STILL MORE Romans

What did I say I had to do earlier this week? 20 figures a week...? Well here's another fourteen - to add to the six grapevines and harvesters.... Boom! Twenty figures done this week (I counted the grape vines as 28mm foot figures... the Foundry essentially counts them as such in their packs, so...). On to some more Romans for next week - there'll probably be a few more Gladiators and a few Legionaries as I'm pretty much done the civilians.

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version):

Anohter batch of generic ancient/Roman types. There are figures in this batch from Wargames Foundry, Black Tree Design, Warlord Games, and Crusader Miniatures.

Coming soon on Tim’s Miniature Wargaming Blog:

More Romans. Hopefully a game report at some point… Power Legion? Song of Shadows and Dust (which arrived this week)?

Ancient Grape Harvesters and Game Plan Update

Well… here was are half way through the year…

To date I have painted 454 28mm foot figures – along with a few mounted, a gun and some terrain bits and a bunch of larger terrain tiles! Unfortunately I have acquired 962 28mm foot figures! The bulk of that (over half) was my birthday present from Amanda which was mostly 28mm plastic Hät Napoleonics – enough to build the infantry requirements for French, Prussian, and Bavarian armies for Neil Thomas’ Napoleonic Wargaming and have a sizeable bit left over for skirmishing with Song of Drums and Shakos.

I do plan to paint more than I aquire from now on so I have 508 28mm foot figures to paint in the next 6 months. That’s about 2.75 figures per day or about 18-20 per week for the next 27 weeks. A very doable amount  - for me! It does help, however, when I have a clear plan.

So I’ve been thinking and planning the last week or so and trying to figure out what I could get done in the next 6 months.

I had been planning on finishing up the 3rd Canadian Division for the Vimy project. I think I’ll finish up the 7th Infantry Brigade (which I already have figures for) and some Corps Troops – but I may hold off on doing the 9th Infantry brigade until next year (as I would have to BUY some figures to complete those and then I have MORE to paint to paint more than I’ve acquired!?)

And what else am I planning to paint for the rest of the year? Well as I am studying the ancient world with the kids this year I thought I’d try and focus my gaming there as well. I have about 60 more Romans to finish up (Gladiators, Civilians and a few Legionnaires and Auxiliary troops) which I think I’ll start with over the next three weeks…

Then I think I’d like to work on my Nubians and Ancient Egyptians Betrween the two DBA armies and some individually based figures for skirmishing I have about 140 figures plus 4 chariots – which would take me another 7 weeks (putting us at the first week of September – right around when we start reading about Greeks – if all goes according to plan).

At some point I’d like to sneak in a few battalions of Great War Canadians and maybe finish off the final battalion of Early War French – though I don’t have any Early War Germans to oppose them.

Over the fall and winter I’d like to work toward finishing up all the historical and mythical Greeks I have. I have about 50 individually based figures for skirmishing/role-playing and about 450 figures to finish up for 6 DBA/HOTT Ancient/Mythical Greek armies (Spartan, Theban, Amazon, and three generic Greek Hoplite armies). I won’t get them all finished by the end of the year, but I should get the Amazons and two of the others finished by the end of the year. The remaining three I hope to finish up in January/February so I can have a semi-historical Ancient/Mythical Greek DBA or HOTT campaign for the 11th annual Wargaming Birthday Bash/Winter Wargaming Weekend! (anyone interested in getting in on that action!?)

If it were a perfect world I could hope the momentum would carry on through the next year and I could finish up the FIVE Alexandrian Successor armies I have figures for and then the three or four Early Imperial Roman armies I have figures for… and the Ancient Germans… but that might be asking a bit much of my attention span…. I DO need to get working on the Vimy stuff if I hope to pull off the Corps attack on the 100th anniversary in April of 2017!

At some time this year I would like to finish up a couple of terrain tiles I still have materials for. I sould also like to build the terrain for the 3rd Canadian Division’s area of operations at Vimy (and finish repairing the 4th Division’s terrain) and maybe build a Roman villa or two and some ancient city buildings that could be passed off as Greek or Roman. Perhaps I could get away with just making some new tile roofs for my Generic Middle East Mud Brick Village…?

I had been thinking I'd run some games at ToonCon this year but that now seems unlikely. With my shifting interests and a lot of other projects on the go this summer and fall (building book shelves, etc). I just don't think I'm going to have the time to commit to organizing a good convention game.

As I get going on DBA/HOTT armies again in the fall I might try and organize another campaign - as it always seems extremely difficult to get any number of local guys to come out on a regular weekly basis it might be a hybrid internet campaign like i ran in the past. The Campaign players would actually not be locals and send in their troop movements and diplomatic negotiations via email - and the battles would be played out locally by whoever shows up wanting to play some HOTT/DBA that week.

We shall see...

In the meantime, here is what I finished up last night…

More Romans.

