A Little Visit to the Den

It's been mighty cold in Saskatoon the last few weeks. Before that I had a cold and hadn't been going out as much... so when the temperature plummeted, I was already in the habbit of not-going-out-so-much and just continued with that for the next two weeks!? I've barely left the house unless absolutely necessary!  I used to think nothing at all about bundling up and going for a bike ride in -40 weather... but now...

It's been daytime HIGH temperatures in the mid to low -20s°C - but with windchill making it feel like the -30s (or lower)... The last -40 day was Tuesday...

It seems bonkers that we had weeks of -30/-40 weather... and then a couple of days later it is melting!? The forecast was not wrong... It was very nice on Friday and I finally got around to heading over to Dragon's Den games to pick up the copy of the new Codex:Aeldari that they'd been holding for me almost two weeks since it's release!

Of course, while I was there... I picked up some other things...

They had FINALLY gotten in the Warbands of Embergard set of cards for Warhammer Underworlds!! Now I have access to ALL the cards for warbands that I have! Yay!

Also, they happened to have a copy of Five Parsecs from Home: Tactics! which I ended up picking up because... I do like Five Parsecs from Home and I really, REALLY WOULD like to get back to that little campaign I started... um... well over a year ago now!?

I also picked up some paint I was desperately needing to get painting some ARMOUR!!! (I'll be posting some of those a bit later!?)

I've finished the Autoblinda AB41 and made some serious headway with the rest of the Italian armour! I'll post some better pictures later today...

Game Plan 2024 - Q4

We are three-quarters of the way through the year! Where did the time go!?

As with the last few Quarterly Plans, I'm not here to make any hard and fast PLANS, per se… Just set some general intentions which I will look back in 3 months, without judgement, and see what I DID manage to do! Did I do the things I said I would…? Did I do something completely different (but still SOMETHING!?)

What DID I plan for this past quarter? What DID I end up doing? You can see the plan here:

Game Plan 2024 - Q3

As for what I did manage to get up to...

GAMES

Things were a bit slower over the summer... I'd like to say it was because I was getting out lots and going for long rides and just generally enjoying the outdoors... instead it was HOT and SMOKEY and I didn't get out much at all... People were just busy with other things.

Here is what I got to playing in the last three months...

  • Warhammer Age Of Sigmar (Fourth Edition) x7
  • Warhammer Quest: Shadows Over Hammerhal x4
  • Warhammer Underworlds: Deathgorge x4
  • NMBR 9 x2
  • Betrayal at House on the Hill x1
  • Carcassonne x1
  • Dixit x1
  • Five Men in Normandy .30 Cal edition x1
  • Warhammer 40,000 (Tenth Edition) x1

Total: 22 games!

Yiiiiiikes... that's like half the games I played in each of the other quarters so far...

Here's what we've played so far this year:

  • Warhammer Underworlds: Deathgorge x75
  • Warhammer 40,000 (Tenth Edition) x7
  • Warhammer Age Of Sigmar (Fourth Edition): Core Rules x7
  • Splendor x4
  • Warhammer Quest: Shadows Over Hammerhal x4
  • NMBR 9 x2
  • Wingspan x2
  • Abyss x1
  • Betrayal at House on the Hill x1
  • Carcassonne x1
  • Castles of Mad King Ludwig x1
  • Century: Golem Edition x1
  • Dixit x1
  • Five Men in Normandy .30 Cal edition x1
  • The Hanging Gardens x1
  • Lacuna x1
  • Mysterium x1
  • RoboRally x1
  • SET 1
  • Stone Age x1
  • Tokaido x1
  • Wingspan Asia x1
  • Wyrmspan x1

Total: 117 games!?

That's a little better... Hopefully Q4 will be better still!

Role-Playing Games

STILL havent' managed to get a role-playing game going... maybe by the end of the year!?

Solo/Co-op Games

We DID, finally, start playing Warhammer Quest! There have been some hiccups and a LOT of cancelled games... and we did not get nearly as far as I'd hoped... (I'd had this idea that we'd be DONE Shadows over Hammerhal and well into The Silver Tower by now...) It was all very disappointing. There has been noise about getting it going again in October... But Amanda will be out for the first two weeks as she's heading off to a course and a short vacation.

