October - Act One

After finishing up my September Painting-From-the-Masters Challenge, I took a few days off to figure out what the hell I was going to do next... and... I still don't know what I'm doing. One thing I know I'm NOT doing is painting any miniatures....

I was really hoping to carry on with Art-Making in October and add in some more regular bike-riding.

I didn't do much of anything on the first...

Friday, 2 October 2020

I did get out for a ride with this guy. We popped by the Dragon's Den and I picked up Century: Golem Edition - Eastern Mountains.

Saturday, 3 October 2020

Got this one to her tap class - and went for a bit of a ride while she was in class.

IN the evening, I ran a one-shot of Fate Accelerated - just to try it out. The adventure was called: Dude, Where's my WARHORSE!? Only two of the regular Saturday crew were able to make it out, so Finnegan joined in. It was a riot. Mistakes were made, but I'm really looking forward to trying this system again.

Sunday, 4 October 2020

I didn't go for a ride.

I didn't draw or paint anything.

Amanda and I DID try out Century: Golem Edition - Eastern Mountains. I know I tried out the original non-Golem version a while back and wasn't overwhelmed by it... but it was fun and different enough from the original Century: Golem... but had some of the same ideas...

I just trashed Amanda - she just couldn't wrap her head around it. I think I had 88 to her 60...?

Monday, 5 October 2020

I did draw a self-portrait on Monday. Self-Portraits are hard. Especially when tryiing to do it in front of the bathroom mirror. I wasn't happy at all with it. There is no way I'm sharing that hot mess here.

I did get out for a bike ride though. There's a whole post about that over on the Bike Blog:

Monday Afternoon Ride

Tuesday, 6 October 2020

Had another couple of goes at self-portraiture. Man, self-portraits are hard. Portraits in general are hard. Well... y'know.... portraits that actually LOOK like the person you're trying to draw. The portraits weren't  really for any vanity reasons, more because I wanted to try a portrait of an actual person and it's always disappointing for all involved when you try to draw someone else and it looks NOTHING like them... or... only looks slightly more like them than a potato.

This one I was the least disappointed with - as it was the one where I least looked like a potato. Well, a regular potato. I do kind of look like a mutant potato. But maybe I should think of this as a success as I kind of look like a mutant potato in real life...

In the late afternoon/early evening I went out for a ride.

When I got back, Amanda and I played another game of Century: Golem Edition - Eastern Mountains. I think she's kind of caught on. Despite a slow start and doing some wildly inefficient moves and going on about how she has no idea what she's doing, SHE's the one that ended the game by collecting a fourth victory toke (one turn before I would have!). I still won, but the margin was much narrower - 77-71. I think my days of winning this game are limited. Probably to two. The two we've already played.

Afterwards, I kind of stayed up CrAzY late and did this... back to the 40K theme... sort of...

Wednesday, 7 October 2020

I did get out for an hour or riding... but no pics

So... like... six months ago when all the COOL kids were doing this "Six Fan Arts" thingie (drawing six pictures of characters you are a fan of), I thought I'd jump in on that action and asked friends and followers on a few different social media platforms for suggestions, and my friend Orion suggested I draw Leman Russ - Primarch of the Space Wolves.... or... at least I HOPE he meant the Primarch and NOT the Astra Miliatrum tank named after him... boy will I feel silly if he meant the latter... Anyway, I never got around to doing ANY of the suggestions... until now...

Thursday, 8 October 2020

I got out for two rides on Thursday. One was in the morning, to get to an appointment, and the second was in the afternoon... just for fun... and to do some sketching.

Watercolour pnecils and Pentel brush pens, mostly. I did't eh wet brush work when I got home, as I'd not taken a brush when I went out with me.

Friday, 9 October 2020

Still all over the place. Back to portraits. This one was for my good friend Woody. He'd asked that I do a picture of Roy Batty from Bladerunner (back when I was asking for suggestions for the #sixfanarts thing... that I never did...)

In the evening, Amanda and I walked over to our friend Kurtis' and played a few of the Century games from Plan B Games.

First we tried out Century: The New World - the third installation in the original series.

