Giant Robot Madness (Part 2)

I based up a couple on 60x60cn MDF bases to see what they look like and am pretty pleased with the results…

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

The two opponents and their pilots – on the left the AT-43 thingie from FFG, on the right Melusine PKA Ausf M by Hobby Base (which I picked up from Hobby Link Japan. The drivers are both from Bolt Action Miniatures.

The MaK with the, presumably, more familiar Sentinel® from Games Workshop® (pictured here entirely without their permission)

The Soviet Arsenal: same as above seen here with a T-26 (from Army Group North Miniatures)

The Sentinel® from Games Workshop® (pictured here entirely without their permission) again, with the commie walker.

More shots of the same stuff for comparison…

I may add some red stars and German grosses to these… Some I may repaint… someday… but for the most part I’ll probably leave them be – I got other things to do!!

Um… I just got a big load of foundry Darkest Africa stuff from an ebay seller – expect some of those shortly (well… as soon as I can pick up some more washers for bases!?)

Giant Robot Madness

So… a few weeks back I stumbled upon a blog (which I now can’t find) that had stumbled upon a pretty sweet deal on some 1/35 Ma.K. models (Mascinen Krieger) and so… um… I bought some (worked out to about $50 CAD for 24 of them)…

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

24 Melusine PKA Ausf M made by Hobby Base (I picked them up from Hobby Link Japan.

This was a bit of a serendipitous find as only a couple weeks previously I had bought a bunch of AT-43 plastic robot models that Fantasy Flight Games was dumping super cheap (again in the neighborhood of $2-3 per model)

Um… I think they’re called Red Blok or something… they’re for AT-43… I’ll use them with Savage Worlds or something…

Anyway I like the looks of them they had a clunky soviet look to them and I thought could potentially be passed off as some sort of Weird War Two super weapon… and I’d been wondering what I’d use against them… well MaKs of course!!

Here’s a shot for scale… from left to right we have; a T-26 from Army Group North Miniatures, the Big Bad AT-43 Red Blok thinige, a panzer crewman from Bolt Action Miniatures, a MaK, a Sentinel® from Games Workshop® (pictured here entirely without their permission), a Russian tank crew from Bolt Action Miniatures (standing in front of..) another (smaller) AT-43 robo-armour thingie, and finally a KV-2 from Army Group North Miniatures…

The primary question is how to base them….?

Left to right; Option #1 (washer), Option #2 (60x60mm Mdf base – same as the Sentinel® from Games Workshop® (based that way entirely without their permission), Option #3 (slightly smaller metal washer), Option #4: (80x80mm MDF base – the new standard for all the 20mm-1/72 stuff I’m using for Blitzkrieg Commander/Cold War Commander/Future War Commander.

Things to consider:

Cost – the big washers are expensive I need 24 just for the Ma.K.s I’d like to re-base the AT-43 stuff to something similar for some continuity

Storage – the bigger the base the more storage bins I’ll need…

I’m kind of leaning towards the 60x60mm MDF base. It’s what the Sentinel® from Games Workshop® (based that way entirely without their permission) and the smaller 28mm WW2 tanks are on… It isn’t TOO ridiculously bigger than the models and I can probably fit 15 of them in one of my storage bins.

The 80x80mm were only really considered because I could then pass them off as even BIGGER beasties in some Blitzkrieg Commander/Cold War Commander/Future War Commander games…

To repaint or not to repaint… At some point I probably will… for now… They’re actually pretty nice looking, so I’ll probably leave them be (I’ve got enough other stuff to paint right now!!). I wasn’t sure how to count them, as with other prepaints, in the purchased vs. painted tally. If I never do paint them it’ll forever be a purchased with nothing to ever count against it in the painted category. I think what I did with some of the WW2 diecast tanks last year was I decided NOT to count them, but if I ever did I would count them as purchased and painted… a bit fiddly but whatever…

Oh, accounting…! Why do I bother!

Weird War or Sci-fi… I had intended to possibly use these for Alternate WW2 sort of gaming, but have also considered just using them for a straight-up sci-fi skirmish campaign. You’re probably thinging “why not use them for both?” – and I probably WILL use them for both… but I’d like to determine a primary use as it would determine what sort of paint job I might give them… if I ever get around to repainting…

Meh… enough blathering, I think I’ve figured it out – now back to painting…

Based robot warriors? Or maybe some SYW French cavalry…? Never can tell around here these days!

