30 Games in 30 Days (Week Three)

For the month of September I have decided to play a different game with the family (or at least the kids) every day of the month. You can read about the previous weeks here:

This was the toughest week yet as the kids (well, mostly The Girl’s…) activities were in full swing this week and that severely limited the time we had to play longer games…

Saturday, 12 September 2015 – we played a quick game of Love Letter before our regular Skirmish Saturday evening shenanigans. This isn’t the WORST hand to start off with in Love Letter… at least I could use the King to give the Princess away and hope whoever I GIVE it to doesn’t get a Guard before I do…

Later in the evening we played Frostgrave – which we’d already played (twice) this month (hence the quick game of Love Letter!). You can read about the past weekend’s Frostgrave adventures here:

Sunday, 13 September 2015 – we got together with our friends Emily and Aaron and their family for an epic 6-player game of Lords of Waterdeep - using the Undermountain expansion from Scoundrels of Skulport (okay there was eight – necessitating some team play).

Monday, 14 September 2015 – We played a quick game of Patronize.

Tuesday, 15 September 2015 – Okay, now we were starting to resort to the quick games – we played a quick game of For Sale in the afternoon before rushing out to get The Boy to his acting class…

Wednesday, 16 September 2015 – Wednesday we were reading about the Dutch Revolt in our study of world history so I had planned to play Revolution: The Dutch Revolt 1568-1648… so we read our chapter and set the game up…

Then I noticed the game length… 4-8 HOURS!?

So we left that set up in the basement and went back upstairs to read another chapter out of our history book hoping that would put us a day ahead so on Friday we could skip reading a chapter and get straight to playing this game…

So for our new game The Girl and I played a couple games of Hive Pocket while we waited for The Boy to finish up his game of D&D 5e at Dragon’s Den Games after her Jazz dance class…

Thursday – 17 September 2015 – Thursday is violin lessons in the afternoon, a quick trip home to make supper then back out to The Girl’s Ballet class… and then we had to nip over to my folks for my Dad’s 70th birthday party – so we ended up playing a quick game of Montgolfiere just before bed!

Friday, 18 September 2015 – After breakfast and a quick practice of our violins we had a stab at Revolution: The Dutch Revolt 1568-1648… I love this sort of game it mostly involves political influence and a bit of economics and, if you have enough mone,y you can wage a war... I thought it really captured the essence of the period. The Girl played the Catholics, The Boy played the Nobility and I was the Reformers. They really got into their roles and started referring to me constantly as "The Heretic" or "The Blasphemer"...

It was a LONG game - we only got to play two of the five turns the game in normally supposed to play for (plus the shorter turn "0" at the beginning of the game - we'd started just after 10 and had to call it quits at 4:15 to go out for supper).

The end of turn scorring had the Catholics ahead of the Reformers (13.5 - 13.0 victory points), The Boy's Nobles were a bit behind at 10 (I think)...?

I'd LOVE to play this with all five players (which would add the Hapsburgs and Burghers to the mix)

More English Civil War

I've been reading about the Wars of Religion with the kids this week… The Dutch Revolt, James VI/I, Mary Queen of Scots. Next week we take a brief sojourn to the East (Japan – we’ll be playing Ikusa and maybe bust out Ronin again) and end the week with the Thirty Years War. The following week we’ll be reading about the English Civil War. So I’m trying to get enough of these finished up to have a decent sized skirmish game. I’ve also got a regiment of Scots Covanenteer infantry on the workbench – to see if I could get that finished up in time for a bigger battle (using DBA Extension for 1500 – 1900AD - if I get enough painted - or perhaps Neil Thomas’ One-Hour Wargames - if I don’t…)

I’m thinking about a horror themed game day for Halloween this year – as it’s on a Saturday. Possibly some horror-themed card games and board games in the afternoon (Fearsome Floors, or Arkham Horror - though that might take all day, or Elder Sign, or Cthulhu!!!: Hastur La Vista, Baby!, or Anathema, or Forever Young, or Innsmouth Escape, or Munchkin Bites, or Munchkin Cthulhu, or Cthulhu Fluxx, or Werewolf - if we had enough players... there seems to be a definite Lovcraftian theme to the Horror related games I own...) and then cap it all off with a big Horror Skirmish game in the evening – probably Fear and Faith… I should get planning that and inviting people…

Probably the weekly update on the 30 Games in 30 Days Challenge, then the Skirmish Saturday Game Report – I doubt I’ll get much more painting done before either of those!