There were some familar bits - managing and trading resources - though this time the yellow, red green and brown cubes represented corn, meat, tobacco and furs, respectively! There are a lot of new elements - some worker placement and set collection - so many moving parts!? It was a bit overwhleming!?

I dominated the first game by getting ALL THE WORKERS out as fast as I could.

In the second game, Kurtis and Amanda tried to emulate the strategy I'd played in teh first, somewhat, while I concentrated on other things... the scores were almost identical!?

Next we played Century: Golem Edition - Eastern Mountains - the second in the Golem series of games.

I don't know what THEY Were doing with their turns, but when I ended the game, taking my fourth victory tile, I think they, collectively, had three between them (one had one, the other two...?)

For the fourth game of the evening, we went all the way back to the original Century - Spice Road. Amanda won this one - proving that I do not ALWAYS win! Kurtis and I were about 10 points behind her...? She had 80-something and Kurtis had 73 and i had 72 - there, I wasn't even in SECOND place!

Saturday, 10 October 2020

I got out for a quick ride in the afternoon. I had started a drawing - a MAP for the adventure I was planning to run in the evening... but I didn't quite get it done in time... as it turns out, it wasn't really NECESSARY?! Maybe I'll finish it up for next week, though, as the one-shot I'd planned turned into a bit of a 1+1 shot...

Originally, Woody was supposed to kick off his Traveller game this week, but had apparently forgotten he was on parent duty as his wife was heading out somewhere. Jon and Randy also couldn't make it so Finnegan Joined Chris and Christian for another game of Fate Accelerated.

This one took place about 100 years or so in the future. Humans have spread out throughout the Solar System and have far more efficient drives - so it doesn't take years to get from planet to planet. The players were members of the United Nations Space Security Directorate - part of a Special Operations Recovery Team (SORT). A Manned mining station on one of Saturns moons went offline and as they were the nearest SORT, they were tasked with investigating.

Hijinks ensued.

As we spent MUCH of the time going over the rules again and trying to figure out character generation, we totally called it a night after 4.5 hours (which was midnight in Christian's time-zone, 10pm for the rest of us) and said we'd finish it off next week - or maybe some other week Woody isn't available.

Anyway, that's it for the first third of October. I've taken to posting on the Art Blog and Bike Blog again, so I may just post THAT sort of stuff there and just go back to posting games and minsituare here... which, will likely be few enough in these strange and troubled times of RENOVATING DURING A PANDEMIC!?

October - ACT TWO - just the games... maybe...

ToonCon 2018

This past weekend I attended ToonCon with the kids (Amanda would have been there but she was busy dodging hurricanes and alligators in Florida and learning about nap yoga). This is, I think the 8th year the convention has been running, and I've been to... most of them...?

Friday Evening

As is our tradition, The Girl and I played 7 wonders. We got in two, seven-player games.

The first I was Babylon and did... okay-ish... I didn't really concentrate on any one thing. I think I came in second with 50 or so points.

The second game I played Rhodes and went all military and blue buildings, two things I seem to rarely do... and totally crushed it... Maybe I'll have to take this strategy more often in the future!

The Girl did pretty good - both time coming in just after me (3rd and 2nd, respectively). I's funny, because everyone remembers her as "That little girl that won 7 wonders a last year" (although it was actually two years ago).

While we were playing 7 wonder, Finnegan was playing Roll for the Galaxy. I don't know how he did, but when I popped by to see what was going on, he had a good theme going on, so he was happy (for me this was a HUGE geek dad win - having raised kids that are more interesting in developing an interesting theme or narrative in a game than whether or not they're actually doing well in the game!)    Later he said it was okay, but it mostly just made him want to play RACE for the Galaxy again (which we haven't for some time!).

After that we played Viticulture, which was great fun! I usually don't do all that great at the game, but I have a lot of fun playing it - going through the process of building a vineyard - planting and harvesting and making stuff into wine and filling contracts and so on. I came very close to winning this time - we ran out of time and had to just call it and at the end of the last round we had a three way tie for first - the tie-breaker was money and I had one less than the guy who won (I think he had £12 and I had £11...?)

I'm not sure what Finnegan was doing...? I thought he had signed up for Viticulture? maybe he was at another table? Or maybe he skipped out and went and played something else...?