Still have a LOT to do to finish up all the Cursed City miniatures (having been thoroughly distracted by Age of Sigmar 4th Edition and Spearhead!)... but it doesn't seem like there's much of a need to rush... Or... Maybe there is... Maybe I'm just going to have to play through that one on my own...

I DID however pick up a new game from Nic Wright called Devilry Afoot that I've been getting things ready for...

And I DID just start playing a little solo campaign of Five Men in Normandy!

So... there's that...

Board Games

There was a hiccup around the beginning of July and Board Game Night fell off my radar and no one else brought it up and it kind of died…

Miniature Games

I bought Warhammer Age of Sigmar Skaventide in July - my first ever core release of one of GW's Flagship games!? And I have been thoroughly distracted from all previous plans (Warhammer Underworlds, Warhammer Quest). I got VERY excited about the Spearhead format of play - smaller, fixed lists... there was an element of it that reminded me of DBA...

I managed to paint THREE full Spearhead armies (Hedonites of Slaanesh, Blades of Khorne, and Sylvaneth) and played in the Spearhead at the local Warhammer Store (though that only amounted to six games... and I played one other at home with Orion one night...)

Also... I managed to acquire FOUR MORE Spearhead armies, which I HAVEN'T finished painting (Skaven, Stormcast, Daughters of Khaine, and Soulblight Gravelords!?)

(I had most of the Daughters of Khaine army already, I just needed two units... which I picked up in a deeply discounted battle box... along with a deeply discounted Starter box from 3rd Edition...)

Oh, and I picked up a Dark Oath Army box...

And Hargax's Pit Beasts...

Yeah, shit got a little out of control this past Quarter.

Warhammer Underworlds

I still played a few games of Warhammer Underworlds! Things have definitely slowed down though. Like, a LOT! Part of that is a general slow down in the community as everyone has been distracted by the new edition of Age of Sigmar and the new Spearhead format of play! I've played FOUR GAMES this past Quarter!? Compared to the SEVENTY-ONE games I'd played in the first half of the year!?

Tournaments/Conventions

There was a small Warhammer Underworlds tournament at The Warhammer Store at the very beginning of the Quarter. Both Amanda and I went.

Warhammer Underworlds: Rivals Event

MINIATURES

Acquisitions

In previous plans I'd done acquisitions as an afterthough... AFTER the section about what I actually got painted. This time around I've decided to do Acquisitions first... because... things went a little overboard... but then it gives me a chance, in the painting section, to go over what, of all that, I managed to actually PAINT!?

Initially I’d thought I’d get the Skaventide box and sell off the Stormcast AND Skaven and just keep the rules and board and cards and terrain for spearhead… but by the time it was actually released I’d decided that Spearhead was going to be super fun and I was cranking through models very quickly and it was decided I’d at least keep the Spearhead forces of both Stormcast and Skaven and maybe sell off or trade away the extras… But so far I’ve not done that either. I’ve assembled most/all of the Stormcast... I have wavered on whether or not to keep Skaven.

THEN I bought a Soulblight Gravelords box (telling myself that I needed the Vampire Lord for Cursed City anyway)…

(adding to the Soulblight army box that I'd bought a few weeks earlier at the end of June -because I had a Soulblight army now… and the bats were needed for Cursed City)…

And then Hargax's Pit-Beasts... for... REASONS!?

and then MORE BOXES that were deeply discounted and gave me MORE terrain and the models I needed to finish up a Daughters of Khaine Spearhead force…

and then the Darkoath Army Set…

Also, in the middle of all that nonsense, I made a MAJOR trade - I gave away my three 40K Knights in trade for an entire Blades of Khorne Age of Sigmar army!?

In total I acquired:

28mm Foot Figures

Total: 282 x28mm miniatures and

Yeah.. that was a bit much… But also...

28mm Mounted or Smaller Beasties!

Total: 32 x 28mm Mounted miniatures or Smaller Beasties

28mm BIG Beasties/Vehicles

Terrain

Little Bits/Markers/Tokens

Medium Terrain Bits

Total: 10

Painting

The Plan was to finish painting the Hedonites of Slaanesh Vanguared Box, so I'd be ready to play Spearhead when the new edition of Warhammer Age of Sigmar was released...

