Never really planned to have a Nighthaunt "army"... but I do have a BUNCH of them now, so I thought I might as well make a gallery for them!
This all started - as MOST of the Age of Sigmar forces have - with Warhammer Underworlds warbands!?
Then I picked up the Arena of Shades box set which was on the deeply discounted Bargain Shelf at my FLGS... I figured they'd be quick and easy to paint and could be used as antagonists in role-playing games and other skirmish games.
Then they announced the Fourth Edition Battletome and a new Spearhead army to go with it - the Cursed Shacklehorde - and I realized I already owned over HALF of that force... AND they were already painted! So I got to thinking I should pick up the other two units and build that...
PAINTED

All the painted Nighthaunts, so far...
Heroes
Spirit Torment - Came with the Arena of Shades box.
Amanda has used this miniature for her character in an Age of Sigmar: Soulbound campaign using Champions of Death.
Cairn Wraith
I have two of these Cairn Wraiths (the other is being re-based). They are old metal models... but they're GW/Citadel miniatures... so... why not use them as Cairn Wraiths!? Each are individual heroes and could either lead a regiment or could be included in another Heroes regiment as a "Cursed Soul"... but.. not any of the heroes I have!?
Units
Chainghasts - Also came with the Arena of Shades box.
Bladegheist Revenants - Also came with the Arena of Shades box.
Chainrasps - these came with the Crypt Hunters board game, but they are a full unit of ten chainrasps!
Glaivewraith Stalkers - This was a Warhammer Underworlds warband - Drepur's Wraithcreepers - which had previously been available as Easy-Build Glaivewraith Stalkers... so have remained a regular useable unit while so many Warhammer Underworlds warbands have passed into Legends (below)
Myrmourn Banshees - as with the Glaivewraith Stalkers these were also a Warhammer Underworlds warband - Lady Harrow's Mournflight. I have a second unit of these that still needs painting.
Legends
Legends are units that are no longer included in the Battletome - stuff that's been discontinued or just no longer allowed in Matched Play. For most of my armies, that usually means Warhammer Underworlds warbands that, in previous editions, were allowed to be fielded in regular Age of Sigmar... and were even included in the Third Edition Battletomes... but are no longer.
Nighthaunts are no exception... EXCEPT, two of the units that were Warhammer Underworlds warbands, have been rereleased as generic units and ARE included in the units above (Glaivewraith Stalkers and Myrmourn Banshees!)
Thorns of the Briar Queen
STILL TO DO
This is what I have still to do:
Heroes
- Scriptor Mortis
Units
- 4x Myrmourn Banshees
- 5x Craventhrone Guard
- 4x The Headsmen’s Curse
- 2x Dreadblade Harrows
- 10x Dreadscythe Harridans (when I get them...)
Currently the PRIORITY for painting is... Any of them...? ALL of them!? There is not a lot left to DO!?
Unlike other forces, I wasn't really trying to put together an army of these... I mostly see them being used in... other games... some are Warhammer Underworlds Warbands. Others I might use for Warhammer Quest or Soulbound. But since I have enough of them...
THE PLAN
As I suggested earlier, there was no real PLAN... but since I have the stuff.. and there isn't much of it.. I hope to have it ALL finished up shortly. Normally I'd say "I'll finish up the Spearhead army first!" but instead, I'm going to finish up ALL THE OTHER THINGS that I have BEFORE I buy more units to finish up the spearhead army!!
Spearhead
The Cursed Shacklehorde Spearhead Army contains:
General:
- Spirit Torment
Units:
- Chainghasts (2)
- Dreadscythe Harridans (10)
- Bladegheist Revenants (10)
- Dreadblade Harrows (2)
I already had the Spirit Torment, Chainghasts, and Bladegheist Revenants finished when this new Spearhead army was announced (to be released with the Fourth Edition Nighthaunt Battletome)! I recently picked up a used set of Dreadblade Harrows. Once I have those (and the Scriptor Mortis and Craventhrone Guard) finished, I'll pick up the Dreadscythe Harridans and knock them out in a day or two and I'll have another Spearhead Army I can play with!!