Silverbeard Arrives at Frostgrave

Only Rick showed up to play on Skirmish Saturday Night and the family was mostly interested in playing Frostgrave, so Rick made up a Frostgrave warband (with pretty much the same figures he used for his Song of Blades and Heroes Warband…) and away we went!

SCENARIO

We played the standard “set up three treasures each and fight over them” with the addition of monsters spawning every turn.

FORCES

Rick’s warband was lead by an Enchanter named Silverbeard and his apprentice Lightmane. Among the warband was a Ranger named Jackson, and Archer named Virgil, a Dwarf Infantryman named Curly, and five Halfling thugs; Cutter, Merry, Pippin, Frodo and Sam…

The Boy returned to using his Necromancer (last seen in Game #2)

The Girl also returned to using her Sigilist (also last seen in Game #2)

Amanda carried on with her Thaumaturge. She’s hired a couple of Dark Elves to use as Marksmen – mostly because she found a magic crossbow on her last expedition (after the game she was asking me if I have any Elves with crossbows… “Elves? With Crossbows?! Um, no… but I DO have DARK Elves with crossbows!”)

(I didn’t actually PLAY… I just rolled for wandering monsters and stuff…)

THE GAME

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

Rick and the family all set up and ready to go.

Amanda started things off by teleporting her wizard to the middle of the table then realized she couldn’t pick up treasure AND cast another teleport on the next round…

The Boy’s Necromancer and minions shamble forward into the ruins to snatch some nearby treasures!

Amanda’s Elves

Two of Rick’s Halfling Thugs are attacked by the Giant Rats that were generated as wandering monsters for Turn One. (After I took the photo, but before I resolved the rats turn, I remembered that Rats are Pack Hunters and should both attack one… lucky for Rick it turned out to be the guy NOT holding the treasure).

Amanda’s Elves and the Boys Nercomantic Minions duke it out over some treasures…

Amanda’s and The Girl’s warbands eye each other suspiciously as they each grab a treasure and let the others be.

After chewing on one of the Halfling Thugs, one of the Giant Rats attacks Virgil the Archer.

More Wandering Monsters. The solitary Skeleton was easily dealt with…

The Ice Toad… not-so-much…

The Necromancer’s and Thaumaturge’s warbands still fighting in the square with the two statues. The Necromancer busted out his Demon in a Bottle!

The last of The Girl’s Warband to head for the table’s edge was headed off by a pair of Wild Dogs. She got a lucky roll (or rather the dogs had and incredibly unlucky roll) and won the combat (with out causing the dogs any harm), but it allowed her to leave combat and scurry off the table edge the next turn before the dogs could act again.

After eating one of Amanda’s Archers the Ice Toad hopped after the Thaumaturge herself… She blinded the poor beastie.

More Wandering Monsters provided for a little Skeleton on Zombie undead mix-up action.

The last wandering monster was a Ghoul that showed up on Ricks table edge, long after his warband had scarpered.

Well… This game, I think saw the least action of any game so far – and has me thinking I need to start setting up scenarios that require the players get into the action if they want to get any treasure… Everyone playing this evening was pretty non-aggressive and pretty much ran on and grabbed what was right in front of them and then split as fast as they could… Amanda’s Thaumaturge was the most aggressive of all the warbands!? There was no contact, let alone any fighting, between Rick and The Girl despite the fact they were set up next to each other. Amanda and The Girl quickly made a deal (you take that one, I’ll take this one and we’ll leave each other be…). The Boy wasn’t quite willing to make such a deal and so there was actually fighting between her and The Boy. Silverbeard used telekinesis to slip a few treasures away from the Necromancer’s reach, but that was the extent of conflict between those two…

Yeah, next week all the treasure’s going in a bit pile in the center of the ruin guarded by trolls or something nasty that they will have to fight to get any treasures…

POST GAME

New House Rule – I’ve instituted a new house rule (stolen from Mordhiem, sort of): If a players is fighting a wizard of higher level they will earn bonus Experience Points equal to the difference between their level and that of the higher level wizard x10. So a wizard that is second level fighting in a battle against a wizard that is sixth level would get a bonus 40xp. The idea is you learn a lot quickly when you get schooled by the masters…

In Rick’s inaugural game he only lost the one thug to a giant rat – who turned out to be totally okay. He collected 320 experience points (60 for spells cast, 200 for treasure, and 60 for the new level difference bonus). Among the four treasures he hauled off he collected 230 gold, a candle of Summoning, a Drinking Horn of Healing, a Grimoire containing the spell “Familiar”, and three potions (Toughness and 2x Healing)