...and I DID do that!!

Beyond that, the plan was to just carry on painting up Warhammer Underworlds warbands and Warhammer Quest stuff - and mix in some more of the other Warhammer Age of Sigmar models that I had (Daemons of Slaanesh and Daughters of Khaine).

That changed quickly with the news of the new mode of play for the new edition of Warhammer Age of Sigmar - SPEARHEAD. I got a little TOO excited about that and Age of Sigmar in general and ended up acquiring a LOT of new minis - as detailed above... mostly purchased, but a good chunk just through trade...

Here is what I DID get to painting this past Quarter:

28mm Foot

Total: 88 x 28mm Foot

28mm Mounted/Smaller Beasties

Total; 13 x Mounted/Smaller Beasties

28mm BIG Beasties/Vehicles

Total: 1x Vehicles/ BIG Beasties

Little Bits/Markers/Tokens

Total: 4 x Little Bits/Markers/Tokens

Medium Terrain Bits

So... that's ONE Warhammer Underworlds warbands (totalling 5 minatures)...

But... I completed THREE spearhead armies completed totalling 54 miniatures (including eight mounted, and a GIGANTIC Treelord!?)

Miniature painting production Continues to pick up momentum this quarter! In the first quarter I only managed to paint 38 x28mm foot miniatures, Second Quarter I painted 76 x28mm foot miniatures, this Quarter I painted x28mm foot miniatures! So far this year, that's xx x28mm foot miniatures. In 2023 I painted only 66 x28mm foot miniatures in the entire year... In 2022, only 57 x28mm foot miniatures!?

So I DID get a Blades of Khorne Spearhead Army done (though there are still a LOT of Khorne Bloodbound to paint!)

I DID paint all of Hargax's Pit Beasts...

The Sylvaneth Spearhead Army

Disposals

I traded away three 40K knights - one completely painted, one mostly painted, one unassembled and on the sprue...

I traded/gave away a few other unpainted 28mm foot miniatures

GAME PLAN 2024 - Q3

GAMES

Well... things have slowed down over the summer, but there is no need for that trend to continue!!!

Using a lot of the same categories as previous Game Plans...

Solo/Co-op Games

This is one area that I'm hoping will take off this fall...

I hope we do get back to playing Warhammer Quest: Shadows Over Hammerhal...

I am DETERMINED to start Cursed City by the end of the year if I have to just start playing through it myself!? (Though it would be nice if I could at least get Amanda and/or Finnegan to play!?)

I don't know about Silver Tower... Maybe I'll get to that one next year...?

There are a number of other Solo/Co-op games I'd like to toy around with this fall/winter...

I'd love to pick up the Five Parsecs from Home campaign I'd started... AGES ago...

I'd like to continue the Five Men in Normandy campaign I just started.

I would REALLY LOVE to try out Devilry Afoot and maybe run a short campaign of that as well!

Or any of the other games from Nordic Weasel or Modiphius that I've picked up (Five Kilometres From Leipzig or Five Leagues from the Botherlands, etc)

Warhammer Underworlds

Interest in this has flagged a bit... maybe we'll get it going again in the fall...

It's surprising there hasn't been two more warbands for Wintermaw!? October is usually when the new "season" core release takes place?!

Age of Sigmar

There is talk of a Paths to Glory campaign at the Warhammer Store this fall... I am considering joining in on it... I am a little underwhelmed by the Paths to Glory system included in the Core Rules of Age of Sigmar 4th Edition (compared to the ones included in 3rd Edition...) but I'll give it a try.

Part of me has thought about coming up with something of my own to run... more like 3rd... or a Map campaign... but I've decided I should focus my own energies elsewhere.

Will there be more Spearhead...? I don't know... We'll see... Despite my initial excitement, I have to admit, I do not LOVE the game. I don't hate it... but it has a lot of the same problems a LOT of GW games have these days - the games feel more like a sporting event than any sort of combat simulation - having to constantly react to ever-changing nonsensical objectives each round... ugh...

Other Board Games

Wow... we have really not been playing board games much...

It would be nice to get some regular board game night going again... but I'm not holding my breath.

Other Miniature Games

Well I got a lot of solo and co-op miniature games planned... I'm not sure if I'll get to any others...