Paths to Glory
As I do like the idea of playing campaigns and for ALL THE OTHER factions, the next step is to put together a 1000 point force that could conceivably be used in a Paths to Glory campaign! Once the Spearhead Army is done, I'll easily have enough to do that!
Scriptor Mortis General's Regiment
- Hero - Scriptor Mortis (1) 80 - Any Infantry
- Unit - Bladegheist Revenants (10) 180 - Infantry
- Unit - Craventhrone Guard (5) 100 - Infantry
- Unit - Glaivewraith Stalkers (4) 80 - Infantry
- Chainrasps (10) 90 - Infantry
Total: 530
Spirit Torment's Regiment
- Hero - Spirit Torment (1) 130 - 0-1 Black Coach, Any Infantry
- Unit - Chainghasts (2) 90 - Infantry
- Unit - Myrmourn Banshees (4) 120 - Infantry
- Unit - Myrmourn Banshees (4) 120 - Infantry
Total: 460
Army Total: 990
Larger Forces?
Not really even considering that... When I have ALL THE THINGS painted, I will have 1590 points worth of stuff and don't really feel like adding anything to this at the moment.
When it's all done, this is what I'll have:
Heroes
- Cairn Wraith (1) - 130 - Any Infantry This Hero can join an eligible regiment as a Cursed Soul.
- Cairn Wraith (1) - 130 - Any Infantry This Hero can join an eligible regiment as a Cursed Soul.
- Scriptor Mortis (1) 80 - Any Infantry - This Hero can join an eligible regiment as a Cursed Soul.
- Spirit Torment (1) 130 - Any Infantry - This Hero can join an eligible regiment as a Cursed Soul.
Heroes Total: 470
Units
- Bladegheist Revenants (10) 180 - Infantry
- Chainghasts (2) 90 - Infantry
- Chainrasps (10) 90 - Infantry
- Craventhrone Guard (5) 100 - Infantry
- Dreadblade Harrows (2) 170 - Cavalry
- Dreadscythe Harridans (10) 170 - Infantry
- Glaivewraith Stalkers (4) 80 - Infantry
- Myrmourn Banshees (4) 120 - Infantry
- Myrmourn Banshees (4) 120 - Infantry
Total: 1120
ARMY TOTAL: 1590!?
STUFF TO GET
I will pick up some Dreadscythe Harridans at some point, to finish off that Spearhead army. Ideally, I'd like to finish ALL THE OTHER THINGS first...
Other than that... do I ever need to buy another Nighthaunt thing again, ever?!
Nope.
Will I...?!
Maybe...
If there is a new Warhammer Underworlds warband that looks fun... I'd probably pick that up!
If ever I wanted to field the Dreadblade Harrows, I'd need a Hero that could include CAVALRY in their regiment (Currently, the Heroes I have Scriptor Mortis, Spirit torment, and Cairn Wraiths can only include INFANTRY in their regiments)!? Knight of Shrouds, maybe... Before I though I'd only be able to do this if I could find a used one on it's own and I didn't have to buy the box with two others for $100!? But they've recently announced that the Knight of Shrouds will be released as an individual hero... probably for $50... but... whatevs.
Oh, wow... "Do I ever need to buy another Nighthaunt thing again, ever?!" Famous last words! If you paint them, they will come!
ReplyDeleteHa-ha! Yeah, I acknowledge that I may buy other things... Just saying, realistically, I don't NEED anything for this force, given it's current purpose... which is mostly just potential hostiles for a game of Soulbound... or similar...
DeleteThe biggest factor I have to overcome is impulse buying. 3D Printing makes it even worse as you can buy something and feel like you will get around to it when you are ready. I admire your painting output and gaming output. Thanks for posting!
ReplyDeleteOh, there is ZERO chance I am ever going to get a 3D printer... that would be a NIGHTMARE!?
Delete(Also I know multiple people that have them that have all said they'd print me anything I want... and I just don't even want to start looking!?)
cheers!
