Ruined

I started this ruined building… oh… four years ago maybe… possibly five…? I was playing Mordheim at the time. Anyway, it’s been sitting in on my self in a half complete state for some time. Every so often I’d get it down and scratch a bit more brickwork into the carpenters filler that I had coated the base plywood with (yeah, back when I was still using scrap plywood…). It was a labourious effort but looks pretty damn good. Now I just have to make a dozen more or so to have a city block….

I think I’ll have to figure out a quicker easier method for the next one(s).

Matakishi’s Tea House has some GREAT articles on Making Things, I think I’m going to try and make some City Buildings (except I’d probably use MDF instead of the cork tile. Mostly just because I’ve never used cork tile, I’m familiar with MDF, and I imagine it might be a bit more durable… I can’t say I’ve ever even seen cork tile around here, but then again, I haven’t really been looking.

Here’s the building from a couple different angles with assorted 28mm figures for scale. I think a bunch of City buildings would be really handy they could be used for all sorts of games; for Mordhiem to pulp adventure to zombies or post-apocalypse…

Partisans

I stayed up waaaaaaay too late last night working to finish these off. I was suffering under the delusion that these were the LAST of my partisans and I was really excited about the prospect of finishing something off… Unfortunately as I wen through my drawers to gather all for a big group photo I realized that these are only the last of the Partisans WITH RIFLES! I stil have another eight, mostly armed with sten guns (and one MG42, and a masked fellow with a rifle and bolt cutters…).

Ah, well. One step closer to completing one batch of figures.

There’s quite a variety of manufacturers represented here in such a small group. There’s one from West Wind Productions, and a couple from The Foundry, Black Tree Design, and Bolt Action Miniatures.

A Couple More Mongrels

I finished up a few more Mongrel Miniatures last night. Now I just have some East Germans to finish up to keep the Moderns off the “to paint” list. Of course there should be a few more toys arriving in the mail in the next week or two, but after that, that’s it for a while.

After I get caught up with the modern (military) 28s I’ll be back to wondering about what to do next again. I’ve knocked a few off the list from last month; WW2 Russian infantry (though I’ve got a few more now, though…), the PAVN and ANZACS, and a few of the modern civvies… Of course now I’ve got another couple Descent figures I really ought to just crank out for John…. And I REALLY need to get working on some new terrain!

I’ve also got the micro sci-fi stuff I’ve been digging out in anticipation of the arrival of Future War Commander. What I should really do is finish up the 20mm Canadians and Russians for Cold War Commander - that would probably be a quicker project to complete.

Anyway… here’s the stuff I finished up last night.

A Mujahideen Stinger team (guess I better get those Russian helicopters put together…).

A British Milan team (guess I'll have to get some Russian Tanks....).

Just Another Painting Update

Another couple productive evenings of painting:

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

Another British Command Group from The Assault Group. I was tempted to do these in Desert DPM… but then I would have been tempted to buy MORE INFANTRY to paint in Desert DPM for them to command!? I guess I could have used them with the SAS (which are in Desert DPM…) but they would have looked a tad out of place with their Kevlar helmets and SA-80…

More Cold War Brits from Mongrel Miniatures.

The first sample of my East Germans, also from Mongrel Miniatures.

A few more Kiss-Kiss, Bang-Bang figures from Artizan Designs and Copplestone Castings

A couple more old GW items being repainted in anticipation of the arrival of Future War Commander!

Dead North Vietnamese.

“Old school” Space Marine Rhino APC and Eldar Falcon tank. Just trying out some paint schemes in anticipation of repainting all my old toys (and a few newly acquired ones) fo use with Future War Commander!

Firebase Airborne

This is the third scenario in Skirmish Campaigns Screaming Eagles at Hamburger Hill. I had planned on holding off on playing it for a week or two to give me a chance to crank out some more appropriate looking terrain (a couple of sandbag bunkers and mortar pits), but then decided to just play it with whatever I had that I could BS my way through with – as I probably wouldn’t get to making the terrain this week anyway. Unfortunately this was a last minute decision so I really hadn’t read through the scenario and thought much about how to translate some of the special situations in the scenario into Savage Worlds… So I ended up leaving a lot of stuff out and BSing my way through, changing rules as I went…

THE GAME

(Remember: click on the pictures for a bigger version)

Christian showed up and played the Americans. He had been reading the battle reports and decided he should play the Americans because “it was about time they won…”

Sentries at Firebase Airborne sit peacefully in their bunkers and foxholes blissfully unaware that their enemy approaches.

The PAVN Sapper Penatration team cuts a gap in the wire. The follow on forces waiting in the wings to surge into the base.

Unfortunately the grenadier in Fireteam A of First Squad – just happen to be looking out of the bunker he was posted in and saw something move out in the wire.

Being the crack shot that he is he landed a 40mm grenade from his M79 right in the bunch of them and knocked out six of my sappers before they even got into the compound!

Sappers surge into the firebase!

PAVN run amok between the bunkers… While they didn’t get any demolition charges into the bunkers they did toss in a few grenades, which took a toll! Strangely one guy in the 1st squad bunker slept clear on through until turn four (all US forces started the game “shaken” as they weren’t expecting the attack at all) despite all the shooting and the squad leader standing next to him yelling (Command edge) – he was the only one untouched by the grenade going off in the bunker. After it went off he finally woke up!

Carnage everywhere. The game ended at turn six as there were no PAVN left fighting.

The Outcome

US Forces:
0x KIA
3x Seriously Wounded (cases that would require immediate evacuation to a full field hospital in the rear, or perhaps even to Japan – they would be out of action for some time, if not right out of the war)
5x Lightly Wounded (cases that would probably be evacuated as far as a field dressing station and likely be out of action for a day or two)
1x Walk Away (this guy wasn’t even evacuated – I think it was a grenade casualty so the concussion from the grenade probably knocked him right out, but miraculously didn’t even leave him with a scratch!?)

Vietnamese Forces:
7x KIA/DOW
17x Seriously wounded
10x Lightly Wounded (including one that was MIA and assumed taken POW)
1x Walk Away

As for Victory Points

US
+5 for controlling all structures at the end of the game and +35 for enemy taken out of action…. So 40!?

PAVN
+9 for enemy taken out of action

I think that would constitute a “staggering victory” for the Americans!

This ends the first “Campaign Arc” “The Approach” in teams of victories the PAVN have two and the US one. If you total the victory points over the three scenarios we’re looking at: US=56, PAVN=37…

I probably should have made the Sapper Team leaders wild cards and obviously given a little more thought on how to destroy bunkers and how the demolitions worked… ah well… I was still hurriedly writing out unit cards when Christian arrived and he was a bit late…

Good Fun. Next week’s scenario: A Hard Day for Charlie Company.
