Warhammer Quest: Cursed City - Session Two - Deliverance Journey (Part One!)

This second journey into Ulfenkarn that we chose was a Deliverance Journey - to help the beleaguered citizens of the city escape the Suffocating Gravetide - and endless spell that roves the cities streets and alleys, threatening to bury all in it's path in churned earth, cobblestones, and the bodies of the dead...

The mission, should it be successful, will bring down the fear the Citizens are suffering under significantly, but increases Radukar's infulence...

Amanda, again, played Emelda Braskov and Glaurio ven Alten III, and Finnegan played Jelsen Darrock and Brutogg Corpse-Eater... mostly because I haven't finished painting any of the others!? I'm kind of playing game master, playing the hostiles and generally trying to keep the game moving along..

I'm STILL not super clear on how exactly the Hostile reinforcements are supposed to work on this type of Journey... we kind of just BSed our way through and it seemed to work out...

All ready to go!

With a Deliverance Journy, the map is generated randomly with cards and some have rooms/streets have mysterious objects/and or the presence of hostiles marked on them.

At the beginning of the Journey, there are two streets/squared rooms generated.

Some rooms are marked indicating the presence of civilians that must be warned of the approach of the Suffocating Gravetide!

Emelda Braskov was the first into the building. therein she found three of the Ulfenwatchand cut all three down in short order!

But, as the last of the undead watch dropped, the room was filled with swarms of corpse rats that flooded in from the next room!

Brutogg Corpse-Eater joined and began smashing and stomping all the rats - and likely snacking on a few!

Jelson Darrock arrived and finished off the Corpse Rats - or at least enough of them to induce the others to scurry off somewhere else!

Glaurio Ven Alten III, joined them as a mob of Zombies shambled their way...

Brutogg, Ven Alten, and Darrock made quick work of the ponderously slow walking dead...

Braskov pushed past, warning nearby civilians to seek shelter and get away from the Gravetide that was hot on their heels!

The group was attacked from behind by more Ulfenwatch!

And then a swarm of bats! But Braskov pressed onto, into the next square, where she was assailed by MORE swarms of Corpse Rats!

Ven Alten III, Darrock and Brutogg rushed to catch up with Braskov - and stay ahead of the Gravetide!

Then one of the Vyrkos Blood-Born Vampires attacked Glaurio from behind - very likely one of his own relatives!

Ulfenwatch also attacked Glaruio as he held a position by the door hoping to trap them all in their as the Gravetide approached - roaring into the room with them, tosing flagstones in every direction, churning up dirt and long dead corpses from below, burying or destroying all in it's path!

Glaurio escaped the room just as the roof was about to collapse in on them and joined the others out in the street... who had encountered MORE Deadwalker zombies!

The Zombies were easy enough to take care of...

Emelda Braskov put them all down...

The others rushed past into the next square, smashing apart the Ulfenwatch within and shouting warnings to all nearby!

The injured Ven Alten, escaping with the Gravetide at his heels!

Getting harder to stay ahead of the Gravetide!

Brutogg trying to get to the next passage is attacked by bats!

Darrock joins him, blasting at the bats with his Big Gun and missing them entirely!

Ven Alten and Braskov join them, followed by more zombies that had assaulted them in the previous square.

The situation was getting pretty desperate! The Braskov dashed past Brotugg and tried to cut down the bats and open the next doorway... she failed to do so...

So she stepped out of the way in hopes that someone else might lead them out - her activation being over, and the Gravetide being in the square with them meant she would be caught in there when it killed all within and damaged any heroes kicking them into the next room/square.

I think it was Ven Alten that opened the next door and he and Brutogg escaped, Braskov and Darrock were pushed through by the Gravetide and damaged in the process...

At this point we decided it was getting a bit late as Amanda had to be up early for work... and decided to call it a night and maybe try to finish it up tomorrow. We started a bit late and the game took a lot longer than expected - because we were trying to figure out things as we go...

Things were looking pretty bad... Jelson Darrock was severely wounded and could only use Destiny dice... and the event we rolled to finis up the last turn we played this evening was NO DESTINY DICE. As he was starting in the room that the Gravetide, he would take 2 Damage when it pushed him out of the room.... and he would be out of action.

luckily we have this Game Room with a bit table we CAN leave things out on...

When I went to read over the rules for the scenario, I realized we'd done a BUNCH of things wrong - which made it WAY harder...

Mainly, when doing the Exploration action - to reveal more rooms, TWO rooms are to be revealed each time... and I was only putting out ONE... which severly slowed their progress.

Also, though I didn't quite realize it at the time, I was doing the Monster Reinforcements wrong... Monsters are ONLY revealed in the rooms - though I'm not sure why there are any of the "lynchgates" - where monster reinforcements arrive in other scenarios - so ultimately, they faced WAY MORE monsters that they should have... like, WAAAAAAY MORE... but I didn't quite make this realization until AFTER we were done the next night...

