October Games

We played some games in October... here is what we got up to!

Wednesday, 8 October 2025

Finnegan needed to spend some time in the animation lab to get some work done on a project, so we gave Warhammer Quest a miss this week... which felt extra bad as we'd missed the previous week because Amanda and I had been in Vancouver...

So on Wednesday Amanda said she's play a game of Spearhead with me...

We were both kind of tired, but I'd been wanting to play on my fancy new mat ever since I'd picked it up on the weekend... and wasn't sure when we'd get another chance to play any games that week...

I played Stormcast Eternals we said were dispatched to Ghyran to have words with some Sylvaneth who were killing logging parties that were cutting down trees they weren't supposed to... it came to blows... an understanding was eventually reached...

You can read all about the game here:

Sunday, 12 October 2025

Orion was in town this weekend, so we got in another episode of our What We Do in the Realm of Shadows - Soulbound: Champions of Death campaign. In this episode the Player Characters made it to the final Realmgate they needed to pass through to make it back to shyish... unfortunately they had to wade through a horde of Plaguebearers that were surrounding the realmgate. With those dealt with, they passed through, only to find themselves in the middle of a massive battle between large armies of Maggotkin of Nurgle and the Anvild of the Heldenhammer Stormcast Eternals!

You can read all about it here:

Monday, 13 October 2025

Monday Amanda and I played a game of Spearhead. She played her usual Sylvanth Bitterbark Copse. I tried playing the Blades of Khorne - Bloodbound Gore Pilgrims against them. It was a draw...

You can read about the battle here:

Spearhead - Blood in the Trees

Tuesday, 14 October 2025

On Tuesday we played the first Decapitation Journey in the Night Wars campaign of Warhammer Quest: Cursed City!

You can read all about that one here:

Warhammer Quest: Cursed City - Night Wars 03 - Thirst Awakened

The following week skipped Warhammer Quest and didn't play any other games, so...

Sunday, 26 October 2025

On Sunday, Amanda and I played another game of Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Spearhead! I was trying out my new Maggotkin of Nurgle Bleak Host Spearhead... she was trying out some new fancy Sylvaneth dice...

you can read all about it here:

Spearhead - Nurgle versus Sylvaneth in Ghyran

Tuesday, 28 October 2025

Tuesday we skipped playing Cursed City because Finnegan had an animation assignment to work on, again, so Amanda and I played another game of Age of Sigmar: Spearhead.

you can read the rull game report and see all the pictures here:

Spearhead - The Contagion Returns

Wednesday, 29 October 2025

Orion was back in town this week and had been madly painting away at the Hungarians I'd picked up for her at Imperial Hobbies, so we played a game of Bolt Action on the Eastern Front!

At some point I'll finish up a game report and post it..

What games did YOU get to play in October!?

Let me know in the comments!!

Spearhead - The Contagion Returns

Once again Finnegan bailed on us to do... Schoolwork... (NERD!)

So instead of Warhammer Quest, Amanda and I played Warhammer Age of Sigmar; Spearhead on Tuesday evening!

Amanda played the Sylvaneth Bitterbark Copse again and I returned with the Maggotkin of Nurgle Bleak Host...

In this battle, the Maggotkin took the initiative. The Putrid blightkings surged to the left, trying to make a flanking maneuver around the Sylvaneth's right.

The Plagubearers followed off after the Pusgoyle Blightlord who swung right to make their way around the Sylvaneth left. The Spoilpox Scrivener got a little preoccupied with their tallying wasn't able to keep up and fell behind - leaving them dangerously exposed...

The Sylvaneth took advantage of this and sent the Kurnothi after the daemonic leader of the Nurgle forces...

The Treelord stomped the Plaguebearers into gory, disgusting pulp that tainted the ground for years to follow...

The Pusgoyle Blightlord and the Putrid Blightkings both swung toward the center and caught the Branchwych leading the Sylvaneth and a unit of Tree-Revenants in a pincer attack...

the Branchwych fell and the Tree-revenants were nearly all cut to peices...

The remaining Tree-Revenants slipped through the spirit pathways, devastated by the loss of their leader, were determined to exact some vengeance against the servants of the Plaguefather!

The Sylvaneth swarmed the Spoilpox Scrivener... but despite it's gangly, awkward appearance, it turned out to be a fairly devious opponent that was much harder to kill than one might imagine!

The Treelord returned to the center of hte batlefield to deal some serious blows to the Putrid Blightkings before slipping through the spirit-pathways to escape before the Pusgoyle Blightlord could join the melee.

the battle off in the corner dragged on...

Meanwhile the Putrid Blightkings and the Pusgoyle Blight lord chased down the Treelord...

If that weren't bad enough... MORE plaguebearers arrived on the battlefield...

As did another Pussgoyle Blightlord... who seemed like he might come to the Spoilpox Scrivener's aid... but did not...

Loyalties among the servants of the fell powers of chaos are fickle and they tend to hold nasty grudges for the smallest of slights... while sometimes these are resolved with violence... sometimes they let their enemies take care of their petty rivalries by letting a die rather than coming to their aid...

After some bitter and brutal combat... the servants of Nurgle felled the mighty Treelord...

Finally, without the aid of the Pusgoyle Blightlord, the Spoilpox Scrivener was killed.

The Kurnoth Hunters returned to the center of the battlefield and were joined by some Tree-Revenant reinforcements!

The Tree-Revenants attacked the Plaguebearers.