I guess I am interested in exploring options with games by Dan Mercy (Dragon Rampant, etc) and One Hour Wargames... but that may very likely be played solo...

I'd also love to return to Song of Blades and Heroes... but it's entirely likely that those games would be played as co-op or GM (me) versus players...

Role-Playing Games

Will THIS be the quarter that I FINALLY get a game of Soulbound going on...? I don't know... I sure hope so!

Tournaments/Conventions

I don't know of any coming up in Q4... not sure I'm interested in any.

Game Weekend

There was some brief chat about hosting a Game Weekend this fall... but that's all fallen by the wayside as no one in interested enough to actually commit to showing up any particular weekend.

MINIATURES

On the plus side, the miniature painting has drasticall increased over the year... unfortunately not as much as the miniature PURCHASING has increased... If I managed to keep pace with what i've painted this past quarter or two... I totally won't even be close to painting more than I've purchased... ah well, maybe next year!?

Painting

I will probably paint miniatures.

It feel foolhardy to try and decide, NOW, what I might paint over the next few months.

GENERALLY SPEAKING

I will probably paint stuff for Age of Sigmar - whether that is the fantasy battle game (either Spearhead OR Paths to Glory), or Warhammer Underworlds, or Warhammer Quest (Cursed City) or characters and encounters for the Soulbound role-playing game... there will be some stuff for that setting...

I have a feeling I'll paint some other stuff, too, though... whether for Devilry Afoot or any of those other solo games...

I also have a LOT of stuff I'm still slowly rebasing. It takes time - time away from painting NEW things (which is the main metric I seem to use to track "progress") but will ultimately make more miniatures available for games I might actually PLAY...!?

Acquisitions

There will likely be a few new things released for Warhammer Underworlds. If the pattern of the last few years is any indication, there should still be two expansion warbands for Wintermaw and a pair of rivals decks.... I may or may not pick the warbands up. I will probably pick up the decks.

The new starter box (which will be in a whole new setting - Mosscairn, in Ghyran - if the rumours are to be believed!) would normally be expected in October... but as we haven't seen the last of Wintermaw, it could be later in November...

I don't really NEED anything else...

There are a few things I've thought about as possible additions to Age of Sigmar armies I have that I could use in a Paths to Glory campaign... I should probably just do something SENSIBLE and run an army that I already HAVE loads of stuff for... like Blades of Khorne... I easily have over fifteen hundred points of stuff painted for that... maybe eighteen...?

If anything, I'd like to get a bit of terrain... maybe some cheap simple laser-cut stuff - Generic European row houses for urban combat... or maybe I'll just build it myself.

Dramatis Personae - Dez the Space Sloth

This is Dez the Space Sloth. He and his kind are in no way related to terrestrial sloths... they just look a little similar and are know for their unhurried (but very precise) ways... so people just started calling them that...

Dez, the Space Sloth.

Dez is an incredible mechanic. I'm adding them to the crew of the Silver Slip (for my solo Five Parsecs From Home campaign). I know there's an actual defined way to add crew in the rules... but it's my game, I can do what I want. And I want Dez to join the crew...

I thought I'd use the basic stats for the Engineers, but make them even SLOWER (3") and LESS EFFECTIVE in combat (-1) !? BUT I'll give him a +2 in Savvy to start and keep the +1 to repair rolls that the Engineers get.. so...

Species Type: Space Sloth

Reactions: 1

Speed: 3”

Combat: -1

Toughness: 2

Savvy: +3

Luck: 0

Background:  Lower Megacity Class - +1 Low-tech Weapon

Motivation: Just wants to work on a starship and do a good job - +1 Story Point

Class: Technician (+1 Savvy, Gear)

Gear: Scrap Pistol, Communicator

Am I going to start playing Five Parsecs From Home RIGHT NOW!? No, probably not... This miniature just happened to be lurking near the workbench for too long... without a base... and then I rebased all the Bloodletters of Khorne (from the 40K/Necromunda bases I originally based them on to something a little more generic...) so I had all these sci-fi bases kicking around that were already painted... and this guy didn't need a lot of painting... so I stuck them to a base and knocked them out and that's one more miniature done and it was fun thinking about the character...