Maybe some game reports of Power Legion play-tests and possibly a game of Of Gods and Mortals - I’m pretty sure I have enough Greeks I could pull off a small game of this…

POWER LEGION – Playtest #2

Almost two months ago I volunteered to help out with the play-testing of Power Legion – a new Super Hero game from Ganesha Games using the ever popular Song of Blades and Heroes game engine…

You can see the first play test we did here: POWER LEGION – Playtest #1

I have to admit I’m feeling just a little bad about not getting more play-tests in before this but May/June are just crazy around here… So last weekend I was DETERMINED to get another game in… and I did (despite that fact that we had Karate grading in the morning and then we had to ride to the other end of town to get to the the Dragon’s Den for Free RPG Day… and then get groceries… and get to the library to return some books… did I mention it was pouring rain all day…?) So I only had an hour or so to come up with some new heroes to try out… and then our friend arrived early… and we got started late… and then I had another insanely busy week… but that’s all over now… we played a game and her, finally, is the report!

(Whew!)

THE GAME

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

The two teams set up at the opposite ends of the street while the Police and the Bank Robbers face off at the intersection.

TURN ONE

Dim Shadow kicked things off by teleporting to the polics station and ambushing the SWAT Officer easily taking him down!

The Sinister Dr. Flame ran up the street to join the Bank Robbers exiting the main branch of the River City Credit Union. (Yeah, it might seem those bank robbers were a bit dim to rob a bank right across the street from the River City Police Department HQ…. but remember this was all just a set-up to draw in the River City Super Squadron!)
.

On the Heroes end of the turn Super Engery Man flew to the top of the Wales Theatre…. Aaaaaaaand then Superfasatgirl rolled a turn over…

TURN TWO

The sinister Dr. Flame and the Bank Robbers all blasted away at Super Energy Man on top of the Wales Theatre… but did absoloutely nothing to him (thanks to d8 armour!)

Punch Brewster ran up the street while Dim Shadow took down another cop.

When it was the Heroes turn the remaining River City Police Officer on the scene stepped up and attacked Dim Shadow and was KOed for all his efforts…

Superfastgirl rocketed up the street and tried to slam into Punchy Brewster and got knocked down in the process, got up and did a power attack with her remaining actions but failed to do anything (I think Punchy actually hit Superfastgirl, but failed to do any damage to her…)

Super Energy Man unleashed a blast of raw Energy Power at The Sinister Dr. Flame staggering him! Then Super Energy Man flew away to the top of the River City Credit Union.

TURN THREE

Dim Shadow teleported to the top of the River City Credit Union and attacked Super Energy Man… hitting him…. but not really doing anything (d8 armour, yo! Should have made Dim Shadow’s knives armour piercing…)… and then she teleported away before she got her but kicked off that roof!

The Sinister Dr. Flame did not fall unconscious (being “staggered” he had to test every turn for KO). He and the Bank Robbers decided to hightail it out of there before they did end up KOed and were forced to be an objective in a supervillain breakout scenario next game (although, that might have been fun too!?)

Hell Girl ran up the street some more…

On the Heroes turn Super Energy Man flew down to join in the fight between Punchy Brewster and Superfastgirl… but nothing happened (probably punchy hit Super Energy Man, but couldn’t do anything to his awesome d8 armour/d8 Knockout). Superfastgirl also took a swing at Punchy and again with Punchy’s awesome d12 martial arts it was Superfast girl that got hit and was KOed for her efforts!

TURN FOUR

Dim Shadow teleported into  the melee between Puchy Brewster and Super Energy Man (and the unconscious Superfastgirl) hitting Super Energy Man (again) and doing nothing to him (again). Punchy then rolled a Turn Over.

Oh, and The Sinister Dr. Flame succumbed to his injuries and was KOed. I guess we WILL be having a super villain break out next game!

On the Heores turn Super Energy Man flew away from Punchy and Dim Shadow to pick up Hell Girl (who was still running down the street) hoping to try a team maneuver next turn

TURN FIVE

The Bank Robbers ran back towards the action – I guess finally seeing that Superfastgirl was down…? Dim Shadow teleported way out of the action – not wanting to be the target of what she knew was coming next…

Super Energy Man Picked up Hell Girl and delivered a “Dive Bomb” attack on Punchy Brewster… I’m pretty sure Hell Girl missed - with Punchy’s awesome Martial Arts she probably did some crazy Aikido side step and HG piled into the ground. Hell Girl apparently survived the fall.

TURN SIX

I guess it was getting late and I stopped taking pictures… one both ends of the turn Punchy and Hell Girl hammered on each other – both times Punchy hit Hell Girl, but was unable to actually damage her. So they stood there. Hammering on each other.

Super Energy Man flew down the street to seek out Dim Shadow and delivered a mighty Energy Blast with KOed the Dim Shadow.

At that point we called it.

Again – a great game… took a little longer than I imagine it should – but mostly because I spent a lot of time looking things up to try and remind myself of how a few things worked.  Once I get it in my head it will be a lot quicker.

Coming soon on Tim’s Miniature Wargaming Blog:

Hopefully now that all the crazy has subsided and all the kids activities are done for the summer we’ll get some more Power Legion play tests in SOON – though we’ve also been thinking it’s time we gave Of Gods and Mortals a try… and A Fistful of Kung Fu – Hong Kong Movie Wargame Rules… So many games, so little time...