The Girl had no losses to check for – in fact the only fighting I think she did all game was against the two Wild Dogs that wandered on at the end… nevertheless, she collected 250 experience points!? (70 for casting spells, 150 for treasure, and 30 for the new level difference bonus). The treasure she hauled off included 100 gold, a ring of Teleportation, two scrolls (Dispel and Reveal Death), and three potions (Strength and 2x Toughness)

The Boy has s bit rougher time of it battling the Thaumaturge’s aggressive ruffians (I think it’s the Dark Elves… bad influence on the rest of the warband). A Knight, and infantryman, and a thug were all taken out of action during the game. The Thug died, the others turned out fine. The Necromancer gained 250 experience (50 for spells cast, 100 for treasure collected, 20 for the new level difference bonus, and 80 for taking out the Thaumaturge’s Apprentice!)

Amanda also had a bit of a rough time – she’d taken on the Necromancer to try and get some more treasure and faced an Ice Toad that wandered into her area. The Wizard was okay (I don’t even remember the Wizard being taken out – but I have in my notes that she was okay – this is what happens when I write up game reports four days after the fact… must have been taken out by the Ice Toad…?). The Apprentice had a “Close Call” – but she had very little equipment to lose. One archer was badly wounded (and will miss a game) and two others were killed DEAD! The Marksman (with the magic crossbow!) and Dog that had been injured fully recovered. For all her pains, she only gained 210 experience points (60 for spell casing, 150 for treasures). The Treasure brought her 90 gold (not enough to hire replacements for her losses!). She also found a Sword that deals +2 dammage, Robes of Arrow Turning and three scrolls (Bind Demon, Decay, and Beauty).

I have a few more English Civil War figures I’ve finished up and should get around to posting pictures in the next day or two… then it’ll be Saturday again… and hopefully I’ll get the game report(s) posted a little quicker!

Frostgrave, English Civil War, and… Sheep?

A few more odds and ends rolling off the workbench… A few more Wandering Monsters for Frostgrave and some more stuff for the English Civil War…

What does the English Civil War have to do with anything I’m doing?! Good Question… I think it’s a mix of the fact that I’ll soon be reading about it with my kids in our study of history… and reading Dalauppror’s game reports from his playtesting of  The Pikeman’s Lament (which is sadly not to be released until 2017!)… oh, and there’s another ruleset from Craig Woodfield (author of Ronin - which I’ve played a lot of) called En Garde! coming out in the new year… and I have a lot of English Civil War figures...

So... reasons...

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version):

Ice Toads! One is a metal Reaper Miniatures figure (I think… I’ve had it lying about for a rather long time) and the other two are plastic D&D Figures (I think… Other Tim picked them up and passed them on) that I repainted and re-based. (the Skeleton is just there for scale…).

Giant White Apes – More D&D Figures. I totally didn’t even repaint them. Just re-based them.

I wanted some quick and easy to paint skeletons and I recalled my friendly local game store (Dragon’s Den Games) has some Reaper Miniatures bones skeletons… alas when I went in they were all sold out… but they did have some of their pre-paints. So I picked up two packs and partially repainted them. Oh, and the one odd skeleton on the plastic base is a spare one The Boy had that he hadn’t painted yet… so I painted it up too.

Giant Rats! I think these are all from Games Workshop.

English Civil War Scots cavalry from Old Glory

English Civil War Scots pikemen from Old Glory

I know, I know, their pikes are super short… I went as long as I could without compromising playability and the ability to fit in the drawer nicely!

English Civil War Scots musketeers from Old Glory

And finally… sheep… (from Pegasus Hobbies). I have some metal sheep individually based (from Gripping Beast). I thought I’d put this flock on a larger multi-figure base to use as a sort-of area of “moveable bad-going”…?

We did play Frostgrave on Saturday… and I did take some pictures… so I will post a brief report of that at some point. Hopefully tomorrow.

30 Games in 30 Days (Week Two)

I mentioned last week that our challenge for the month of September was to play 30 different games for each of the 30 days in September. Here is what we've played for the last week.

5 September - The Family played Frostgrave with Other Tim....

While I ran a game of Song of Blades and Heroes for Rick, Dave and Patrick... Not sure which to count for our game for the day... is it the game THEY played or the game I played...? I'm going to go with the game the majority played and say Saturday's game was Frostgrave.

