ToonCon 2020 - Part 1 - Friday Night - Blackstone Fortress

Friday night kicked off ToonCon 2020 and I was running a game of Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress!

I had four players (from left to right); Ryan (in red, who played in my Kill Team game a couple years ago) played Espern Locarno, Imperial Navigator, Jon (from Jon's Hobby Desk) played Taddeus the Purifier, Ministorum Priest, Craig played Amallyn Shadowguide, Asuryani Ranger, and Another Tim (who is kind of cut off in this picture) played UR-025, Imperial Robot. it was kind of fun to see Taddeus and UR-025 on the table - as I haven't played with them yet. Wow... the Robot is pretty awesome!

Jon's played the game and plays a lot of 40K, Craig and Tim were familiar with the 40K universe, but had not played Blackstone Fortress, Ryan knew nothing of the game or background, so I did a bit of explaining of the background and then the basics of the rules and a bit about how a campaign is played (to give  some sense of WHY they would be looking for archaeotech and clues). My hope was that we would be able to complete a full expedition and get back to precipice to spend archaeotech - just so they could see how a campaign is played - even if they wouldn't get to USE the new goodies they picked up with their archaeotech.

I had prepared the exploration deck as I was setting up the game before people had come by. If I were doing it again (running a demo at a convention), I might actually just seed the deck with certain combats and challenges - maybe even predetermine the order of them rather than shuffling...

The first exploration card revealed a combat.

There were Traitor Guardsmen and Ur-Ghuls as hostiles - there were a LOT of Guardsmen and I think I suitably frightened them of the Ur-Ghuls and it was the first of four combat they might have to face - so they, sensibly, played it a bit cautious...

There was a third discovery token - and the card I drew was Negavolt Cultists - but in the position it was in, it generated a twist rather than hostiles. The twist was the one were entering a discovery area required an agility check and failure meant a grievous wound...? All but Amallyn Shadowguide had a d6 for Agility - so 66% chance of failing and gaining a Grievous Wound on the first encounter!

Set up fields of fire and let the enemy come to them and blew them apart with overwatch fire...

Then, the lights went out... and event required us to flip a hostile card from the deck and if there was a twist, it remained in effect for the rest of the game

They blew apart most of the baddies... then six more guardsmen showed up! They decided not to be greedy and left one of the discovery markers unchecked and made for the escape chamber.

The second exploration card was also a combat - there were TWO groups of Guardsmen. The picture above is part way through the second turn and almost all of them were wiped out already!

Though my game was scheduled to be played over two sessions, Jon had signed up for Scythe in the second session and left us. luckily there was a fellow named Tyler that had joined us to watch and when Jon left, he took over Taddeus.

Boom! Guardsmen cleared out, treasures acquired, on the way out! This second combat went a lot quicker.

Third Exploration Card - ALSO a combat!! Yikes! (This is why I was feeling like maybe seeding the deck might have been a good idea!)

This was the first time they'd faced Spindle Drones - but they were at Threat Level 0 - so not to scary...

All were dealt with quickly enough.

I forget what discovery cards were drawn - at SOME point the cards that happened to be the cards required for Shadowguide and Locarno's Secret Agendas were drawn - but not by either of those players. Everyone was in a cooperative enough mood (or recognized that an ally that was inspired might actually save their collective asses and improve their overall chances of survival) and so they were traded (or given) to the respective characters. UR-025 also ended up inspired - through gaining inspiration points throughout eh wholesale slaughter of Traitor Guardsmen! I'm pretty sure Taddeus also ended up inspired by the end of the game... but I'm not sure if he completed a Secret Agenda or just acquired 3 inspiration points... Not really time to take notes when trying to keep a game going at a convention!

After the third combat there were two Challenge cards. One was The Chasm - everyone had to make an agility roll or potentially fall into the chasm - as I mentioned three of them only had a d6 (only two of the sides have successes!) Strangely, two of them passed - and neither was Amallyn Shadowguide - with her d12 Agility! Failing means having to discard a discovery or resource card or taking your chances rolling the Blackstone die (a d20) on a 1 character dies, on 2-19character takes a Grievous Wound, on a 20 character miraculously survives. Wisely they both chose to discard some archaeotech they'd acquired earlier!