I'll be back to posting new Age of Sigmar models tomorrow as I finished up a few Nighthaunts this evening!

Game Plan 2024 - Q1

It's a whole new year.... Whole new First Quarter....

This maybe isn't so much of a PLAN as a "Review of Things I'd LIKE to DO"... maybe some general guidelines...? While plans have worked in the past, when I've managed to stay FOCUSED... more often than not, they just make hobby-fun-time feel like work when I lose focus and interest in the thing I'd declared I would do... I really like the idea of challenges (10x10 Annual, or 5x5 Quarterly) because it encourages one to really DIG INTO a game and LEARN it... but trying to guess what those games I might be interested in over the next three months (let alone YEAR) is almost impossible for me to foretell anymore...

I have a Game Room again... so I should probably PLA Y SOME GAMES!!!

GAMES

ROLE-PLAYING GAMES

I would really, REALLY like to get back to playing and/or running some role-playing games. I'm not quite sure what that might look like.

I picked up a few new RPGs this year...

Blade Runner...

and the new version of Twilight: 2000!

Both are from Free League - and I REALLY LIKE the look of the systems.

I'm also still really interested in giving Wrath & Glory another go... I picked up Litanies of the Lost for this - a book of four adventures that can be run as one shots or strung together into a campaign of sorts.

and maybe Hellboy, if I could ever finish reading through the rules..

And I really like the idea of FATE and would like to explore that some more!

If I got playing Warcry and/or Warhammer Underworlds and/or Warhammer Quest: Cursed City again, I could also see myself wanting to try Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soulbound again!

Maybe in the new year I could run a series of one-shot adventures to try out all the systems and try out some new potential players and figure out something to run as a campaign later in the year...?

SOLO (or CO-OP?) GAMES

Last year I tried out some solo games - starting the year with a LOT of solo games of One Hour Wargames, and ending the year trying out Five Parsecs From Home and Five Leagues From The Borderlands. It went pretty okay. I had a lot of fun playing the games and even more fun tracking the campaigns of the armies (One Hour Wargames/Back of Beyond) or Crews (Five Parsecs From Home). It seems likely I will continue to do so this year.

It might be nice to try playing them as CO-OP games, though! I'm hoping maybe I might get Amanda to join me for some of those adventures!?

We also still have a lot of Warhammer Quest games to play through.

Amanda and I had a lot of fun playing through Blackstone Fortress in the early part of the pandemic. We finished the first campaign in the box, but never finished playing through all the OTHER campaigns...

ALL THE OTHER CAMPAIGNS!?

(Maybe we defeated the Ambul Hulk...?)

I never even finished painting the Cursed City stuff - let alone started PLAYING it...

Or either of the two Finnegan has (Silver City and Shadows Over Hammerhal - though he's played through the games - with UNPAINTED MINIATURES!?) I'd like to get back to that at some point! Will that be THIS year...? Not sure...

Also, Hellboy the Boardgame!!!

BOARD GAMES

So many board games I really want to play... once the Game Room is sorted, we'll have to start inviting people over on a more regular basis... maybe get a regular weekly (or... bi-weekly?) Game Night (or Afternoon?!) going...?

I mean, they're starting to get organized onto shelves in the basement...

The other shelves... These are both in the hall outside the Game Room.

There are a few IN the Game Room.

There are still a LOT of games spread about the house on assorted other shelving units. There just isn't enough space in the basement for all of them!?

SO MANY GAMES TO PLAY!!!

MINIATURE GAMES

I still love the idea of miniature games... I'd like to play more regularly... There are SO MANY though and I feel like it would help a LOT if I could just focus on ONE for a bit, get some stuff painted (miniatures AND terrain), and then play it for a bit (while painting up stuff for the NEXT project...?).

I am still really interested in Kill Team... (which is good, because I have an awful LOT of stuff for it!? It's a little ridiculous, really... I am DONE buying these boxes, though... I'll buy the books as they are released, if I have one of the teams... but I do NOT need more Kill Teams or terrain!!)

 and Warcry...

and Warhammer Underworlds...

ALL of the fast-playing, skirmish-level GW games... I have LOTS of stuff for each of the games that are painted and ready to go, that I could play with at ANY TIME - and SO MUCH MORE that I could play with if I finished painting them!

