Lost Patrol - Space Wolves

On Sunday, Orion came over to play a few games and brought a few of her Space Wolf Scouts to try out Lost Patrol!

GAME ONE

Lacking a Sergeant with close combat weapons, Orion brought along a Scout Sniper to stand-in as the sergeant....

The first game, the Wolf Scouts tried to start off together - safety in numbers, stay with the pack!

Orion had some good luck in the form of long straight sections of path, which used up the tile deck quickly!

Sergeant cornered!

"You want some of this!? Come and get me fuckers!"

Last two making a run for it!!

One taken out by a genestealer assault...

Down to three tiles in the deck... Will he make it out!?

SCREEEEEEEE!!!!

nope.

GAME TWO

Ready to go again!

Spreading out a bit more this time

CONTACT!!

Sarge and Heavy Gunner fell back to the clearing and blasted away a few of the Genestealers!

Two other Wolf Scouts tear off in different directions looking for the Escape Pod!

Just LOOK at those straight jungle pathways!

Sarge and the Heavy Gunner assaulted - both survive, but are split up!

Genestealers come for the scouts on the trails...

They go down fighting!

EAT LEAD, BUG!!

The Sarge is taken down leaving only the Heavy Gunner!

.. Who strikes off down a trail to try and lose the Genestealers.

There are only two tiles left in the stack... unfortunately, I know which two they are...

The first is the dead end...

Orion is a clever player...

moving into that dead end makes tiles disappear, and the Genestealers with them. The last tile in the deck is the Escape Pod... they just have to make it to the end there...

But Genestealers just keep piling in every turn!

One tile left...

But there just aren't enough bolter rounds to shoot their way out and they are eventually overwhlemed and taken out!

SO CLOSE!!! That is the closest we've gotten to a Marine victory so far!!!

GAME THREE

Orion had one more go at it...

Again with the long, straight jungle paths... Orion left the Heavy Gunner at the clearing to support both groups striking out...

But that left them vulnerable!

Gunner gets over run, but others find a long path... but so much tangleweed!

Sergeant and trooper are cut off...

... and then cut to ribbons...

The final scout make a run for it... but turns to fire on pursuing Genestealers... before being overrun!

GAME FOUR

For our final game, I dug out my marines and had a go... on the first round I sent marines out in all directions, leaving only the Heavy Gunner in the clearking to support all the other marines.

Lucky for me there weren't any close ends that Genestealers could take out the Gunner from so he was able to support any assaults on the first round...

Genestealers came for Bluey and was obliget to fall back. Teh Heavy Gunner blew away two of the Genestealers and the Sarge, having discovered a trail that turned back on itself, rushed back to the clearing to help!

Genestealers attacked on the periphery, taking out Trooper Pink!

Then they finally got Bluey...

Sarge, they Gunner, and Trooper Greene ran down a path together trying to lose them...

The Genestealers got Greene, and the Sarge and Heavy Gunner fled back towards the clearing!

They tried their luck getting through the tangleweed.

The Genestealers caught up to them and attacked.

The took down the Heavy Gunner...

The Sarge escaped down the path..

But only briefly, entwined in more tangleweed, the Genestearler finally caught up to him...

That's TEN games of Lost Patrol I've played now... Still no Marine victories, but we got REALLY CLOSE this time!!!

Still keen to play it more, but there is the new Warhammer Underworlds being released this weekend, so...

Afterwards we also tried out Crypt Hunter, but I'll save that for a separate game report!

  1. I love the idea of this game, they are short and brutal but really look good fun. The Marines came really close but not to be, hard job for them to beat those pesky Genestealers!

  2. Sounds like a tough call for the marines, makes me want to paint some genestealers to go with my Space Wolves!

    1. I'm not sure...

The mechanics of combat are insanely simple, which is definitely a plus when playing with younger people. Also, it can play VERY QUICKLY - also a plus when playing with kids. But the strategy for which way to go with the marines to have a hope of success, or placement and movement of the genestealers can be a bit tricky.

While (most) adults understand the narrative of "last stand" type scenarios where you are pretty much expected NOT to win and success is measured in how long you survived... Kids, I've found, are less likely to 'get' that and become quickly dispirited and frustrated by constantly losing... Maybe if they only play the genestealers...? Even so, they kind of need to get how to place the genestealers so as to overwhelm and pick off marines.

I guess if you can find the rules online and print off some hexes, you can always give is a try! if you do, let me know how it turns out! Always happy to be wrong about this!