Finally we played a couple games of Century: Spice Road - another game I really enjoy playing - and usually do quite well at. The first game I was ON FIRE! I think I ended with 80-some points, and everyone else was back in the 60s... The second game we had to just stop as it was five to midnight and they were kicking everyone out.

Saturday

I didn't get a lot of sleep Friday night... for a few reasons... One: I was still getting stuff ready for the Kill Team game I was to run the following afternoon. The Other: when we got home Finnegan's blood-sugar level was CrAzY high!? Like potential-Ketoacidosis-shut-down-organs-dangerously-high!? So I was up for some time just trying to get that down - without it crashing down so low he ended up hypoglycaemic!

So Saturday we slept in and skipped the first round of games... I still only ended up with about 5 hours of sleep, but we got there for the second round!

The Girl and I were playing Stone Age. I've never played it before. It was a lot of fun. Worker placement in the stone ages - your tribe hunts and gathers food and acquires resources and builds huts... It's funner than it sounds.

While we were doing that Finnegan was trying out Clank!

After that, I ran my Kill Team game. None of the four guys had played it or any Warhammer games before, but they were keen and fun guys to play with. I totally overwhelmed them with the rules and then we tried to play a game.

As I had suspected... it went very slowly... We did get through one full round - during which there was a LOT of shooting and no close combat.

The Mechanicus mostly shot up the Drukhari and the Heretic Astartes shot up the Genestealers pretty good.

We played PART of a second round. WE went through the movement phase and then I skipped straight to the fight phase (there wouldn't have been THAT much shooting anyway) because I wanted to give them all a sense of how the fight phase worked - and give the Drukhari and Genestealers a chance to do THEIR THING after having been mauled so badly by fire in the previous round.

And they kicked some ass - the Genestealers took out the Chaos Space Marine Champion and the Drukhari took down the Mechanicus Vanguard leader... it was pretty awesome...

Hopefully everyone had a bit of fun and at least got a bit of a sense of how the game plays...?

Now that I've got all this stuff painted, I'm looking forward to playing this for FUN - no longer under the pressure to get things ready for the demo and worrying about how it's going to go.

Shortly after the afternoon games was the auction... There are people that come to the convention just for the auction. In just over two hours they auctioned off 344 games (THREE HUNDRED FOURTY FOUR!!!) 2-3 per minute... They're THAT fast! Every year I have a good look at all the games that will be up for action on Friday (or sometimes earlier if they post the list of games beforehand). Find the ones I'm genuinely interested in, check to see how much they cost new and what they're selling for used and then set a maximum I will bid and I STICK TO IT - When they are auctioning things off that fast it is SUPER easy to get carried away... I've seen used games sell for almost what they cost new!?

I had about 20 games I planned to bid on a half dozen were ones I was genuinely interested in, others were more like "Well if I can get this for $5-10, I'll try it out..."

I won five lots. one was something that hadn't been on my list (the Dogs one) - When it came up, The Girl said she was interested in it. I don't like bidding on items I don't really know anything about, but I bid on it anyway and got it for about $16CAD. Looks like it goes for about $40-50 in the geek marketplace, so I think we did okay there... The four Flash Point expansions were all in one lot I picked up for $30CAD - this was another thing The Girl was interested in, but at least she pointed these out to me last night and I was able to look up how much they were new... Marrying Mr. Darcy came with the Emma and Undead Expansions. The older version of Brass I just about bought for $70 a year ago but managed to pick it up for $16 at the auction.

There had been a couple copies of Caverna I bid on, but didn't get... and kind of wished I'd bid just a bit more. Both went for about half what it is new. There was also a copy of Power Grid with a BUNCH of map and deck expansions which I bid on... but didn't get.. Ah well, maybe next year...

One of these years I should probably offload a few games I know I'm never going to play again!

We went home when the auction was done. There were a couple more sessions in the evening - Finnegan and I had signed up for Terraforming Mars and The Girl had signed up for Mission: Red Planet and Imhotep - but with so little sleep and having run a game, I was just DONE!

Sunday

Sunday was different as we were all playing totally different games!

The Girl started off with Flamme Rouge - a bicycle racing game.

