I don't really CARE for the Stormcast Eternals... They're like the Space Marines in 40K. Soulless executors of the God-Kings/Emperor's will. Kind of Fascists, really...
How did I end up with an ARMY of them...
Well...
It all started with Warhammer Underworlds?! As I kind of collected up Warbands for that game, I kind of just ended up with a pile of Stormcast Eternals... because they just keep making Stormcast Eternal warbands in EVERY edition... enough of them that they make up a small force in Age of Sigmar. When Third Edition was released, Finnegan and I played a small Paths to Glory campaign, ans one of the forces we used was Stormcast Eternals made up of Warhammer Underworlds warbands!?
And then Fourth Edition happened... and initially I pre-ordered the Skaventide box thinking I'd KEEP the Rules and boards and cards and terrain for Spearhead and just sell off ALL THE MINIATURES... but then I PLAYED a game of Spearhead at the Warhammer Store WITH the Stormcast Eternals Spearhead force... and got to thinking... Maybe I could keep these...? They'll be easy enough to paint... They kind of kick ass... THEN I happened to pick up one of the starter sets from 3rd Edition that my FLGS was blowing out (everything ended up being 70% off the regular retail price - how could I not!?)... and THEN I ordered a BUNCH of used Heroes from Fenris Workshop at 60-70% off... and suddenly I found myself in possession of 1920 points - enough for a full-sized army
Also, they could also be called upon for use in Warhammer, Age of Sigmar: Soulbound (the role-playing game). The player characters are almost always Soulbound servants of the Gods of Order, and Stormcast Eternals can usually be called upon as allies... the Stormcast often ask the Soulbound out for help... Stormcast Eternals can even PLAYED as character - which can't be Soulbound, themselves, but often accompany groups of Soulbound.
The Warhammer Underworlds warbands are all painted as members of the Hammers of Sigmar Stormhost, so far... just because that's what the characters were in Warhammer Underworlds. Hammers of Sigmar are sort of the default force of Stormcast - just like the Ultramarines in 40K. They have a close association with the city of Hammerhal (which features heavily in Warhammer Quest and Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soulbound).
I have to admit, I'm a little bored of the Hammers of Sigmar, though, so I decided that all the new ones I'm painting are going to be from the Anvils of Heldenhammer. I mostly picked those because I liked the look of their black armour that was a stark contrast to the more typical golden sigmarite of the Hammers of Sigmar (which is how I've painted all the other Stormcast Eternals I've painted for Warhammer Underworlds!). I had NO IDEA about their background fluff!?
All Stormcast Eternals were once brave mortal humans that were loyal to Sigmar or at least vehemently opposed to Sigmars enemies (usually CHAOS!). For most of them, their souls were plucked away from Nagash at the moment of their death - often in battle - and reforged into the nigh immortal Stormcast Eternals on the Anvil of Apotheosis...
The Anvils of Heldenhammer are a little different... They were built using souls of long dead heroes from the Age of Myth. Sigmar sought them out in whatever underworld they were spending their post-death eternity in and scooped their souls up and fashioned them into Stormcast Eternals that they may live again and serve Sigmar in perpetuity. They tend to be a dour brooding lot that speak in an archaic manner!?
ANVILS OF HELDENHAMMER
These are all the miniatures I've pained as Anvild of Heldenhammer, so far (the Warhammer Underworlds - and others - painted as Hammers of Sigmar, can be found below...)
Heroes
Knight-Questor Kalilah Stormfriend
I worked out a bit of a background for Knight-Questor Kalilah Stormfriend - I'd planned to use her in a solo campaign using elements of Five Leagues from the Borderlands and Age of Sigmar: Soulbound... I haven't gotten around to building the rest of the group or played any games, but you can read about her here:
Dramatis Personae - Knight-Questor Kalilah Stormfriend
Units
(none to show just yet!)
HAMMERS OF SIGMAR
These are all Warhammer Underworlds warbands that I've painted as the Hammers of Sigmar
What I have painted so far...
It was enough for a starting Paths to Glory force in Third Edition... Not-so-much now... There were rules in 3rd Edition for including Warhammer Underworlds Warbands in regular Age of Sigmar armies. They did away with that in Fourth Edition. They did initially release rules for these to be used as "Legends" - There were stats and point values for them, but they weren't allowed in Matched-Play competition...