Friends, Romans, Countrymen…

Another batch of Romans (and slaves)

(well… mostly slaves…)

I’ve recently started The Story of the World Volume One: the Ancient World with the kids and have gotten thinking about Ancient wargaming… Though we’re nowhere NEAR the Roman times in the book, I thought I’d get these (and the others I’ve been working on and a few more still to come) because I thought it’d be fun to play Cthulhu Invictus… maybe using Tale of Blades and Heroes?

I also ordered a print copy of Song of Shadows and Dust and I’m hoping these might be useful in that game…

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version):

The work produced from a couple of late nights…

Two upperclass Roman citizens (both from Wargames Foundry)

Slaves – most are from Wargames Foundry, except the African female in the center of the front row, she’s from Warlord Games.

Armed Slaves or lower class Romans – probably up to no good. (All from Wargames Foundry)

Dead Roman soldiers the kneeling one is from Warlord Games the rest are from Black Tree Design

Trade goods (objective markers?) from Wargames Foundry)

I STILL haven’t gotten that Power Legion game report done… hopefully I’ll get to that tonight or tomorrow.

Ancient Germans and Picts

A few more ancients for skirmishing… These lots finish up the individually based Ancient Germans and Picts I currently have. I should get working on their respective DBA armies – the Picts, at least, are half done! I probably will.

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about what to do over the next year or so. This year I’d like to get working on a bunch of my ancients – some individually based for skirmishing, some on multi-figure bases for DBA/HOTT. I have Egyptians, Nubians, Ancient Germans, Picts, early Imperial Romans (at least 3 DBA armies worth!) and Ancient Greeks (at least four or five Hoplite DBA armies, 5 Alexandrian Successor DBA armies, and an army of Amazons), Thracians, Skythians, Indians… wow… now that I think of it I have an awful lot. It’s almost embarrassing (if it weren’t for the fact that most of my readers also have multiple unpainted armies in their own storage closets…).

Perhaps I won’t get them all done - especially since I’d also like to finish up painting the Great War stuff that I happen to have (3 battalions of Canadians, one of French, plus assorted artillerymen and guns) and built the terrain for the Third Canadian Division’s area of operations at Vimy. I probably won’t be picking up any more figures (to complete a third brigade for the Third Division) as I’d really rather not buy any more figures this year. As it is I’ll have to paint 20 figures a week for the rest of the year just to match the number painted with the number acquired!

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version):

A few more Ancient Germans from Black Tree Design

Picts – a mix of Black Tree Design and Wargames Foundry.

I took some pictures of the other Picts I have done so far, thinking I'd add them to one of the galleries I have (over to the left there...). I'm not sure if i should put them in the 28mm Ancient Rome, Enemies, etc Gallery or the 28mm Dark Ages Gallery . The Picts are a bit late for my Romans - which are mostly Early Imperial types... and a bit early for my Dark Ages  - which are mostly 1066 -Viking-Normans-Anglo-Saxon/Danish... I'll probably put them in the Roman one... and if they ever face off I'll pretend the Romans are Middle Imperial...

Coming soon on Tim’s Miniature Wargaming Blog:

I DID get around to doing another play-test of Power Legion on the weekend, but haven’t had a chance to post a report. I’ll probably get to that next.

After that…? Likely some more ancient stuff. I have a bunch more Roman civilian types on the workbench.

Ancient Romans and Germans

I’ve been working on a few Ancient Romans and Germans lately…

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version):

Some upper class Roman Citizens from Wargames Foundry.

Some lower class Romans citizens or slaves – also from Wargames Foundry.

A wounded Roman auxiliary from Warlord Games.

Some ancient Germans from Black Tree Design.

Can anyone guess what I’m planning to do with all these…?

Coming soon on Tim’s Miniature Wargaming Blog:

I have a few more ancients I’m working on – more Romans, more Germans and some Picts… and perhaps some Nubians and Egyptians…? And a few more modern Geezers and Supers

Geezers and Supers

A few things rolling off the workbench this week… I’d kind of lost interest in painting for a week or so there and then got busy with...well... other things. (I did do some Other Painting...) But Amanda’s been away in Ottawa for work this last week so I’ve been staying up and getting some painting done while watching (well… “listening” to a few movies – occasionally looking up to see what’s going on) and listening so some more of A Clash of Kings audiobook (almost done!)

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version):

“Putcher trousers on, you’re nicked” – The Flying Squad Guv’nor from Killer B Games.

A couple of Thuggish geezers also from Killer B Games

Two new supers (I’m calling them Fire and Ice) from West Wind Productions old range for Super System (I think Old Glorymight still be manufacturing these…?)

Two more Supers from the same line… I haven’t come up with names for them just yet…

Coming soon on Tim’s Miniature Wargaming Blog:

I have a batch of ancients that I’ve also finished up that I’ll be posting separately as a separate post.