But the plaguebearers were nasty fighter and deal devastating blows to the Tree-Revenants.

There was little else the Sylvaneth could do at this point and a general retreat was called...

So... the Sylvaneth lost to the Maggotkin of Nurgle again... I ended with 24 Victory Points and Amanda had 15... Oof!

The Maggotkin are pretty brutal. Mind you I had some really lucky rolls and just critical moments - particularly in my ward saves, which kept the Spoilpox Scrivener alive far longer than he really should have been - which tied up the Kurnoth and Tree-Revenants for turns, which kept them from going out and scoring points elsewhere!

In other Age of Sigmar related hobby news... work continues on the Great Unclean One and... theoretically I still have elements of the Helsmiths of Hashut... AND the Soulblight Gravelords... AND some more Nighthaunts (and assorted other Age of Sigmar models!) - all on the workbench. I should really focus on the Great Unclean One to make sure it's done (but I do have a whole month before Tanksgiving...).

I feel like maybe I should really get another Spearhead done though, because Amanda isn't going to find continually losing to the Nurgle force fun for long... I DID see that the Dreadscythe Harridans were back in stock on the Warhammer website... so hopefully that means the backordered box I asked the Dragon's Den to get in for me will arrive soon, and those will take very little time to paint up!

I should REALLY finish up the Soulblight Gravelords as well - they are over half done!

Spearhead - Nurgle versus Sylvaneth in Ghyran

Having finished the Maggotkin of Nurgle Bleak Host Spearhead in the wee hours of the morning, I was pretty excited to try them out against the Sylvaneth that Amanda has been playing.

Nurgle versus Sylvaneth in Ghyran is a pretty classic match-up. During the Age of Chaos, the forces of Nurgle almost entirely overran the Realm of Life - which was all battling between the Sylvaneth and the Maggotkin. Most of the fighting in Ghyran since the dawn of Sigmar's Tempest at the outset of the Realmgate Wars has been to cleanse and purge the forces of Nurgle from Ghyran by the forces of Order - primarily the Sylvaneth and Stormcast Eternals... but also the Cities of Sigmar and others, to a lesser extent!

The Sylvaneth took the initiative marching on the servants of nurgle that were busy spreading the plaguefather's "blessings".

Tree-Revenants charged a Pusgoyle Blightlord. An action they soon regretted, as three of them were quickly slain.

The Kurnoth Hunters charged some Plaguebearers on the flank.

the Plaguebearers were slow and easy enough to cut down and avoid their blows... but the Spoilpox Scrivner just behind them, splattered the Kurnoth with the most disgusting mucus when it unleashed a massive sneeze, spraying everything in its path... the Plaguebearers didn't seem to mind at all...

Putrid Blightkings shambled into combat..

They slaughtered the rest of the Tree-Revenants, allowing the Pusgoyle Blightlord to turn on the Kurnoth who cut two of them down!

The remaining Kurnoth stepped through the Spirit Pathways and the Sylvaneth redressed their lines, calling up some of their reserve Tree-Revenants.

Then the Treelord and the last remaining Kurnoth Hunter slipped behind enemy lines to exact some sort of flanking pincer move, perhaps?

But left their Branchwych leader dangerously exposed!

The presence of the Kurnoth Hunter behind them drew the Plaguebearers and Pusgoyle Blightlords attention.

The Putrid Blightkings shambled towards the enemy general... but failed to press their advantage, giving her a chance to flee deeper into the woods.

The treelord, hearing the Branchwychs desperate call through the spirit song returned to her... as MORE Plaguebearers arrived

and ANOTHER Pusgoyle Blightlord buzzed into the battle.

The other Plaguebearers and Pusgoyle Blightlord had dealt with the Kurnoth Hunter and secured the Maggotkin rear and right flanks.

A savage battle ensued on the left flank, during which the Branchwych was slain...

MORE Tree-Revenants arrived and once more harried the Maggotkin's rear, drawing the Pusgoyle Blightlord back once again!

It was a day of terrible loss for the Sylvaneth...

In the end the Maggotkin of Nurgle won the day (24 victory points to 15!). It's a pretty hard hitting force which is difficult to kill!

I had bought a set of fancy Sylvaneth dice for Amanda... but she was unsure of their ability to roll well and rolled the lot of them a half dozen times to see.. on the whole, they rolled pretty average (or slightly above average, by my count...) there WERE a lot of crits being rolled, but Amanda pointed out that crits did not matter to her, as her force had no crit abilities!? I guess she IS actually paying attention and learning the game if she knows what crit abilities are, despite her force not having any!?

The plaguebearers have Crit (mortal) - but there are only five in each unit and they (usually) only have ONE ATTACK each... so it rarely deals any damage. The entire Maggotkin force has a Battle Trait where every crit rolled in an attack gains them a Disease Ppoint (to a maximum of seven) then a second Battle Trait allows them to expend Disease Points to deal Mortal Wounds at the end of every turn!

The Putrid Blightkings, in addition to each having four fairly effective attacks, have a unit ability (Relentless Attackers) where at the end of the turn, if still in combat, a die is rolled for each remaining member of the unit and if the roll is higher than their opponents health, a mortal wound is dealt... which means they really want to be bullies and pick on the WEAKEST units the enemy has!

Looking forward to playing with these more! (and painting up the Great Unclean One and Shudderblight Cyst to try some bigger battles with these!)