Heroes
(none to show just yet!)
(Though Averon Stormsire is a Knight-Incantor!? In the previous editions, if you took Warhammer Underworlds warbands that included characters that would be Heroes... they WERE Heroes, and the rest of the warband just came along as a companion unit... Now that all the Warhammer Underworlds warbands have been moved to "Legends" they've streamlined and simplified further and made them all regular Units, regardless of what is IN the unit... So without a Hero to lead them, these would all have to be fielded as Auxiliary units!?)
Units
The Storm of Celestus - a Warhammer Underworlds warband - the warband includes Sleek the Gryph-Hound, - for a while, these were sold as a unit of three Castigators (with a bonus Gryph-Hound?)
MORE Castigators! These are the miniatures from the Crypt Hunters board game.
Steelheart’s Champions
Stormsire’s Cursebreakers
Xandire’s Truthseekers
Ironsoul's Condemnors - like The Storm of Celestus, these were sold as a unit of three Sequitors. The Sequitors (as with the Castigators) have all been done away with in the current edition.
STILL TO DO
This is what I have still to do (all of which will be Anvils of Heldenhammer):
- Lord-Terminos (1)
- Lord-Veritant (1+1)
- Lord-Vigilant on Gryph-stalker (1)
- Knight-Vexillor with Banner of Apotheosis (1)
- Knight-Relictor (1)
- Knight Arcanum (1)
- Lord-Relictor (1)
- Lord-Imperatant (1)
- Lord-Imperatant's Gryph-hound (1)
- Liberators (5)
- Liberators (5)
- Prosecutors (3)
- Reclusians (3)
- Castigators (3)
- Praetors (3)
- Vindictors (5)
- Vindictors (5)
- Gryph Hounds (6)
- Domitan’s Stormcoven (3)
- The Emberwatch (3)
THE PLAN
The first order of business should be to finish up a Spearhead army. It shouldn't be too much workm as it is just ELEVEN models! (Though one of them is the very large Lord Vigilant on Gryph-Stalker!).
After that, I'd like to finish up a few more units to fill out a 1000 point force that could be used in a Paths to Glory campaign.
Finally, If I got the rest of the stuff painted, I could eventually have a full 2000-point army!
There are also the two Warhammer Underworlds warbands... I haven't been playing Warhammer Underworlds for a bit, so they're not a high priority at the moment. I could paint them up if I got playing that again, or if they could be useful in other games (Soulbound!).
SPEARHEAD
The first thing is to finish up the Vigilant Brotherhood Spearhead Army that came with the Skaventide box. It's eleven models... how hard can that be!?
General
- Lord Vigilant on Gryph-Stalker
Units
- Lord Veritant (plus Gryph-Crow!)
- 3 Prosecutors
- 5 Liberators
1000-Point Paths to Glory Army
(Spearhead+)
The next step after finishing a spearhead army, would be to finish off 1000 points worth of stuff to play smaller games, or ideally, play in a Paths to Glory campaign. This starter force for a Paths to Glory campaign builds on the Spearhead army.

STUFF TO GET
I really don't feel ANY need to get anything else for this...
Maybe Neave Blacktalon (and friends?)? I've listened to Neave Blacktalon: First Mark, and it was kind of fun and she's a member of the Hammers of Sigmar... I have some of those already with all the Warhammer Underworlds stuff... so, I could see myself picking up that box, maybe... some day...
I was looking at the Special Store Anniversary Figure for 2025 which is a Stormcast Eternal Knight-Zephyros - Estenna of Brighthall - she looks pretty rad... but I went looking for rules and points and, initially, couldn't find any... because the Knight-Zephyros is a LEGENDS unit!? Still thinking about that one... but really WHY on earth would you release a SPECIAL miniature that doesn't have rules in the current battletome and can't actually be used in a game!? (well... a matched play game... the rules are there in Legends...)
Dragons are cool... you can field dragons in this army... or Stormcast Eternals RIDING Dragons... IF I got all of the Anvils of Heldenhammer painted and IF I was actually playing Age of Sigmar on a regular basis and IF I was using this force in any of those games... maybe I could pick up a Dragon...