If you missed it, you can read the reports of those games here:

Skirmish Saturday Part One: Frostgrave

Skirmish Saturday Part Two: Song of Blades and Heroes

6 September - For some reason the kids wanted to play Gift Trap Sunday evening... so we did...

7 September - On the holiday Monday we played an other episode in out on-going fantasy role-playing campaign that is sort of based on Song of Blades and Heroes...

8 September - On Tuesday the kids and I played Ventura

9 September - On Wednesday the kids and I played a quick game of Set before heading out to D&D 5E Encounters at the DRagon's Den Games (only to find out all they were doing was making new characters and The Boy already had his made... so we looked around a bit and wandered back home...)

10 September - On Thursday the family sat down to our first ever game of Puerto Rico.

11 September - The kids and I played Empires: Age of Discovery.

Later, in the evening, Amanda and I went out to play our semi-weekly Savage Worlds/Realms of Cthulhu/Masks of Nyarlathotep campaign... (and my character - that I've been playing since January - died a grisly death at the hand of some crazed egyptian cultists in rural England...?)

We're scheduled to play some more Frostgrave tomorrow, so we'll have to find something else (something quick and short) to play in the afternoon as we've already played Frostgrave this month...

We actually played three completely new (to us) games this week; Ventura, Puerto Rico, and Empires: Age of Discovery. All three were quite good and I'd really like to play them again... alas they are long games so I'll probably wait until October before having a go at them again as we have the Challenge to think of!

Two weeks from now is ToonCon!We'll be playing a LOT of different games there! In the end I think we'll end up playing far more than 30 games in the 30 days.

Skirmish Saturday Night Part Two: Song of Blades and Heroes

On Saturday evenings this fall I am hosting a Skirmish Game Night on Saturday evenings. The Family and I sort of started last week with a game of Frostgrave, but this week OTHER people showed up as well! Other Tim, Dave, Patrick, And Rick came out to play with us!

I wanted to playtest the A Song of Blades and Heroes scenario I’m planning to run at ToonCon in a couple weeks. As the Family had already played the scenario on Sunday and Other Tim was stoked to play some more Frostgrave and/or not so keen to try Song of Blades and Heroes they went off to play Frostgrave in the other room, while I ran the others through building SoBH warbands and ran the ToonCon scenario for them…. (you can see the game report for that game here: Skirmish Saturday Part One: Frostgrave.

It was really good to see Rick and Dave and Patrick (who played this game with me) as I don’t think I’ve seen (or at least played games with) any of them since… last fall…?

SCENARIO

The scenario, as with last week,  is designed for four players on my mountain pass terrain board – though we only played with three this time (I’d thought of bringing out my Halfling Warband again… but couldn’t locate the warband roster so ultimately decided just to run the game – and the dragon if it showed up).

The players groups have heard a dragon that lives in the pass has laid an egg – a rare thing – and many would pay a high price for such a thing. Their respective groups have been waiting and watching for a moment when mama dragon is away and now is the time!

Each group starts on a different side of the table and must set up within 1 Long of the center of that side, up to 1 Medium from their table edge. Dice to see who chooses and sets up first.

A solitary egg is set in the exact center of the table. It takes an action to pick up the egg (though dropping it is a free action). It cannot be picked up in any enemy are in contact with the egg or when in close combat contact. The figure carrying the egg is slowed due to it’s bulk and weight – Long moves become Medium, Medium moves become short, etc. Mounted characters would have to dismount to pick it up and then remount (each an action) – but I won’t be giving anyone mounted figures when I run the scenario at the Con and no one took any mounted characters when we played it.

Anyone knocked down or failing morale automatically drops the egg.

There will be a deck of four cards (well… three, this time…) each with a factions name on it. At the beginning of each turn the four (three!) cards will be shuffled and then they will be drawn randomly to determine the order of the factions during the turn. On the second turn a fifth card will be added in for the Mama Dragon! If on any turn the Mama Dragon’s card is the first drawn the Mama Dragon returns and all hell breaks loose!

The Mama dragon will enter from one of the mountain tops and will immediately swoop down and try to recover the egg - attacking anyone carrying the egg.

Dave borrowed my loaner “Goblin Spam” warband, Rick brought some of his son’s (who also used to game with us) old LOTR figures and Patrick brought some of his own figures – it’s too bed the picture below turned out so crappy, because he’s really come a long way with the painting! So awesome!