The second Challenge card was, I think, The Race - all roll a d6 and add their move. Those that tie bump into each other in the race to collect archaeotech and fall down and had to make a defence roll or take a wound. those that didn't choose in order of highest total to lowest from four cards drawn from the discovery deck. Two collided and fell, but didn't take a wound. The other two collected archaeotech. I forget who did what... ?

The Sixth Exploration Card was the final combat! An AMBUSH! In it both Taddeus and the indomitable UR-025 were knocked out of action - but neither died in the recovery phase! They didn't even bother trying to fight through the waves of Traitor Guardsmen to get to the discovery markers on the sides.

After that there were two more Challenge Cards. The first was a hidden treasure - everyone rolls four activation dice and the highest total gained a discovery card. The final one was the Countdown - the one I did last game where you have 20 seconds to stack the five destiny dice - but they have to be stacked with numbers, in order (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5) and have to be ROLLED that way... they decided to skip that one... (as you have the option, on that card, of just passing it by).

I did set stuff up for the precipice step, and they had a look at the cards, but no one purchased any or tried out any of the things you can do at the ships...

It was a fun game with a fun bunch of guys.

I was there setting up at 6pm, but was done and waiting by the time the last guys showed up to play at 6:30. Amanda and I walked out of the building at 11pm - after packing it all up again. So we probably played for 4 hours - that also included explaining all the rules and a bit of the background.

Unfortunately, Amallyn Shadowguide's rifle barrel got broken... I had feared this might happen, and had even considered NOT TAKING HER for that reason... I did recover the broken bit, so hopefully I'll be able to glue that back on... spindly plastic bits can sometimes be glued back on. If it was metal, there'd be no way something that thin could be glued - as it's just too thin to drill and pin.

I took all of the cards out of the "Stasis Vaults" to play this, so we'll be rebooting our own campaign when we get back to it. I am pretty excited about doing so, though! Might be just me and Amanda playing it though. But that's okay, I guess. Playing games with my favourite person in the world is pretty awesome - even if the minions won't join us anymore!

While I was playing this Amanda tried out Ecos and Innovation. She thought they were both good and would play them again... but not ready to run out and buy us copies!

There were still lots of games going on when we left.

We'd gotten lift to the Convention, as I had 10 games I was bringing for the auction, but we walked home - it was really nice out (for early March) and only a half hour walk to our house. Not sure how nice it's going to be Saturday as the temperature is dropping and there is a heavy snowfall warning!

I signed up for Wingspan Saturday morning (which I've never played and thought it might be interesting to try) and Stone Age at noon (which I have played and it's fun and we don't own a copy, so I only ever play it at ToonCon) but was feeling a bit tired in the morning and, honestly, running games WIPES ME OUT - so I decided to skip the early games and would head over in the afternoon for the later afternoon game I'd signed up for (Architects of the West Kingdom - never played it - never even heard of it before I saw it listed in the schedule), and, of course, the GAME AUCTION!!!

There isn't a LOT in the Auction that I'm all that interested in. I'm more interested in getting rid of games at this point that acquiring new ones. There are a few I have my eye on, that, if I could pick them up pretty cheap, I would... but I have a feeling they will sell for much more than I am willing to bid. We shall see...

After that I am running Hellboy!

Blackstone fortress - Noise Marines - etc

Just a few things rolling off the workbench this week. I was trying really hard to get the last few explorers for Blackstone Fortress finished so they could potentially be used in the game I'm running at ToonCon this evening... but it was really hard as so many of the ebay items I picked up over the last few weeks all arrived in the last 10 days (Mostly Chaos Space Marines - Noise Marines and Terminators... and a few other things) and they proved to be a pretty HUGE distraction...

Also this week, in a not-so-relevant, but sort of relevant tangent. I got rid of the last of my vinyl records... The reason this is sort of relevant is twofold...