There are lots of other skirmish games I'd like to play again (or new ones to try out) - All the Ganesha Games (Song of...., etc) and others...

And all the LARGER skirmish games by Dan Mercy - Lion Rampant, Dragon Rampant, Pikeman's Lament, Men Who Would Be Kings, Rebels and Patriots... I HAVE forces ready to go for any of the first four - and so much MORE I could add to those forces... again... painting... There's also Xenos Rampant.. but I wasn't as wowwed by that one... maybe I just need to give it another try - maybe with some of the other genres (modern, weird warss, etc...)

I only just picked up new edition of Warhammer 40K (the mini version without all the fluff) and started playing it! I love the setting, but I'm not sure I have the time or patience for this to be a VERY regular thing like it maybe once was... I think I'd rather play the role-playing game (Wrath & Glory) and maybe bust out the armies when there is a narative driven scenario to play out! Maybe when and Imperial Guard or Aeldari codex comes out, I'll get more excited about it again... If there was an Emperor's Children Codex... I'd definitely have to pick that up!!

[ONE HOUR WARGAMES]

Playing One Hour Wargames was fun last year. Wouldn't mind doing MORE of that!

GAME WEEKEND

It has been a long time since I hosted a game weekend. I'd really LOVE to get back to doing that.

I'm not sure WHEN exactly that might be or format that weekend might take (minicon, cooperative campaign, competitive campaign or tournament) or what game(s) might be played.

There are many, MANY ideas I have for these that I'd like to play SOMEDAY... but the current MAIN ideas are:

The Under-Carngard Championships - this would be a Warcry Campaign/Tournament where all participants would be playing with Skaven warbands provided my ME. The weekend would start with drafting warbands from the collection of Skaven I have. This is one of the main sticking points for this one - I would NEED to FINISH PAINTING ALL THE SKAVEN!!! Which isn't a LOT... But I haven't been painting a lot the last few years... so...

The other options would be an RPG-lite tabletop miniature adventure... Each participant would have ONE CHARACTER that is a member of an adventuring party and over the weekend we would play through a series of linked scenarios leading to an ultimate battle with a big bad main protagonist.

I'm not 100% on what system or setting... could potentially make use of Five Parsecs From Home/Five Leagues From The Borderands - or possibly a return to Song of Blades and Heroes (or one of the other systems using the Ganesha Games Engine) or maybe even Savage Worlds - which has more options for non-combat skill use...

It could even be Wrath & Glory or Soulbound (with some larger tabletop battles making use of all the Warhammer Age of Sigmar or 40K miniatures!)

This would be for a very small group of 3-4 players... (maybe five or six if ALL of the DREAM TEAM of players were ALL able to travel to Saskatoon for the game!!)

CONVENTIONS

I feel like I'm done with public conventions.

Maybe MORE smaller invitational Game Weekends. Why just do ONE a year?!

TOURNAMENTS(!?)

Honestly, this wasn't even a consideration until a week or two ago when my friend Orion announced she was looking for a new partner for an upcoming 40K team tournament in February - Strange Bedfellows. I'm not sure there are any restrictions on who can pair up, but since she was planing on taking her Space Wolves I offered the option of bringing Imperial Guard or a mess of Agents of the Imperium and Grey Knights... OR maybe the Harlequins...? She suggested it would be fun to team up with the Tallarn, so... Tallarn it is! My Desert Raiders are going to see some action again!

Will I sign up for others...? My gut reaction is to say; "I doubt it!"... but then again, I would have said "I doubt it!" to the idea of signing up for ANY tournaments a few weeks ago, and yet, here I am... Battleforce Recon was fun the last two times I went!

MINIATURES

I'd really like to just try and NOT BUY ANY miniatures. I know it's ridiculous to make any such proclamations like: "I ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT BUY ANY MINIATURES THIS YEAR!" But I will say it is my INTENTION to minimize miniature purchases. I can't see any great NEED to buy anything at this point. Most of what I'm interested in playing I already HAVE everything I NEED... Honestly, I probalby have WAY MORE than I need for all the things... I just need to PAINT THINGS!?

I'd like to do some stock taking - now that the basement renovations are "finished" (are you EVER REALLY "finished" renovating your home...?) and we're sorting things out. Also some realistic planning of what I might EVER be able to finish painting... and maybe start clearing out some projects that will just NEVER see the light of day... Maybe...