Stay tuned for Part Two!

Work-in-Progress Wednesday - 4 December 2024

I've been feeling a little bored by the Work-In-Progress Wednesdays over the last few weeks... or even months...? It's been feeling less like "Work-In-Progress Wednesdays" and more like "What's-On-the-Workbench-and-NOT-being-Worked-On Wednesdays" Where I just keep posting remarkably similar photos of the same miniatures that HAVEN'T actually had any work done on them in the last week (or MONTH!?).

So here is a shorter series of pics of stuff I've actually been working on! (there is still LOADS of the same stuff crowding the workbench that I've been taking pictures of for the last few months!)

I have been working on some bases for miniatures I'm planning to assemble in the next bit - mostly Chaos/Darkoath Marauders and the Corvus Cabal miniatures I picked up on the weekend.

Speaking of miniatures picked up on the weekend...

I assembled and started on the Provisionally Prepared Ratling Sniper team. I don't often paint things in parts and then assemble... but this one seemed like I should... there have been more and more miniatures lately that I've felt, if I had the patience, it probably would have been smarter to assemble parts and paint them before putting the the whole thing together...

I also assembled and started painting Lady Annika and Kritza the Rat Prince... even though I won't be needing them for MONTHS, likely... and did NOT work on ANY of the Warhammer Quest heroes that I probably could have used this evening!?

I also started on the Slaves to Darkness Endless spells I picked up over the weekend... which is super smart, considering I don't really have any Slaves to Darkness miniatures... other than Khagra's Ravager's and Hargax's Pit Beasts...

This is the Darkfire Daemonrift... I was trying to make purple flames... Not sure it's really working... The base and miniature on these are not yet attached as I realized it would probably work out better for these if I painted them separately and then attached - as both parts would require a fair bit of drybrushing and if they were attached it would mean and endless loop of going back and fixing bits that I'd accidentally got the dry brushing colour of one on the other... ugh... it's workedout pretty well working on the parts separately... not sure if I'm loving the purple flames though...

The Realmscourge Rupture is coming along... starting to feel like these might have done well to paint separately too... ah, well...

The Eightfold Doom-Sigil... I was thinking of doing pink or blue flames on this... but considering how the purple flame on the Darkfire Daemonrift, I may just do regular red/orange/yellow flame...

Maybe that's the problem... regular flames are red and orange and yellow... the purple flames are just purple of different values... the monotone just isn't as interesting? I'm not sure purple/blue/green flames would really work though. Maybe if it was for a Tzeentch-leaning army... but my Slaves to Darkness I always imagined allied to the Hedonites of Slaanesh - my first chaos army...

I've also, finally done some work on one of the other Slaanesh Endless Spells: the Dreadful Visage! It is very nearly done...

There are still the same Warhammer Underworlds Warbands on the workbench... and the last of the Sylvaneth and Nighthaunts... and more tokens and heroes and villains for Warhammer Quest: Cursed City... And a smattering of Slaves to Darkness Heroes and cavalry... hopefully I'll get to them at some point!?

What are YOU working on this week!?

let me know in the comments!

Warhammer Quest: Cursed City - Session One - The First Hunt!

Last week we finally got started on Warhammer Quest: Cursed City.

I bought the game when it was first released in 2021! We still hadn't (and still HAVEN'T!) finished Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress... well... we had finished the quest in the core box and two or three of the other expansions (of MANY!)

While I was keenly interested in the Age of Sigmar this year, I decided I should paint up all of the miniatures for the various Warhammer Quest games set in the Age of Sigmar we had in the family. Finnegan has Silver Tower and Shadows over Hammerhal.

I did manage to get all the stuff done for Shadows Over Hammerhal and we've played through that. While playing through that I've been trying to finish up the miniatures for Cursed City.

They're not ALL done yet... but I had enough done to start playing, so start playing we did!!

In Cursed City, a disparate band of heroes, based on a Kharadron Overlords skyship, land in the city of Ulfenkarn, periodically and carry out missions meant to destabilize the hold the vampires hold over the city and, ultimately to destroy them.

The first mission we went on was a Hunt mission, which is pretty straight forward - run around the cities streets and alleys and kill undead creatures!

Amanda was playing Emelda Braskov and Glaurio ven Alten III - both the last of their line of mortal human nobles that once ruled the city, back when it was called Mournhold.

Finnegan was playing Jelsen Darrock and  Brutogg Corpse-Eater, a ex-Witch-Hunter-turned-Vampire-Hunter and a Mercenary Ogor, respectively.

I kind of played Game Master and controlled the hostile forces and generally kept the game running.

It is MEANT to be played as a coop game and all the Hostiles actions are dictated by a simple table of actions rolled on each round...

Our heroes in the Landing Zone...

