So... I did a thing...
I just kind of happened to be in the vicinity of Dragon's Den Games yesterday afternoon while running errands, and...
This just kind of ended up in my bicycle bag...
I had a lot of fun playing Blood Bowl last week with Vera and it brought back a LOT of fond memories of playing Blood Bowl Second Edition back in the late 80s/Early 90s.... And the game seems to be taking off here and I already HAVE teams - including a few that still need to be painted - that have been in the PILE OF OPPORTUNITY since the 80s/90s!!?
So I'd looked into just basics I'd need to play the game - the rule book... and a pitch to play on... and the set of tokens... and a set of dice... and all that added up to the same price as the new edition's core box, which was still available at my FLGS (Dragon's Den Games!) which includes the rule book... and a pitch to play on... and the set of tokens... and TWO sets of dice... and TWO COMPLETE TEAMS!?
It is bonkers how much better a deal the core boxes are!?
What have I gotten myself into...
Some of the aforementioned minis I still have from the 80s/90s... There are complete Dwarf and Elf teams there. The skaven are painted, but I really need to touch up the bases. In fact, MOST of the teams could do with a bit of touching up, lots of paint chipped off from many, MANY hours of use back in the day (and probably rough storage and many, many moves had a bit to do with their current state!)
Some of the paint jobs aren't great and there is a temptation to strip and repaint the lot of them... but they have... "character" and nostalgia is holding me back from just stripping them all...
Also the basing was pretty sloppy... that I MIGHT redo! I'm not really sure what size to put them on, though... Currently anything that isn't HUGE goes on a 32mm base. But I worry that putting some of these on a 32mm base will just emphasize how much smaller they are that the current minis, and so I'm kind of leaning towards not rebasing - or rebasing onto new 25mm bases (or maybe 28mm bases...?)
While I have enough teams to host a small tournament, there are a couple of new teams I wouldn't mind picking up - the Halflings and the Nurgle team - just because the miniatures look like they'd be really fun to paint. I am absolutely NOT buying EITHER until I have painted all the stuff I have and have played a few games with them!!

Welcome back to the fold, can't wait to have even more players cut in half and trampled by you 😝
ReplyDeleteHa-ha! Thanks! That was pure re-beginners luck or something... Ask anyone that played me back in the day - that was NOT a typical game for the Gnarly Green Gobbos!!
DeleteStarted reading the actual rules last night and realizing there is a lot that's changed and some of the teams might not be as useful as I thought - or at least the miniatures can't be used as they originally were intended. For example - humans don't have blockers anymore!? the original Orc and Human teams had two (or four?) blockers, two blitzers, two throwers, two catchers and six lineman...? Now the humans can no longer take Blockers... and my Orcland Raiders can ONLY have Blockers... and the rest are Goblin lineman and a Troll!? Ah, well... I'll figure something out! I'm pretty sure I'll still have enough teams that I could host my own tournament!! (I'd have to make some more pitches... and get a few more sets of dice... but otherwise..!?)
Well that is exciting. The new teams look like great miniatures too. (Particularly the brets which I have been eying as the core of a Mordheim team...)
ReplyDeleteI wasn't so keen on them at first, but now I'm kind of looking forward to assembling and painting up the newer teams... unfortunately, I've been looking at all the Old World Tomb Kings stuff and imagining what they could all be converted to be... "assistant coaches"... "apothecaries"... "cheerleaders"... etc... it all has the potential to get STUPID and expensive...
DeleteI converted and painted up a blood bowl team for Mordheim for someone. The idea being they were treasure hunters in the off season...

Ha, those are hilarious, and it is a great idea.
DeleteAnd all GW ideas are stupid expensive these days.
I never got into Blood Bowl (or similar games), but I painted up some of the old metal minis from the original as figures for other uses (some with weapons added, such as a dwarf trollslayer). I also have a couple of non-GW teams that I got through Kickstarter projects, just for the fun of painting (an amphibian/reptile team and a dwarf team - although the latter is still unpainted).
ReplyDeleteAnyway, have fun!
A lot of the miniatures I've painted ended up being "just for fun" as they've never seen action on the tabletop... and I used to be bothered by that. Not-so-much anymore. It's nice if I get to play something, but not always necessary.
DeleteBrigade Games has some fantasy ice hockey models that look fun... not sure I'll ever get them... but I have thought about it from time to time!
Love the painted miniatures! The detail work on those figures is really impressive.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteI have also returned after a 30 odd year absence, I have stripped my orcs and humans, a few ogres, star players and the few halflings that I had from way back then. I also had a female Orc team and some cheerleaders that I picked up along the way. Lots of painting on my desk but my halflings are first up!
ReplyDeleteCheers
Matt
Cool! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
DeleteI'm realizing some of the teams I have aren't going to be as useful as they used to be... Orcs no longer have catchers... nor do Skaven!? I guess I'm going to repaint the bases on all of them anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter. Orc catchers I can just call Lineman and the Skaven ones will become runners... (but it will hurt my brain a little when I look at a miniature I KNOW is supposed to be a catcher... and try to remember its now... something else!?) Ah, well... miniatures that haven't seen action for 30+ years are going to see use again, so... I should be happy about that!!
I love it when you say heres a thing and another project starts! Have fun!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Ha-ha! Thanks! Hopefully it's more "side quest" than "NEW FULL PROJECT!"