Unlucky Fellow

Just one…

While working on those could odd Great War Canucks the other night, I also knocked off a Canadian casualty/morale failure marker. I wasn’t able to post him as I hadn’t finished the base (the bases of the others had been previously “gooped”). I was working on rebasing the Fourth Division again last night (or at least the portion that I have done - the 11th and 12th Infantry brigades – less the 72nd Battalion Seaforht HIghalnders of Canada – as I ran out of washers…) and was able to finish up the base of this unlucky bastard.

The figure is from Old Glory. More of these coming up soon-ish… red probably should be darker...

Great War Canucks

As I might have mentioned in the previous post, I’ve been rebasing all my Vimy figures… and reorganizing them… making the battalions 15 figures…

So I had a few extras on sigle bases already that just needed unit patches painted on, But I did need a few extras so I painted up four last night (only to then realize I only needed two… ah well… I have a head start on the next unit I paint!)

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

These are figures I modeled, moulded and cast myself.

I may actually paint up some more of these – either finish off the third brigade from the fourth Division or, perhaps, start in on the third…

Or maybe I’ll get cracking on some Kings African Rifles for a really big East Africa CLA game…

Naval Brigade (Great War)

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

These are actually figures I modeled, moulded, and cast myself. They’re a little wonky. Like, even wonkier than my more recent ones… but no one notices these things in the heat of battle, so…

I’ve been pondering another crack at Contemptible Little Armies – hence the naval brigade. Though, honestly, they probably won’t be seeing action in the Great War – they’ll more likely be defending English naval bases in some (Very British) civil war action!

I’ve also been dusting off my Vimy figures... and… er… re-basing them!? Once that’s finished I’ll dig out the actual terrain boards and see what sort of sprucing up they’ll need. Only six more years until the 100th anniversary of the battle – for which I had originally planned to do the whole corps attack – So by 2013 I should have another division finished (probably the 3rd Division - being next in line from the 4th, which I have already done), by 2015 another (the second?), and for 2017 the last (the first)… Of course it’s not just the Canadians I have to do but the germans opposing then and the terrain boards – of course I started with the easiest – the fourth division – which had the shortest distance to go (thus the smallest terrain boards, and also only two brigades attacking (the third being held in reserve for the assault on the pimple, planned for the following day….). I've also been adding a couple figures to each battalion to make them 15 (previously they had been 13 figures per battalion).

Hmmmm.... French Cavalry...? British Cyclists...? Who knows!?

A Bright Young Thing, Two Frenchmen and Some Pygmies

Couple of new things… not much else going on…

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

The two Frenchmen are from West Wind Productions and the Bright Young Thing is from Copplestone Castings. Curse that static grass... sticking to everything... ah, it's too chilly out to go take another pic - and I've got other stuff to do...

Pygmies from The Foundry‘s Darkest Africa line. (Another item picked up at the Den on Boxing Day, jumping the queue). ugggh! Again with the randomly clinging static grass.

Coming soon on Tim’s Miniature Wargaming Blog:

Hmmm… more 20s/30s civilians – armed or otherwise…? There’s some SYW French cavalrymen on the workbench too…

I should get a regular wargame night set up or the weeks are just going to slip on by… Anybody up for some CLA tomorrow...?

Yanks

Happy New Year everyone! Here’s a few Yanks I picked up on Boxing Day at the Dragon’s Den (sale’s over now, you snoozed, you losed).

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

The figures are from Artizan Designs. I have no great need of American Riflemen at the moment… I often prep everything as it comes in – stick them on bases at the very least, and often prime them. So they were sitting there on the work bench and I was looking at them and decided these would be quick and fun and easy to paint up… so I did…

Coming soon on Tim’s Miniature Wargaming Blog:

Hard to say.... There's so much polluting the workbench these days… could be some Seven Years War French cavalry… maybe some “Darkest Africa” Pygmy archers… Great War Germans or Russians…

Once again I’m going to say that THIS YEAR I’m going to paint more than I buy… in fact I’m going to paint TWICE as much as I buy – for sure! Really… why are you looking at me like that…? I’m totally going to do it…