Brutogg Corpse-Eater was the first out of the gate, charged around the corner and smashed a pair of skeletons into many small bone shards and battered scraps of armour and weapons!

Glaurio ven Alten III was next and strode forth and blasted a giant blood bat out of the sky with his pistol, and then charged in to cut the rest of the swarm down with his sword!

he could not get them all, though, so Emelda Braskov rushed to his aid!

Round Two - Amanda rolling the destiny dice was very disapointed to have to discard so many sixes (any time a destiny dice is rolled that matches any of the other dice rolled they are discarded and not used that round!)

Jelson Darrock investigated a Mysterious Object...

and discovered a rather cool artifact!

Emelda Braskov searched another and discovered some explosive charge... the two swapped treasures and carried on.

Brutogg heard the scurrying of corpse rats down another alley and charged after them, smashing them with his giant mace and crushing them under foot with his massive boots!

Glaurio ven Alten III came to help him finish up the scurrying horde!

"It's quiet... TOO quiet"

Darrock and Braskov wait and listen for the next hostiles to show up...

With all the initial Hostiles slain in the same round it took another round for more to show up!

MORE Rats... The disgusted Ven Alton...

But Brutogg found them rather tasty little snacks!

Darrock charged after some shuffling sounds heard down a side passage and found some Deadwalker Zombies!

He stumbled and was nearly overwhelmed by them...

But Braskov came rushing in and cut the monsters down

The sound of combat drew the attention of more Skeletons...

Which were cut down by Braskov and Darrock...

Then a blood curdling screech announced the arrival of something a little more terrifying: one of the Vyrkos Blood-Born - a savage and feral sort of Vampire!

"Stand back" said Darrock, "this one is MINE!"

He stepped forward and blasted it with his big gun... the shot missed the insanely fast vampire.

He then charged in and slashed at it with his Ardent Blade..

Again, Braskov stepped in to aid and finished off the vampire!

MORE zombies shambled up and Braskov cut them down as well!

More Skeletons arrived and Ven Alten stepped forward to deal with them!

For his troubles he was wounded terribly by the Watch Sergeant...

Again, Braskov rushed in to clean up...

Finally Watch Captain Halgrim arrived to see where all his Ulfenwatch had disappeared to!

Darrock fought the Skeletal Champion!

Blocks away, Ven Alten and Braskov could hear the combat, but were unable to get there in time to aid them!

Darrock finished off the Watch Captain (but that wasn't the last they'd see of HIM!) and helped Brutogg cut down some more bats!

Brutogg swore they tasted just like chicken!

Ven Alten, having bound his wounds, dealt with a few more Zombies..

Then one of the Kosargi Nightguard arrived - one of Radukar the Wolf's Undead Ogor bodyguards. Brutogg met it and there was some savage Ogor-on-Ogor violence.

More Skeletons of the Ulfenwatch arrived and joined the undead Ogor. Darrock joined Brutogg in battling them!

Guess who else showed up!?

Braslov arrived in the nick of time and cut down skeletons and finished off the Undead Ogor...

With the arrival of the Kosargi Nightguard, there was a concern that Radukar himself might not be far behind, so the heroes made for the pick up location and signalled the airship!

Another Kosargi Nightguard with MORE Skeletons and Zombies showed up... but the Heroes were long gone!

The successful mission dropped the Vampired Influence by two points, but raised the FEAR! Next week (or, rather THIS WEEK, as I've taken rather too long to finish up this game report!) the adventurers will attempt a Deliverence Mission to lower the FEAR!

Great fun was had, I'm very much looking forward to playing through the rest of this campaign. It may take a while... each mission four of the (EIGHT) characters gain experience... it takes gaining experience THREE TIMES before they gain a new level. At least four of them have to get to Level One to go on the first Decapitation Mission - going after a Vargskyr - and no one can gain experience beyond first level until they have successfully carried out the first decapitation mission... I think there are two mission that can be done at second level... then the rest each require another level to be gained before they can be carried out! So a MINIMUM of seventeen mission have to be played out, assuming they ONLY used these four heroes, and every single mission was a success... IF we manage one game a week, we'll be playing until at least March!

(I think Amanda and Finnegan may alternate between heroes to bring them all up to each level as they go... so... maybe June?!

And then there is the expansion quest: NIGHT WARS!!

So excited was I... I ran back out to the Dragon's Den and picked up two of the Vampires I'll need for Night Wars... (possibly half a year away!?)

Perhaps we'll get in some bonus games over the Holidaze!

One Last Trip

to the Dragon's Den...

For the Black Friday Sale!

(not for the year!?)...

Two Vampires needed for Night Wars (and useful for a Soulblight Gravelords army!)

I wish I could that that is IT for the year... but it's not. I'm going to pick up the Slaves to Darkness - Darkoath Spearhead box next weekend... and then THAT might be it for the year... maybe...
