Not going to lie... after the previous weeks debacle, I almost gave up on Night Wars. It just seemed so CrAzY hard to get those little imps when the map board is constantly swarmed with large hostile groups!? How could they EVER hope to succeed at that mission...!?
We decided to have another go at it this week...
This week, Finnegan brought Brutogg Corpse-Eater instead of Octren Glymscry, and also Dagnai Holdenstock... Amanda had Qulathis the Exile and Glaurio ven Alten III.
In case you forgot... because... it's been a month... in the Sabotage Journeys, the heroes are hunting down the little annoying diregoyles and gnaw bone strays that make up Carmilla DuSang network of spies. They are small and fast and super hard to kill.
I mean, they're as easy to hit and only have one health... but DODGE everything on a 5+ on a d12 - 66.6% of the time you hit them... they just dodge it... Oh, AND you can't attack them if ANY OTHER HOSTILES are visible...
Also, you have no idea where they are. They are hidden under marker (the eyeballs) on third of them are the little spies, one third are mysterious object markers (which can be explored for treasure... or traps...) and a third are enemy hostile groups... and you have no idea which until you encounter and expose them... AND THEN, if it's a little spy, it goes tearing off in the direction of one of the lynchgates (spawn points) trying to escape. d12÷2 squares. and then it goes the same distant towards the NEAREST lynchgate. if it runs off... you have to wait until a new marker is spawned.
Hostile group and little spy markers are respawned at the end of the turn in which they escaped or the hostile group card was replaced...
It's tough.
Oh, did I mention that it's STILL permanently NIGHT - so all the hostile groups are on their Empowered side (faster, more damage) AND all the characters start Diseased (one of their activation dice is always reduced to 1) AND Cursed (hostiles do +1/+2 damage... so a zombie that normally does 2 damage on a regular hit and 3 on a crit... is now doing 3 on a regular hit and 5 on a crit...)
(AND if they are taken out of action during the game they are -1 on survival roll for each condition Cursed + Diseased = -2... so going from 8% chance of dying to a 25% chance of dying...)
Yeah...
So...
These are fucking TOUGH (and potentially DEADLY scenarios...).
For this journey our heroes travelled to the Tallyman's Lodge - a know gathering place for DuSang's spies and minions!
Qulathis was the first to enter the Tallyman's Lodge, and found a mysterious object and spotted one of the Gnawbone Strays and chased it down.
The Heroes presence drew the attention of some Fell Bats! Brutogg took to beating on them and bellowed at the others to go find their quarry!
Qualthis found another and tried putting arrows through it... but those little fuckers were FAST!
Dagnai and Glaurio joined her and killed one of the Strays, with shots of pistol, chops of axe, and a few stomps of boot, the revolting little horror was eventually destroyed - before it could escape again.
Qulathis chased down the one she was after and finally killed it before it could escape as well!
Dagnai ranged ahead and found another... and killed it!
... and then he was swarmed by bats!
The minions and spies seemed to be having a staff meeting in this one corner of the building...
At some point some ulfenwatch were lured out by the heroes making some noise killing one of the diregoyles.
Qulathis murdered most of them with her bow... because this isn't Advanced Dungeons and Dragons!
Dagnai chasing down another Diregoyle, while Glaurio and Brutogg deal with a pack of Zombies that shambled up to them.
Qulathis killing another Gnawbone Stray.
(Do you kill zombified cats...? Is it RE-killing them...? Destroyed probably the best descriptor...)
And then a Vargskyr showed up... and Brutogg beat the thing down!
More Ulfenwatch arrive on the scene... Dagnai yelled "ALL ANIMATED SKELETONS ARE BASTARDS!" as he charged into the group and started chopping and hacking with his ancestral axe!
Brutogg took his turn and squashing a Diregoyle into paste with his "marrow-masher"
The kerfuffle within the Tallyman's Lodge finally started drawing the attention of some more vampires - some Vyrkos Blood-Born arrived shortly after the Vargskyr let out it's last cry.
The group stacked by the final room to try and winkle a few more of the little spies out of there...
Aaaaand apparently it was Carmilla DuSang (and an undead Ogor of the Kosargi Nightguard) that had been holding the staff meeting... but the meeting had been with her little spies - who scattered as Glaurio kicked in the door!
At the sight of DuSang and her bodyguard, Glaurio screamed for help like a little girl... it was a little embarrassing... but they would leave no witnesses...
Qulathis killed one of the escaping spies and Brutogg came running!
Then Glaurio pulled himself together and started filling DuSang full of silver bullets from his brace of pistols... and Qulathis joined him, putting a few arrows in her for good measure!
Dagnai chased down the other escaping spy!
And then Brutogg arrived to deal with the undead Ogor...
The room was then FLOODED with bats and rats called forth by DuSang as she stumbled away full of bullets and arrows!
Dagnai found ANOTHER Spy to chase down and finish off... and that completed their Journey, everyone quickly scarpered off to the extraction point and they were whisked away to safety!
There was much rejoicing... that is Amanda attempting to "high-five" Finnegan...
She is not trying to slap him.
I swear.
The excitement and celebration might have been a bit premature... We then rolled for the extraction event. As the Adamant tried to make is escape, if sailed through a rogue Endless Spell and everyone had to check all of their enhancements... rolling the D12 on a one, the enhancement was destroyed... and between the four character that went on the journey, each with two enhancements... they managed to roll one FOUR TIMES!? This little event destroyed enhancements that can cost 33 Realmstone... it took many sessions over MONTHS of play to gather that kind of loot to gain all those enhancements!?
The celebrating ended and the cussing began.
You may not believe this, but Amanda can get VERY cussy when enraged... despite having known her for nearly two decades, both children were shocked and appalled by the torrent of profanity that escaped her lips in the wake of this incident...
Still... one more victory on the Nightwars board... While still very TOUGH, these scenarios were win-able! I think we were all a little relived that this one had been a success - despite the loss of all of their best magic items!
WHEW!!
Still very behind on all these Cursed City game reports... we have played THREE more games. My hope is to get all three done before our next game on Tuesday!
In other Warhammer Quest related news... Warhammer Quest: Darkwater is being released this weekend and I will be at Dragon's Den games bright and early to pick mine up on Saturday... or.. at least before mid-afternoon!