WHAT will I be painting!?

Well that all depends where my ADHD brain decides to take me. I imagine with the upcoming tournament, I'll probably get some Tallarn painted up!!

After that...? stuff for whatever game I'm interested in at the moment... Likely some Sci-fi stuff for Five Parsecs from Home or Fantasy stuff for Five Leagues from the Borderlands...? But maybe also some Warhammer Underworlds warbands - as I've had a hankering to play that again. Or SKAVEN - in case that game weekend idea goes ahead (also, they could be useful for Five Leagues from the Borderlands).

I guess if I had to pick twelve things I could do, weekly, over the first quarter, right now, and had the power to STICK TO IT, it might look like:

  1. Manticore (40K - Self-Propelled Storm Eagle Rocket Launcher)
  2. Manticore (40K - Self-Propelled Storm Eagle Rocket Launcher)
  3. Basilisk (40K - Self-Propelled Artillery)
  4. Basilisk (40K - Self-Propelled Artillery)
  5. Scout Sentinel (40K)
  6. Scout Sentinel (40K)
  7. Ephilim’s Pandaemonium (Warhammer Underworlds Warband)
  8. Thricefold Discord  (Warhammer Underworlds Warband)
  9. Cyreni’s Razors  (Warhammer Underworlds Warband)
  10. Blackpowder's Buccaneers (Warhammer Underworlds Warband)
  11. Hexbane’s Hunters  (Warhammer Underworlds Warband)
  12. Elathain's Soulraid (Warhammer Underworlds Warband)
  13. Shadeborn (Warhammer Underworlds Warband)
I'll get those first six done, for sure (because I need them for the upcoming tournament!) after that, though...?

I'm also currently interested in getting some Skaven finished to try out the current version of Warcry (and possibly use them as hostiles in Five Leagues From The Borderlands)

I feel like I'm about half done them... ALMOST half done them... (I think there are a few in another box somewhere - like a couple more Rat Ogors, a Ratling Gun crew and a Master Moulder).

...and there are only about 24 Highland Dwarves I need to finish up to be COMPLETELY FINISHED that entire force for Dragon Rampant. (The two units in the top right of the picture!)

I'd also like to work on the boxes and boxes of sci-fi terrain that's come with all the Kill Team sets I've bought over the years! Not sure when I'll work that into the mix...?

What are YOU looking forward to playing or doing in 2024!? Got any BIG PLANS!? Or maybe just some modest, attainable plans...!?

Looking Back at 2023

Well... I did not get a lot of gaming or hobby stuff done this year... Not as much as I have in previous years... I feel like this has become a bit of a trend... and that makes me a bit sad.

There were reasons for a lot of that. The state of the basement and the renovation that dragged on through most of the spring... and summer... AND fall...?!

I'll try to keep this short and not dwell on things. It wasn't all doom and gloom. I'll try to focus on what I DID manage to do and then move right along to the next post; Game Plan 2024.

HIGHLIGHTS

Maybe let's start on a positive note with a few of the HIGHLIGHTS from 2023.

Hands down, the top highlight of the year was being able to meet up with my old friend Christian for a day while Amanda and I were out in Toronto. Christian is one of my absolute favourite humans on this planet. He was up at a ridiculous hour to catch a GO Train in from Barrie. We met up and wandered about downtown Toronto catching up, checked out Meeplemart and The Beguiling and spent most of the day playing games at Snakes and Lattees on College. We went for supper wandered around some more and got Christian back to Union Station to catch his train home in the evening. You can read more about it in September Games

The next big highlight was the Back of Beyond Campaign I ran from January to April!? It had some problems... but I got me motivated to play over TWENTY games of One Hour Wargames! They ended up all being solo games... but that was okay...

Finally, if I had a third highlight, I guess it would be finally sitting down and reading the rules for Five Parsecs From Home and trying that out. It's been really fun so far. Looking forward to exploring this more in 2024 - and trying out the Fantasy vversion Five Leagues from the Borderlands!

GAME PLAN 2023

Looking back at the Quarterly Game Plans...

