A little terrain project I've been thinking about for years and finally started working on...
These are the first three of a series of modular cavern terrain tiles I've been working on. (Looks like I need to touch up that black a bit...?).
I've cut bases and sides for sixteen or seventeen 30cm x 30cm square and three or four 30cm x 60cm. This will give me enough to easily fill a 120cm x 120cm board (~4'x4') - with some options - for a decent sized skirmish.
I could use them for just about any setting from dungeon-bashing-fantasy to science-fi - but as I'm sick to death of fantasy stuff, I've been mostly thinking of sci-fi scenarios as I build them up.
As they are uniform in size, my plan is to cut a bunch of 30mmx30mm cardboard squares so that I could cover them all up and potentially have players only reveal squares as they move into them.
I was going to build a ladder for the Dead End tile so it could be used as an entry tile.
Stay tuned as I hope to finish these up over the next month or so and have it as an option for a skirmish campaign I hope to launch in the new year.
I wasn't sure if I should do the walls and the floor the same colour. I ended up deciding to do them different - mostly for a bit of contrast. I'm not totally sure if I'm going to keep them this way.

Looking good! I like the contrasting colours.
ReplyDeleteThanks Preacher!
DeleteVery nice! I like the contrast as well.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dan!
DeleteLooking good Tim! But are these mm or cm? 30mm = 3cm, which is just over 1". With the black flat tops I can almost see you doing some multi-level stuff too with rock slides to get down...or stone steps, the possibilities are endless!
ReplyDeleteYou are right, it should be cm - I've edited it - thanks!
DeleteYeah, in a previous incarnation of this I did some steps, and will likely do the same for these as well. I can always add to the stuff I've cut once they're all done. Ideally I'd like to have enough for two or three 4'x4' tables to run a weekend campaign - or just some really, REALLY BIG dungeon crawls.
And, yes, I was thinking of doing a few with trapdoors in the floor that could lead to lower levels...
DeleteThe cavern squares look great! The dirt floor works fine - maybe more like what you'd get closer to the surface/entrance as dirt gets tracked in or blown in? Painting the floors to match the walls could work, too. Either way is good. The main thing is they look good and look useful for a variety of scenarios and genres.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteI'm pretty stoked to get more of these finished so we can try them out - at least nine - then I could set up a 3x3 grid which would be good for a small starter scenario.
I've even had megalomaniacal daydreams about playing 40K on these - obviously tanks and other vehicles and such wouldn't work - only infantry - but all of my forces are mostly infantry-based, so...
They are really good!
ReplyDeleteThanks Prufrock!
DeleteReally nice and I have to say I think they work fine as they are as far as colours go.
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Thanks Iain!
DeleteGreat work! I can see these being useful for many things.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jonathan!
DeleteCracking stuff! Looking forward to seeing the full table. If this is anything to go by it'll be a corker.
ReplyDeleteThanks Millsy!
DeleteI do like them. I prefer the contrast but its a tough call. Seems like it should be close to the wall color. Test paint one another way? Can you create contrast in other ways? Nice work! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteCheers! They're growing on me the way they are. I think I'll leave them.
DeleteThey look great Tim...the colours work well and I think a trapdoor or two would be outstanding...I saw an article a few years back in Wargames Illustrated about doing something similar in an urban setting and I've toyed with the idea using some old cast-off IKEA shelves as the board pieces...can't wait to see more of your idea come to life. Well done.
ReplyDeleteThanks Stanley!