My first two session were taken up by Pendragon: The Fall of Roman Britain  - one of the newer COIN games from GMT. I like COIN games in general - though they are quite complicated and I'm not really sure what they hell I'm even doing, let alone how to do WELL in them...

Pendragon seemed a little more straightforward than the others... But maybe it was the faction I was playing - the Scotti, of course!!!

We kind of had to call it at some point because I had to go set up for the next game I was running.

Finnegan decided this year he wanted to try out Twilight Imperium 4 - and he ended up playing that ALL DAY!

I was a little worried he might be get a little overwhelmed and frustrated, but it seemed to go well enough...

While I was still playing Pendragon, The Girl went and played Castles of Burgundy. She's played it at ToonCon all three times she's come - she liked it so much the first time, she asked her grandma to get it for her for Xmas - and she got it... almost two years ago... and we have yet to play it at home!? Hopefully we'll get it on the table soon while she's still got the rules all fresh in her head!

For the final session of the weekend, I set up a game of Railways of the World to run for a few people. Originally six were signed up, but only three of them showed up!? So I joined in, as it was a learn-to-play and I like to play and SHOW everyone what I'm doing and explain why.

For the final round, The Girl got to play Power Grid. Afterwards she was saying she loved it and we need to play ours more! Which  made me a little more bummed that I didn't get the lot that included the base game and 8 expansions... Ah, well...

So all around I think everyone had quite a bit of fun and got excited about playing MORE games!

Bike parking was at a bit of a premium at the location - this was the only bike rack within blocks. It's kind of crammed into this little space between a fence, a planter and a spot to park a car. A Different guy had parked there with us on Friday evening and I think his bike might have been dinged by a car trying to pull in or out of that space!?

Coming Soon To Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

Well... hard to say.. I've been so focused on getting ready for this past weekend for the last few months, I can't say I've given much thought to what comes next. Amanda would like me to clear out the basement so we can renovate the "Game Room". Surely that will be ONE of my priorities. I still have a lot of 40K and Kill Team stuff I'd like to get painted sooner rather than later.... I wouldn't mind getting a Kill Team campaign underway - even if it's just with the family... and I wouldn't mind playing some OTHER games - now that the kids are super excited about.

August's Games

Well.... we got a few games in through August...

Wednesday, 1 August 2018

Some new friends finally made it over for a visit and a couple of games...

We started off with a game of For Sale.  I think I ended up with the Sky Scraper, but Finnegan or Taotao got the space station...

Next we played a couple of rounds of Codenames: Pictures. Both games were Girls against Boys. In the first round Finnegan and Amanda were the spy masters. Amanda and the Girl totally beat us down. Taotao had berated Finnegan a little bit and did a lot of face palms at his "clues" - which I didn't think were THAT bad. We played a quick second round - I suggested Taotao should be the spymaster for us that time so he could see it wasn't so easy... but then the girls guessed the assassin spot on their FIRST CLUE... and so he really didn't get a chance...

Thursday, 2 August 2018

My old friend Joss, whom I have not seen in YEARS (probably over a Decade! Maybe TWO!?), was in town and we managed to meet up to play a game. Joss is an absolutely fabulous guy who I met while I was working at the original Colllector's Edge in Saskatoon (before it burned down). (That weren't me). In addition to playing Magic: The Gathering, Joss actually played a lot of obscure CCGs which he introduced me to - Dune and . I think we also played a bit of Illuminati: New World Order (which I probably introduced him to. He also introduced me to Roborally - which was kind of the first non -military/historical warfare boardgame I think I ever played. Well... other than Monopoly and Payday and Game of Life and all those rubbish games I played as a kid...

We ended up playing Viticulture, as it was one of the few games I had that Joss had not played and he wanted to give it a try. There were no complaints from me or The Girl as we both really like the game too.

It was a super close game... well.. for Joss and The Girl - they had 22 or 21...? I think The Girl won in the end. I scored the very first victory point, but my lead was VERY short-lived. I ended the game with 15 points... I was only just getting my ducks in a row. If there'd been one more round I'd have been right up there with them... of course THEY probably would have scored more points and then I wouldn't have been up there with them...? Still love the game, even if I am crap at it!