First it cleared up a LOT of space! I built these cabinets about a decade ago (though the drawers weren't finished until just a few years ago. Originally the record player was in the spat beside the amplifier and CD player. Records originally took up six of the large spaces - the ones on the left side and all along the bottom.

A few years back I did a PURGE and got rid of HALF my records - just GAVE them all away to Diabetes Canada (which collects unwanted household items and sells them to Value Village). That cleared up the rightmost bottom three, and left the three on the left side still filled with records... oh, and there was a box with about fifty still sitting on the floor to be sorted...

A couple of weeks ago I was sitting in the living room and looking at them all and realized I haven't really listened to any in YEARS and decided it was time for them all to GO! 90% of those remaining I donated to the SSO Book and Music Sale - but I set aside about 50-60 of the ones that didn't suck, to take into the Vinyl Diner (where I actually used to work, many, many years ago!) and sold them to the new owners.

I've had bad experiences selling used stuff to other record stores in the past - took in dozens of CDS only to be offered $5 for the lot of them... So I did so with some trepidation. But it turns out the new owners are a great bunch of guys and they were really excited about some of the stuff I brought in and offered me a pretty decent deal for them... and with that...

(and some birthday money) I picked up a few things at the Dragon's Den.

They will take up much less space!

It's been nice to get rid of them. As you can see in the picture above, the space was instantly filled with games that had, until then, just been in piles around the house... That isn't even close to all the board games we have... I think THAT collection needs some purging as well. I am getting rid of a few in the ToonCon auction - that should be a start!

I've kind of let the purchased/acquired get a bit ahead of the painted tally - 123 painted 28mm figures versus 172 acquired! Part of that wasn't even my fault, though. My friend John brought by about 40 miniatures for my birthday. Half were Coppelstone Ngoni he picked up out of the bargain bin at the Sentry Box when he was in Calgary last year, and the rest were a bunch of spurs of plastic minis that came with Wargames Illustrated - which he has a subscription to... Details can be seen here:

2020 Painted versus Purchased

Anyway... the newly painted minis...

(apologies for the poor quality of the pics, they were taken hastily in some poor morning light so I could get this all done before Finnegan needed to get on the computer to do his school work - and I wanted to get them posted before the weekend...)

UR-025, Imperial Robot, from the Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress box set.

Taddeus the Purifier, Ministorum Priest, also from the Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress box set.

And, finally, the Ratling Twins, Rein and Raus - the last of the Explorers from the Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress box set.

Now to get cracking on the Escalation box stuff... and the Servants of the Abyss!

Other items I've finished up:

Another Scavvy Champion for Necromunda. More back up for Karloth Valois!

Not a totally new one - I'd previously painted this Ratskin, but thought I'd experiment with putting them on some 25mm "Shattered Dominion" bases from GW to see if I could make it look like bits of the deep, dark sump where they all live... and I'm pretty happy with the outcome, so I will likely start rebasing the rest of these... at some point....

Human Psyker - an old Rogue Trader era mini. I haven't named her yet. Originally I'd intended her to be an "under cover version" Keira's Sanctioned Psyker character in our Wrath & Glory/Dark Heresy/Inquisitorial campaign... but she dropped out of that between me ordering this and it arriving...

I will find a use for her as a either a Rogue or Sanctioned Psyker in Necromunda or elsewhere.

Female Ratling - I'd originally imagined her as part of a Rogue Trader's crew... but maybe she'll be a Bounty Hunter...? The figure is from Hasslefree Miniatures. I'd thought of sculpting bare feet on - and am now feeling like maybe I should have... Ah, well... not going to change it now. I like the Cherry Docs.

NOISE MARINES!!! I was going to wait until I had full squads done... but I just couldn't wait. I'll post better pics when I DO finish off complete squads!

I now have all the Noise Marines I need (for NOW!) - three squads of ten. These above make eight painted so far - almost a quarter of the way. They are slow going as each are, more or less, being individually painted. But, I don't NEED them until the end of April, so it shouldn't be any trouble getting them all done.