Game Plan 2023 - Q1

Game Plan 2023 - Q2

Game Plan 2023 - Q3

Game Plan 2023 - Q4

They weren't really much of plans... I knew there wasn't likely to be much going on this year. I tried to keep the plans (if you can call them that) open and tried not to tie myself down to any grand plans that were destined to fail... TRIED not to...

Here are the numbers of what I DID get up to this year...

GAMES

In the end I managed to play 116 games this year. Marginally more than what I played last year... (96 games) and but way down from the previous year (212 games). The difference is that nearly a quarter of the games I played this year were SOLO games.  So I was playing games WITH people less, and that still makes me a bit sad.

Here are the games I played this year, according to Board Game Geek:

  • One-hour Wargames x20
  • Codenames x11
  • Wingspan x9
  • Splendor x8
  • Wingspan Asia x7
  • Five Parsecs From Home: Solo Adventure Wargaming x7
  • Clank! In! Space!: A Deck-Building Adventure x4
  • Loonacy x4
  • Agricola x3
  • Century: Golem Edition x3
  • Kingdom Builder x3
  • Set x3
  • Terraforming Mars x3
  • Abyss x2
  • Azul x2
  • Codenames: Pictures x2
  • Lords of Waterdeep x2
  • Tinderblox x2
  • Warhammer 40,000 (Tenth Edition) x2
  • 1754: Conquest – The French and Indian War x1
  • Beyond the Sun x1
  • Blade Runner: The Roleplaying Game x1
  • Boss Monster 2: The Next Level x1
  • Carcassonne x1
  • Castles of Mad King Ludwig x1
  • Charioteer x1
  • Compounded x1
  • Cryptid x1
  • Cyclades x1
  • Hellboy: The Roleplaying Game x1
  • Imhotep x1
  • Just Desserts x1
  • Shakespeare x1
  • Tyler Sigman's Crows x1
  • Tyrants of the Underdark x1
  • Vinci x1
  • Warhammer Underworlds: NightVault x1
  • Xenos Rampant x1

Not even close to doing a 10x10 Challenge... But, y'know, over 100, so... not bad.

Most played was One Hour Wargames - twenty of them - unfortunately all played solo... which was okay, I guess...

Next was Codenames, but that hardly counts - we knocked out all eleven games in ONE EVENING!!

Lots of games of Wingspan and Wingspan: Asia... earlier in the year before the renovation really got going.

I got really excited about the IDEA of role-playing games again - and bought three totally new ones (Hellboy, Bladerunner, and the new version of Twilight: 2000) as well as a few expansions for Wrath & Glory. I only got around to playing two, Hellboy and Blade Runner, for a single session of each, never getting past making characters.... Maybe NEXT year!?

MINIATURES

Also, an all time low - at least for as long as I've been keeping track.

I managed to paint 70 x 28mm minis.....  That's a few more of the 28mm miniatures than were painted last year... but last year I also painted a PILE of micro/epic scale stuff... So I'd say I ended up painting a bit LESS than last year.

Part of this was due to the renovation upheaval... maybe now that I have a semi-permanent painting station set up - and a ridiculously luxurious and HUGE one, at that - along with plans to play in an upcoming tournament - I should hopefully get a few more done in the next year... (more on that in Game Plan 2024 Q1 - coming up shortly)

Unfortunately I also managed to AQUIRE more that I ended up painting - 147 x 28mm miniatures - and MORE than I did last year!? Most of that was from five (FIVE!!) Kill Team boxed sets... which I haven't even managed to play ONCE this whole year!? (So embarrassing... Maybe I'll get some of that terrain finished up, though, and use it in Five Parsecs From Home!?)

Here is a breakdown of those acquisitions and painted minis!

So, mostly Games Workshop miniatures for 40K/Kill Team or AoS/Warcry.

PURCHASED (or otherwise acquired - gifts, trades, etc.)

4x Cyreni’s Razors (Warhammer Underworlds: Deathgorge)

Q4 Total: 15

2023 Total: 147

So... I bought twice as much as I managed to paint... at least it's not like some years where I bought hundreds - or even THOUSANDS - more miniatures than I managed to paint!?!? (it's happened!). This was only 70 more miniatures... If I had a good year or painting and not buying more stuff. I could bring knock that off fairly easily.