Friday, 3 August 2018

After three and a half years I FINALLY got all of the miniatures painted and we played a game. This would be bad enough if it was my own game, but it was actually given to Finnegan as a birthday present with the promise I would play it with him as soon as I got the minis done (Worst. Gamer. Dad. EVER!)

We played Scenario 1: Beachhead. Marine victory was to have 7+ surviving marines and all rooms cleared of genestealers at the end of turn twelve. Genestealer wins if less than five remaining marines at the end of turn twelve. Any other outcome is a draw.

The game was INTENSE! I played the marines and lost three of my guys in the first three rounds!! Losing one more meant I could not win the mission - only make it a draw! I forged ahead, though, and eventually started to feel like I was getting the upper hand - then, on turn ten (out of twelve) I lost a fourth and fifth marine.... I managed to save the rest of the crew and bring it to a draw, however...

There is a full report of this game here:

Space Hulk – Game One - Beachhead

Saturday, 4 August 2018

On Saturday, Amanda and I wandered over to our friend Kurtis' for his birthday celebration - and some games!

First we played Portal: The Uncooperative Game of Cake Acquisition

All I really remember was that it was really quick, and Brent won...

Next we played Condottiere.

It was also kind of quick... I kind of gambled picking the next location to be one that was next to one of Kurtis' two adjacent territories, hoping everyone would team-up against Kurtis to keep him from winning and they'd all waste their cards in the process so I could sweep in and win... Yeah, that kind of failed..

Finally, we played a game of Century: Spice Road.  Kurtis ended the game picking up a fifth card - everyone else had four. It was SUPER close Now won with 71, I had 67, everyone else was in the 60s. Despite having 5 cards, Kurtis ended up being last at 62!

It was a fun afternoon of games.

Sunday, 5 August 2018

Amanda, The Girl and I had a quick game of Kingdomino in the evening.

I totally crushed it with 58 points! Woo!

Wednesday, 8 August 2018

Finnegan and I got in THREE games of Space Hulk in the afternoon.

First, we played the first scenario again, switching sides. I played Genestealers, Finnegan played Marines. I won in three turns...

I had some insanely lucky rolls, coupled with some really bad rolls on Finnegan's part at critical moments...

Took down this Sergeant with the Thunderhammer and Lightning Shield... and it was all downhill from there.

Next, we played Scenario #2: Suicide Mission. I played the marines, Finnegan played the genestealers. I made it to the end of turn four, and about half way to the objective room.

Then we switched it around and played Scenario #2: Suicide Mission again.  This time I took the Genestealers and Finnegan took the Marines. He made it to the end of the fourth turn. Around the end of the third turn he was feeling a little deja vu...

There is a more detailed report of these games - with loads more pictures here:

MORE Space Hulk - Three More Games

Friday, 10 August 2018

On Friday we played Another game of Space Hulk in the afternoon.

We played Scenario #3: Exterminate. This was a bit longer of a game and SUPER INTENSE!! I played the Marines again and Finnegan the Genestealers.

So close... I got to turn 11 then everything went to shit for the marines...

A full report and LOADS of pictures can be found here:

STILL More Space Hulk

Wednesday, 15 August 2018

WE finally got in a game of Kill Team!

My friend Other Tim stopped by and I set up a game for him and Finnegan to play. Finnegan played Orks. Other Tim played Space Marines. They played the Gathering Intel mission from the book. Finnegan's Ork team was broken by the end of Turn Three.

There is a full report of this action over here:

Kill Team - First Game!

Friday, 17 August 2018

Friday evening I FINALLY got to finish running Blessings Unheralded - the Free RPG day Quickstart rules and adventure for Wrath & Glory. It was great fun.

At one point Bob, who was playing Pater Naemoris, the Ministorium preacher, lead the faithful in prayers to the Emperor for the swift recovery of their ailing friend in the hospital.

For the final showdown, I used one of my handy new Sector Imperialis boards from Kill Team.

Amanda, playing the Battle Sister, making some sort of declaration or oath...

They succeeded in defeating the big bad guy, but only after he contaminated the distribution facility. Amanda was able to shift two exalted icons in her tech roll to attempt to shut the facility down before the contagion spread, so I said only a few hundred died due to starvation while a small part of the facility was decontaminated...