While painting these I listened to the Fulgrim audiobook (which I'd, conveniently, picked up as part of a Horous Heresy Humble Bundle) - which gave me some background of Fulgrim and his Emperor's Children legion and their descent into decadence - and how the Noise Marines came to be! So that was pretty cool.

There are a half-dozen other minis that I finished up this week... but they're part of two separate complete Gangs/Kill Teams I'm working on - both of which I'd like to post separately, when ALL are completed, with some extensive background I've been brewing up for both of those. So stay tuned for those! One I might try to finish up alongside the Noise Marines. The other... well... it might be a bit longer...

TOONCON!

ToonCon starts this evening - so expect game reports after the weekend. There will probably be four of them - one for each game I'm running there, and then a general one for the rest of the weekend.

Tonight I am running Blackstone Fortress (and Amanda is playing in Ecos and Innovation, I think).

Tomorrow I am playing in Stone Age at noon (I don't think I signed up for a morning thing, so I could sleep in!) and later in the afternoon trying out Architects of the West Kingdom with Amanda (She's not going for the first two sessions as she has to get Keira to dance classes and teach a yoga class). In the evening, after the AUCTION (hopefully I'll come home with fewer that I'm selling!!!), I'm running Hellboy and Amanda is playing Terraforming Mars.

On Sunday I am running my big Necromunda game and then playing in Power Grid. Amanda is playing in Terra Mystica  and then Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calendar.

Should be a fun weekend!

Return to the Blackstone Fortress

I needed more practice playing Blackstone Fortress before running it at ToonCon next weekend, so we had another go at it Sunday evening. The kids were busy being teenagers, so it was just Amanda and myself that went on this expedition....

I played Dahyak Grekh, the Kroot Tracker, again, and also took Espern Locarno, Imperial Navigator.
Amanda decided to try out Pious Vorne, a Missionary Zealot, and also took Amallyn Shadowguide, the Asuryani Ranger that Keira played last game.  I was worried Keira might be devastated if Shadowguide died while Amanda was playing her... but then decided, if she was so concerned for the elf, she should have come and played her herself instead of surfing the internet all night...

Our first exploration card was an AMBUSH!

But we made pretty quick work of the attackers...

And zipped off to the Maglev chamber. Felt like it went a LOT quicker than all the combats in our previous game.

Next up was a challenge. Simple enough and Grekh got another bit of Archaeotech.

Next was another combat - luckily we drew lots of the similar encounter cards - and hostiles are limited by the components in the game - so we really only faced two - instead of four - hostile groups...

They were also taken care of quickly enough!

Another challenge... I thought, for sure, Locarno was going to fall - having a d6 Agility, but he rolled a Critical Success! It was Grekh that ended up falling! He gave up an Archaeotech card rather than roll - as a one in twenty odd of NOT getting a Grievous Wound (or DYING) didn't seem like great odds.

More Challenge. I thought this would be easy first person just needs to back down and *boom* free Archaeotech... but Amallyn Shadowguide had to go first and would have to be the one to back down and Grekh would be the one to get the Archaeotech... and Amanda WASN'T going to do that!? I had to BRIBE her with THREE Archaeotech to just let it go and back down and let me take the card... which was the card that is the Secret Agenda for Rein and Raus - which I fully planned on holding to GIVE to them so we'd have some more inspired characters.

To be fair to Amanda, she WAS just trying to get into character and play the role - I did tell her that these ARE all just allies of convenience who, under other circumstances, might very well just murder each other on sight... I mostly meant the Imperial characters wanting to murder Xenos characters on sight (Grekh wouldn't necessarily murder any of the others - unless he had a contract to take them out, as they could very well be a potential client, and I don't imagine Assuryani just murdering aliens out of hand, unless they, in any way, stood in the way of them carrying out their mission), but kids to Amanda for actually listening to my droning explanations of background fluff and actually taking that  into consideration when making decisions for the characters she was playing!

ANOTHER challenge - Amanda thought there was no way I was going to get it done in time... and I got it done in 13 seconds... Ha!