THE GAME

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

Rick, Patrick and Dave setting up.

Rick went first with General Jackson’s Jedis – within a turn they were within a single move of grabbing the egg!

By the second turn he’d grabbed the egg and was headin back towards his table edge. The ponderous goblin mob and slow moving dwarves were starting to look like they might not have a chance. Then Dave got lucky giving the Goblin archers a group move at the end of his turn and they got three actions – he swiftly skirted around General Jackson’s Jedis and spread out to block the way…

Patrick also got lucky with some activations and hurried his leader ahead to try and block the way…

Oh, and then the DRAGON showed up on the third turn!!!

I thought the arrival of the Dragon would end things rather quickly- and there were a few times where it looked like it would be all over, but then Patrick would slmost literally pull it out of the fire and turn the tables… it took me a few turns to figure out how to actually USE the dragon… flying is awesome (with the free disengage against non- flying creatures). It allowed me to just leap up out of any situation that looked bad an stand back and just try to fry people with the dragon’s breath weapon (C 5, Shooter: Long!)

Also in the same turn Burik One-Eye, one of Patricks Elite Dwarf Warrior knocked down General Jackson,  and then Nuri Frostbeard took him out with a Gruesome kill – the subsequent two morale checks saw the majority of General Jackson’s Jedis flee from the table!

I’d even snatched up the egg and was ready to fly off with it at one point!

But Patrick’s bloody FEARLESS Dwarves would rush in a knock down the dragon! GAH!!

At one point Jorlund – Dave’s Dark Elf Leader charged into combat with Virgil – one of Ricks remaining warriors – who was surrounded by Goblins. An incredibly unlucky bit of dice-rolling saw Jorlund taken out of action! Luckily Dave had taken a Standard Bearer – the first time anyone’s taken on in one of our Song of Blades and Heroes games – and was able to use it’s Rally Around the Flag ability to keep his remaining goblins from fleeing off the table when their leader fell!

(I may actually have to look into getting one for the Halfling Hollow Defence Committee!)

When the Goblins finally got it together again, they surrounded Virgil and ganked him (leaving Rick with just “The Boot”) .

And the egg is back at the center of the table where it started… if they’d just left it there we might have let bygones be bygones and called it even… but nooooooo… those greedy dwarves actuall thought they could get it off the table.

The Amazing thing is they very nearly did! They got it to within a move or two of their table edge before I’d finished off the last of them… It was a bit of a slog as they were severely hampered by their Short Move and being further slowed by the heavy egg.

Then the remaining GOBLINS made a grab for it and started sprinting down towards THEIR table edge!?

And then THEY nearly made off with the egg!!!

In the end it was a very good game. I think they scenario will work fine for the convention! I’m not sure what to use for warbands (as I will be providing them all). I am reluctant to use any SPAM warbands (lots of low quality troops) – they are tricky to use – especially for new players. I am also not so sure about using any troops with Short Move… as others could easily rush to the center of the table in a turn and be off with the egg before they even get anywhere. Although that didn’t really happen this time. Short move being slowed by the heavy egg, though, made it really hard for the Dwarves to get anywhere once they got it… still… even so they very nearly made it to their edge with it…!?

POST GAME

Two of Ricks main guys were Greusome Killed and gone so he didn’t even bother with the post game sequence – he’ll be starting with a totally new warband the next time we play SoBH (though it may be identical to the one he used last night…).

Two of Patricks Dwaves died of their wounds (Valda Peakmaiden and Maggdella – both the female dwarves in his warband!?) and Nuri Frostbeard received a serious injury that will bother him until the end of his days (permanent -1 C!). Burik One-Eye will be -1 Q for his next game, due to his minor injury. Eveyone else managed to heal up quick enough… He didn’t make much income and was only able to hire a replacement Elite Warrior – Ertha Peakmaiden (Valda’s sister, perhaps…?)

FIVE of Dave’s goblins died. Another three will miss the next battle and two more will be -1 Quality for the next battle. Jorlund was also seriously injured and was permanently reduced in combat ability! Luckily Goblins are cheap and two new light infantry and an archer were hired to replace some of the lost Goblins…

Next Week…?

Coming soon on Tim’s Miniature Wargaming Blog:

Hopefully I’ll get a bit more painting in this long weekend and be able to post some progress before next weekends skirmish games! Amanda’s been talking about having a one –on-one game of Frostgrave BEFORE the next weekend – so perhaps there’ll be a game report for that if we find some time…