So looking forward to the full release of this game and running a campaign later in the fall...

Saturday, 18 August 2018

Taotao popped by for a few more games Saturday evening...

First we played Exploding Kittens. Luckily I was first out of the game. I LOVE the Oatmeal... but loathe Exploding Kittens...

Then we played another game of For Sale, which Taotao and Finnegan tied with $62000.

Finally, we tired to get in a game of Century: Golem, but it was cut short by Taotao's mum's arrival.

Sunday, 19 August 2018

Two more games of Kill Team!

We introduced the game to Da Boyz - a couple of the kids friends...

The first game went waaaaay longer than it should have, the second game was much shorter.

There is a full report of the afternoon's shenanigans over here:

Monday, 20 August 2018

I finally got in a game, myself. I fought with my Tallarn Desert Raiders against Finnegan's Orks.

It went poorly for the Guard...

There is a full report of this game too:

STILL MORE Kill Team

Tuesday, 21 August 2018

ON Tuesday we played Flashpoint: Fire Rescue

Keira's been asking to play this for a while. Just playing the basic intro game - as those are the only rules she's read and I've read none of them.

It was a very near thing half the house was ablaze by the time we ended the game. We DID manage to rescue seven (I think) before too many perished in the blaze. Those two markers at the bottom of the picture would have been toast...

Friday, 24 August 2018

On Friday Finnegan offered to run a role-playing game for the rest of the family.

He ended up running and introductory game of Dungeon Crawl Classics. I have to admit, I've been bored to tears by fantasy games for some time now, but this was genuinely fun. Maybe it was just because I was playing with my very favourite people in the world. Or Finnegan's totally enthusiasm. Whatever it was, I had a good time. We each started by rolling up FIVE level 0 characters!

It was a short dungeon we bashed our way through, losing a few of our characters along the way. Perfect for a single-envening one-shot adventure.

All of my characters.

I'd play it again...

Sunday, 26 August 2018

In the afternoon, Taotao stopped by to play games again.

We all played a game of Railways of the World. Taotao picked up the game very quickly and totally won, beating Amanda by a couple points...

Afterwards Amanda went out to play Numenera. I've dropped out of the group because... well.. Numenera's just not doing it for me. I don't know if it's the system or the setting or a subtle combination of the two, but I was having a really hard time caring about it at all and was looking upon each session with dread, feeling like I HAD to go... Then I got to thinking - Why am I doing this if I'm not really having fun? So I dropped out. Amanda's still going, though.

The rest of us played a game of Kingdomino. Which Keira utterly thrashed us at!

Monday, 27 August 2018

This past Monday was the beginning of our Kamp Kill Team Campaign! For the last week of summer vacation I ran a short campaign of Kill Team for the kids and a couple of their friends. Monday through Thursday we played a couple of games of Kill Team each day and on Friday they were to play 40K with a force with a Power Level equal to the resources their team had remaining at the end of the campaign.

There are full reports of each days activities - Day One can be found here:

Friday, 31 August 2018

Day Five of Kamp Kill Team - though we didn't actually play Kill Team today... Teh kids played a couple games of regular old 40K with Power Levels equal to the total resources they had at the end of the campaign.

The Girl's Harlequins faced the Forces of Chaos

Finnegan's Orks Faced the forces of Hivefleet Haemorrhoid.

A full report of these two epic games can be found elsewhere on this blog:

Kamp Kill Team - Day Five - the Final Battle

After the 40K games Finnegan had to run out for a quick appointment and Keira got Da Boyz to play a quick game of Just Desserts with her!

Whew! That WAS a lot of gaming - especially this last week!

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

September... Usually in September we have a Game-a-Day Challenge. We've done this for the last four years, I think...? the last few, we added the extra stipulation that it should be a DIFFERENT game each day... I'm thinking this year, to try and get caught up a bit on the 25/30x5 gaming challenge, we might select six games and play them five times each - 30 games, 30 days... I'll probably do weekly updates through September.

Other than that expect the usual painting updates, which will likely consist of Kill Team terrain and teams as I ramp up to run another campaign with the family and prepare for the Learn-to-Play I am running at ToonCon this year.