When we sat down to do this exploration, we did say we wouldn't necessarily do the WHOLE thing - the last one took SIX HOURS and we started around 7pm and did NOT want to be staying up to 1am! but with the first couple combats going a bit quicker and all these Challenges coming out, it made the game feel like it was just FLYING by and we decided around this point to just play it through!

The Next combat didn't look TOO terrible - only two Hostile groups! a

I was a little concerned when I drew the Negavolt Cultist card - but conveniently as it was in the third position - it just added a twist... a potentially dangerous one... but less dangerous, in my mind, than a group of Negavolt Cultists (which we only faced once last game, but I remember them being pretty awful!)

Grekh, more or less, took out the Ur-Ghuls, single-handedly. Vorne roasted all of the Spindle Drones.

All but ONE of the Ur-Ghuls....

Y'know what? Ur-Ghuls are NASTY. This one took a good chunk out of Grekh - like a two-grievous-wounds-sized chunk! Yeouch!

Vorne, finishing off the Spindle Drones.

Locarno decided Grekh, despite his injuries, had things well enough in hand and decided to make for the Maglev chamber... and then reinforcements showed up! Luckily both Vorne and Shadowguide had  extra actions and gone on overwatch... they destroyed each Ur-Ghul as it rushed him!

And then MORE reinforcements showed up! They were a bit slower and allowed Locarno to get to the Mag-Lev Chamber and then Shadowguide and Vorne cleared them away, on the following turn, for Grekh to make his escape.

And then MORE reinforcements showed up!

(reinforcements only show up on a roll of 1-3 on a d20... so this happening three times in a row was kind of silly... Luckily everyone made it out okay...

And then we had One More Combat.

We were playing a bit later than we had planned... but we were SO CLOSE to finishing an expedition, we just went for it!

Remember that thing I said about Ur-Ghuls...? Yeah, Shadowguide wasn't' really paying attention in the previous encounter and failed to learn from Grehk's mistake of leaving any alive and in range of charging...

They took her OUT! Our first out-of-action casualty!

(Spoiler: She didn't die!)

And then MORE Ur-Ghuls came crawling out of the woodwork... Oh, and the Spindle Drones were at Threat Level THREE (it's bad, just trust me on this...)

Locarno tried to help Grekh - blasting Ur-Ghuls with his Third Eye and the setting up his Psychic Force barrier - which saved both of their asses I-don't-know-how-many times.

Eventually, Vorne, who was already waiting at the Mag-Lev Chamber had to come out and save them by BURNING EVERYTHING!!!

And so our "heroes" made their way back to Precipice.

In the Legacy Phase we drew New Threat: Rogue Psykers... boy, that sounds like fun times! Yikes!

Some of the goodies up for grabs at Precipice.

Some of the other goodies.

Amallyn Shadowguide went first and grabbed that Thermoplas Cloak - I didn't even get a chance to read it. but Amanda seemed pretty excited about it. Pious Vorne went back to her own ship and tooled up with a Hospitaller Med Pack. Dahyak Grekh also went to his own ship and picked up the contract for the Rogue Psykers - the one he had fur Ur-Ghuls turned out to be REALLY HANDY! Finally, Espern Locarno spent some time hanging out on Shadowguide's ship trying to talk to the Aeldari and winkle out of them some of the secrets of the Webway, but they were having none of it and sent him on his way with a fancy Plasma Grenade...

Coming Soon to Tim's Miniature Wargaming Blog:

I hope to get another game of this in, even if it's just soloing it - preferably with the characters we HAVEN'T played (assuming I get them painted in the next day or so) and I definitely need another game (or two!) of Hellboy to feel fully prepared... No way I'm getting in a game of necromunda... but I'm feeling that one's pretty solid.

Should also get in a post sometime this week of things coming off the Workbench - including the last few Blackstone Fortress minis - at least from the base set... I still have the Escalation stuff to paint!

After that - a few game reports from ToonCon - where I'll be at all next weekend!
