might still have a chance at landing the lovely Mr. Bingley! In the end I married... Mr. Collins.... Ended the game with a grand total of 15 points...

Amanda did even worse with Caroline Bingley - she ended up an Old Maid after turning down Mr. Wickham and scored only 13. Kathleen, playing Charlotte Lucas managed to marry Mr. Denny and scored 18 points. Maureen was the big winner landing Mr. Darcy and scoring 37 points!!! THIRTY SEVEN!!! Almost as much as the rest of us combined!!

I don't know why we don't play this game more!

Seriously, if you know any Jane Austen fans that don't really play games, but you'e LIKE them to start playing games - THIS is the one to get them playing!

Sunday, 15 December 2019

I actually had THREE people come over to play necromunda on Sunday evening!? You can read all about that game here:

The Ratskin Hoarde

Friday, 20 December 2019

Not a game, per se, but game-nerdy and mostly game buddies were invited... The kids and I Performed our Second (Hopefully) Annual Very Scary Solstice Concert (okay, it TECHNICALLY wasn't solstice until Saturday, but the kids wanted to do it Friday night so they could play their D&D game on Saturday without me rushing around like a Mad Bastard trying to clean up things around them...)

The concert is basically a bunch of traditional Xmas Carols arranged for two violins and a cello, with... alternative lyrics... based on the writings of Howard Phillip Lovecraft. A couple years ago we bought CDs and Song Books from the HPL Historical Society.

Last year we did two concerts - one Very Scary Solstice Concert and a second one two days later for people interested in singing traditional carols. The first was well attended and quite a riot - people singing and laughing. Only my family showed up for the second... and my sister wouldn't even sing. So the kids decided they only wanted to do ONE concert this year.

Some homemade cookies baked just for the occasion.

Cthulhu Cookies - Made by Keira.

Elder Sign Cookies - also made by Keira.

Us, playing the concert.

Over TWENTY people showed up and crammed themselves into our living and dining rooms. We ended up having to set up in the space between the two rooms - which was a little bit awkward... but worked out well enough in the end.

Again it was a riot of laughter and singing. I hope I can convince the kids to do it again next year!

Saturday, 21 December

Finnegan ran the final session in his D&D5E campaign that he's been running every Saturday since the beginning of September. All but one was able to make it! (He's actually been running RPGs for this group since the beginning of January - but it was Dungeon Crawl Classics to start with).

I think he originally intended for the campaign to run a little longer, but recognized there were some major problems with how was going and the group dynamic and after much thinking and postulating and bouncing ideas off of me, he decided to wrap it up - HARD REBOOT! Start again in the new year.

He had, briefly, even considered trying a completely new game system in the new year, but had decided to stick with D&D for now...

the final showdown with the big boss baddies.

It was pretty epic.

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

In a week and a bit I'll have December Games Part Two - a wrap up of the rest of the month. Also around that time I'll have my traditional retrospective - looking back at the last year. Also I've been doing a lot of planning for 2020 - or, at least, the First Quarter of it! I also still have three posts about three of the Necromunda gangs I still need to finish up and post!? In addition to all that, I've been painting up Hellboy Miniatures - and am almost done enough to start playing TOMORROW!!!

For those celebrating Xmas today and tomorrow... and possibly the rest of the week - I hope you all have a very merry one. For those that aren't - I hope you all have an equally fabulous week/rest of your year!
